BACKGROUND: Splenosis is the heterotopic autotransplantation and implantation of splenic tissue after splenic trauma or splenectomy. Considering that splenosis often occurs in the mesentery, omentum, and peritoneum, intrahepatic splenosis has seldom been reported. We report a rare case of isolated intrahepatic splenosis in a 54-year-old man who presented with a liver mass thought to be hepatocellular carcinoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old man was referred to our hospital for further evaluation of a liver lesion. The patient was asymptomatic and had a history of emergent splenectomy after

Splenosis is a pathology resulting from a rupture of the spleen due to a trauma or a surgery. We report the case of a patient presenting with a splenosis, initially diagnosed as endometriosis-related pelvic nodules, the most frequent cause of pelvic nodules in women. We will describe the imaging strategy that led to the final diagnosis of splenosis.

Ectopic splenic tissue (accessory spleen or splenosis) occurs as dark-red-to-brown or purple nodules outside the spleen. Accessory spleens are congenital lesions histologically identical to a normal spleen. Splenosis results from implantation of splenic tissue following splenic rupture and lacks features of normal spleen. However, these distinctions have been largely applied to human cases, and the terms are often used interchangeably in domestic animals. Here we describe ectopic splenic tissue in 46 canine surgical biopsy specimens examined at the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, 2000

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate in a canine model the induction of tolerance to renal transplantation after splenectomy and splenosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, experimental, comparative, longitudinal study included 4 experimental groups, each comprising 4 dogs. Group 1 (control group) underwent renal transplantation only; group 2 underwent renal transplantation and splenectomy; group 3 underwent renal transplantation and splenosis; and group 4 underwent renal transplantation, splenectomy, and splenosis. Survival and degree of rejection were compared between the 4 groups.
RESULTS: Sple

Compared with left suprarenal splenosis, a right suprarenal accessory spleen is more likely to be misdiagnosed as an adrenal tumor because of its extreme rarity. Especially when splenosis mimics an atypical pheochromocytoma, preoperative diagnosis may become more difficult and elusive. Herein we report the case of a female patient with a right suprarenal mass, which was suspected to be an atypical pheochromocytoma based on a history of the classic triad and positive somatostatin receptor scintigraphy, but histopathology suggested a final diagnosis of right suprarenal splenosis.

Autologous splenic replantation after splenectomy for trauma is generally recommended in order to prevent postsplenectomy sepsis. Several aspects, however, make this method uncertain: The extent of splenosis induced is not to be predicted. Even if the whole spleen is replanted, the resulting mass may not exceed splenosis, which sometimes develops spontaneously after sole splenectomy. But patients with extended splenic regenerates do not differ from those without any splenosis, considering various immunologic parameters. Postoperative complications after splenic replantation (abscess, intestina

We present the case of a patient with an elevated prostate-specific antigen level who underwent a prostate MRI that revealed a mass between the prostate and rectum, prompting further evaluation. Biopsy suggested low-grade B-cell lymphoma. A staging 18F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated a mildly avid pelvic mass and abdominal splenosis. Heat-damaged red blood cell scintigraphy showed uptake consistent with splenosis in the pelvis. A review of outside pathology confirmed no evidence of lymphoma, establishing splenosis as the diagnosis.

Hepatic splenosis is a nodular implant of normal spleen tissue in the liver. This innocent liver nodule is frequently misinterpreted as a malignancy. Almost all hepatic splenoses have been associated with a clinical history of splenic trauma or prior surgery. This report describes two cases of hepatic splenosis. In both patients, the nodular lesions were initially thought to be liver malignancies and they were ultimately assessed by histology. The clinico-pathological findings of all published cases of liver splenosis underwent critical review. Although they are rare, hepatic spleen nodules sh

INTRODUCTION: Numerous conditions may cause liver lesions, solitary or multiple, benign or malignant. It can be crucial to establish the correct diagnosis. Splenosis is a rare condition that may result from the spillage of cells from the splenic pulp following abdominal trauma, accidental lesions to the spleen during operation or elective splenectomy. These splenic 'implants', which are often multiple, can be located anywhere in the peritoneal cavity, although they are most often found in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. They may be confused with neoplasms or endometriosis, and may rare

