We describe a 16-year-old boy whose left forearm and hand were cut by a piece of glass from a broken window as a result of the fall. He had surgical repair of his left extensor pollicis brevis, abductor pollicis brevis, and dorsal branch of the left radial nerve. Following the surgery, he was put on a splint so as to immobilize the left forearm and wrist. On removal of the splint 4 weeks post surgery, he was noticed to have more hair growth on his left forearm and hand than his right counterparts. The patient was reassessed 2, 4, and 8 months after the removal of the splint. The hypertrichosis

INTRODUCTION: Exercises are commonly prescribed to improve shoulder range following axillary burns, but the effect of additional splinting is unclear.
AIM: To compare splinting and exercise to exercise alone in adults with axillary burns.
METHOD: Prospective randomised study allocating participants to a splinting (n=27) or no splinting group (n=25). Outcomes measured at six and twelve weeks were shoulder abduction and flexion range, quality of life using the Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief (BSHS-B) questionnaire and upper limb function using the Upper Extremity Functional Index (UEFI) and t

The use of splints in neurorehabilitation is common, with splints being used to meet varied clinical aims. This paper explores the use of splints after stroke and examines the rationale underpinning current use. It covers the use of splints to reduce spasticity, prevent contracture and improve activity. As well as presenting the theoretical rationale underpinning splinting as an intervention, it examines the current evidence from randomised trials testing the theories. In summary, there is strong evidence that wearing a splint all night has no additional effect in reducing spasticity over usua

The treatment of a crooked nose is one of the most challenging rhinoplastic procedures. Correction of the abnormally curved or fractured septum has been reported using mostly scoring techniques, septoplasty and submucous resection techniques; cartilaginous spreader grafts can also be sutured to the distorted septum. Extracorporal septal straightening and repositioning/refixation is another useful but difficult technique. A common problem of septal cartilaginous grafting techniques is to harvest enough straight cartilage to correct the deformity. (Other donor sites such as rib cartilage are use

OBJECTIVES: To describe a new method of postoperative eyelid suspension used for the prevention of eyelid malposition and to report its efficacy through an outcome study.
STUDY DESIGN: An outcome study was performed on 10 patients who would potentially need postoperative eyelid suspension. Candidates included patients with entropion, ectropion, or orbital fractures requiring transconjunctival approaches. Patients were photographed pre- and postoperatively and followed for signs of eyelid malposition.
METHODS: At the conclusion of the surgical procedure, a sheet of Xeroform gauze was folded i

The prevention and management of microstomia contracture is very important for the quality of life in a patient who has experienced facial burns. Mouth opening is important for speech, eating, dental hygiene, expression, social interaction, psychosocial well being, and administrating general anesthesia. Principles of scar management state a need for opposing horizontal, vertical, and circumferential forces for effective management of microstomia. At the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, horizontal and circumferential stretch was provided well; however, a suitable vertical stretch component

The management of trauma to the commissures has been an ongoing challenge for the medical and dental professions. Multiple surgical and prosthetic approaches have been used. Commissure splint therapy is often effective in association with surgery in reducing the effects of scar contraction that ultimately results in microstomia and reduced quality of life. This article describes methods of fabrication of the commissure splint appliance, the rationale for its modification, advantages, and disadvantages.

Hand surgery : an international journal devoted to hand and upper limb surgery and related research : journal of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand2002eng
The prognosis and speed of peripheral nerve recovery depend very much on the level of injury, severity of injury, the surgical intervention and the subsequent rehabilitative process. Many high level injuries may take years or months for the affected peripheral nerve to recover. Prolonged muscle imbalance causes joint contractures and over-stretching of denervated muscles. Without proper care, hand function recovery may be limited even the nerve regenerated afterwards. During the nerve regeneration period, splinting is one of the most useful modality to minimise deformities, prevent joint contr

Successful treatment of dorsal foot burns is a challenge. By extrapolating from various treatments of dorsal hand burns the design of a static progressive splint was applied to the treatment of dorsal foot burns to prevent contracture deformities. The splint is composed of a base, dorsal thermoplastic piece, and Velcro strap. Soft hook and loop Velcro encircles the ankle and midfoot providing a base for the attachment of a Velcro strap. A thermoplastic piece is conformed to the dorsum of the toes and then affixed to the Velcro strap. The Velcro strap is then attached to the plantar surface of

The pivot splint was applied to 50 patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome that included 30 patients of anterior disc displacement without reduction, 12 patients of anteriordisc displacement with partial reduction and 8 patients of upward condyle displacement. The mouth opening and joint space of the TMJ tomographies before and after treatment were measured for each case. The results indicated that treatment with pivot splint was very effective for the patients with downward diplacemenr of the condyle. As a result, among 50 patients, 36 patients were cured (72%) and 14 patie

I have used this splint on 16 patients between November 1992 and July 1993. The device works as well as or better than other similarly designed thermoplastic nasal splints that are commercially available, and it is significantly less expensive. Commercially available splints run about 5 to 10 dollars per unit. This device as described costs approximately 50 cents per unit. This method of external splinting of the nose is extremely reliable and satisfactory to both myself and the patient. No splint is unobtrusive, and I have found that my patients like these bright and colorful splints.

The authors present a new mechanical exercise splint for the hip. The appliance carries out movements in three dimensions and is used early in the postoperative period following surgical treatment of the hip and surrounding structures for continuous passive motion (CPM) treatment. When the hip is flexed, the knee bends at the same time. It is possible, however, for the part of the leg cradle that holds the lower leg to be locked in the extended position to avoid any problems for patients with arthrodesis in the knee. It is also advisable for knee movement to be blocked when the patient does ex

An expanding oral plastic splint for preventing microstomia from deep facial burns is described. This splint adjusts to suit the affected oral angles without the need for taking any impression before fabrication. It is especially suitable for severely injured patients starting from the early period shortly after injury, even if the patient has been intubated. Furthermore the expansion forces can be controlled easily according to the degree of contracture.

An individual mouth splint device that applies continuous or intermittent pressure to stretch commissures and fibrotic muscles in patients treated for microstomia resulting from facial and neck burns is presented. After an individual lip tray is prepared, the method uses the impression and cast of the region of the lips to construct a pink acrylic resin splint. By using the device, split horizontally and activated with a Hyrx screw, an opening of 14 mm can be obtained within 2 weeks. The device is recommended as being easily constructed, inexpensive, almost painlessly inserted, and progressive

Modification of a hand splint for a musician who had suffered an incomplete disruption of the left ring finger extensor tendon is described. This modification enabled the patient to receive the benefit of conservative treatment of this disruption while continuing his employment. The modification can be performed easily with the standard stack splint; the success of this method is described.

A prospective review of 108 cases of dysplasia of the hip treated with a new dynamic splint is presented. The success rate in restoring the acetabular angle was 100%, with no incidence of ischemic necrosis.
