During the past 12 months, five clinical whole-organ splenic homotransplantations have been carried out with the objective of providing active immunologic tissue for the recipient patients. In one case with hypogammaglobulinemia, it was hoped that the transplanted tissue would alleviate a state of immunologic deficiency. In the other four, all of whom had terminal malignancies, the purpose was to superimpose a state of altered immunologic reactivity upon the host in the hope of thereby suppressing the inexorable growth of the neoplasms. Although vascular neoplasms of the spleen are rare, they are the most common nonhemopoietic proliferation of the organ, and include hemangiomas, lymphangiomas, hamartomas, littoral cell angiomas, hemangioendotheliomas, and angiosarcomas, as well as the recently described myoid angioendothelioma (MA). A 65-year-old man with systemic mastocytosis and associated hematological neoplasm (plasma cell myeloma, SM-AHN) received an 18 F-FDG PET/CT for staging. In addition to the typical bone marrow and splenic uptake, PET/CT also showed diffuse 18 F-FDG uptake in the gastric wall. It suggested the involvement of myeloma or mastocytosis. Subsequent histopathologic analysis of gastric biopsy specimens through endoscopy confirmed the diagnosis of mastocytosis involvement.

HIV protease inhibitors are antiretroviral drugs able to prevent production of infectious particles. It has been shown that these protease inhibitors are able to inhibit cancer-promoted angiogenesis in patients affected by Kaposi's sarcoma. A preliminary phase I study on dogs with stage III splenic hemangiosarcoma was designed in order to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of the protease inhibitor Indinavir to delay the progression of this advanced neoplasm. The results suggest that Indinavir is potentially beneficial in dogs affected by microscopic residual disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fecal occult blood tests (FOBT) and flexible sigmoidoscopy have previously been recommended for colon cancer screening. More recently, studies have recommended colonoscopy due to the high rates of advanced neoplasm not detected by FOBT and sigmoidoscopy. Previous studies of the effectiveness of colonoscopic screening in Taiwan were limited to families of patients with colorectal cancer. The cell of origin of parafollicular (monocytoid) B cell lymphoma (PBCL), splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL), and hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is controversial. Splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) is an uncommon low-grade B-cell lymphoma. It is an indolent lymphoma with a median survival rate of greater than 10 years. BACKGROUND/AIMS: This article aims to describe the different techniques of laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy and to compare the results of our series of 9 laparoscopic resections against the historical open control in the same institution. With the advent of laparoscopic surgery, there is an increasing number of patients with different pancreatic pathologies that can now be managed by minimal access surgery. The initial results of laparoscopic pancreatectomy are quite promising particularly for those small neuroendocrine and cystic neoplasms located at the body and tail of pancreas.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a frequently occurring soft tissue tumour with aggressive biological behaviour. Primary MFH of the spleen, however, is an exceedingly rare occurrence. Herein, we report a case of such a neoplasm in a 66-year-old female. The tumour was well localised within the spleen and the patient remains alive and well 34 months after splenectomy without any adjuvant therapy. A brief discussion and review of the few cases of primary splenic MFH previously reported in the English language literature is included.

Radiological and clinical experience with transcatheter intravascular occlusion of abdominal and pelvic tumors in 55 patients is presented. Major indications include control of hemorrhage, palliation of local tumor symptoms, and preoperative management of facilitate surgery. BACKGROUND: Vascular tumors of spleen represent a wide spectrum of lesions, ranging from benign to highly aggressive neoplasms. Among the benign tumors, localized hemangiomas are the most frequently encountered. Splenic hemangiomatosis is seldom seen especially in the pediatric population with anecdotal cases described in the literature.

Hematopoietic neoplasms developing in AKXD recombinant inbred, NFS.V(+) and ICSBP knockout mice were assessed using morphologic, cytologic and molecular criteria that relate these disorders to human lymphoma and leukemia. Lymphoma types included precursor T-cell and B-cell lymphoblastic, small lymphocytic, splenic marginal zone, follicular, and diffuse large cell (DLCL). In addition to previously defined subtypes of DLCL composed of centroblasts or immunoblasts, two additional subtypes are defined here: lymphoblastic lymphoma like (LL) and lymphoma characterized by a histiocytic reaction (HS).