Splenosis consists of the autotransplantation of splenic tissue following splenic trauma. Unlike hypersplenism, to which it is not related, it does not usually result in any clinical manifestation. It is usually discovered incidentally during operation years after splenic trauma. A benign tumor is found which may or may not be histologically identical with normal splenic tissue, and may or may not be functional. We present a 52-year-old man with a pelvic mass thought to be malignant. Work-up, including CT scan, 99m Tc colloid scintigraphy and 99m Tc-labeled heat-denaturated erythrocyte scintig

Accessory spleen and splenosis are two types of ectopic spleen. An accessory spleen can be found in various sites in the abdomen, but an intrahepatic accessory spleen is very rare though many case reports of intrahepatic splenosis are available. This case report presents the incidental diagnosis of accessory spleen in the liver of a 57-year-old male while undergoing laparoscopic diaphragmatic repair. The patient had a history of splenectomy 27 years ago for hereditary spherocytosis, but his routine haemogram did not show any features of the ectopic splenic function. Intraoperatively, a mass wa

Thoracic splenosis is a well-documented yet clinically elusive sequela of combined splenic rupture and diaphragmatic trauma, classically presenting years after initial injury as unexplained pleural effusions or dark hypervascular pleural nodules. This case illustrates a critical diagnostic pitfall: small superficial forceps biopsies of suspected ectopic splenomas routinely harvest only the reactive fibrous capsule, yielding non-specific inflammatory histology that can obscure unconfirmed thoracic splenosis while requiring careful differentiation from tuberculous pleuritis and pleural malignanc

RATIONALE: Ectopic splenic autotransplantation refers to the heterotopic autotransplantation of splenic tissue and no treatment is necessary for it when patient is asymptomatic. Its incidence rate is reported up to 67% among patients with a history of splenic trauma and splenic surgery. The diagnosis of it before operation is really difficult, and it is easy to mimic as other tumors.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We reported a 42-year-old man with hepatic splenosis, with history of splenectomy for traumatic splenic rupture 16 years ago and hepatitis B&C. The patient was enrolled with recurrent low back p

BACKGROUND: Splenosis is a benign condition that most commonly occurs following traumatic splenic rupture or splenectomy. It is characterized by ectopic autotransplantation of splenic tissue, typically within the abdominal or pelvic cavities. Due to its nonspecific clinical and imaging features, splenosis is often mistaken for malignant or metastatic disease, making accurate diagnosis a persistent clinical challenge.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The diagnosis was established using multimodal imaging techniques, including transvaginal and abdominal ultrasonography with color Doppler flow imaging (CD

Thoracic splenosis is the presence of acquired ectopic splenic tissue within the thoracic cavity, typically following thoracoabdominal trauma or surgery. It is mostly asymptomatic and detected incidentally on radiography or tomography. A 64-year-old man was admitted with exertional dyspnea without any other respiratory complaints. The patient had a history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension and had undergone bilateral lung surgery and splenectomy due to a traffic accident 30 years ago. Thoracic computed tomograph (CT) revealed an 11x7mm nodular lesion in the posterobasal lower lobe of the l

INTRODUCTION: Blood cells are mainly destroyed in the spleen during autoimmune cytopenia. Amongst the various therapeutic strategies, splenectomy is sometimes necessary during the disease course. However, splenosis or accessory spleens can account for autoimmune cytopenia relapse after initial splenectomy in these patients.
CASE REPORT: We report an 18-year-old male with common variable immunodeficiency who presented with immunological thrombocytopenia. Splenectomy allowed remission of cytopenia, but a relapse was attributed to splenosis, because Jolly bodies were absent on blood smear. Lapar

A 33-year-old man suffered sudden abdominal distension without traumatic episodes. He had undergone total splenectomy for hereditary spherocytosis 13 years ago. He was in shock, and his hemoglobin level was 10.5 g/dl. Contrast enhanced computed tomography revealed a giant mass in the left upper abdomen and extravasation of the contrast material into the mass. Excision of the mass was performed, and microscopic examination showed a giant hematoma surrounded by normal splenic tissue. We speculated that an accessory spleen or splenosis had enlarged for the 13 years and ruptured. The patient remai

This case series explores the diagnostic and management complexities of non-malignant ovarian masses, illustrated through three distinct cases: struma ovarii, mature teratoma, and ovarian mass with peritoneal splenosis. The first case details a struma ovarii initially misinterpreted as a potential malignancy due to its complex imaging features, leading to diagnostic uncertainty. The second case involves a mature teratoma, which, despite typical imaging characteristics, presented significant symptoms that necessitated careful clinical management. The third case highlights an ovarian mass with p
