Improving Antibiotic Use in Argentine Pediatric Hospitals: A Process Evaluation Using Normalization Process Theory.

INTRODUCTION: In the pediatric setting, overprescribing of antibiotics contributes to the rise of multidrug-resistant organisms. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) are recommended to optimize antibiotic use and combat resistance. However, the implementation of ASPs in low- and middle-income countries faces several challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation process of a multifaceted ASP in 2 pediatric hospitals in Argentina. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted in two large public children's hospitals in Argentina, using semistructured interviews with 32 healthcar

Development of a Tailored, Complex Intervention for Clinical Reflection and Communication about Suspected Urinary Tract Infections in Nursing Home Residents.

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate antibiotic treatments for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in nursing homes cause the development of resistant bacteria. Nonspecific symptoms and asymptomatic bacteriuria are drivers of overtreatment. Nursing home staff provide general practice with information about ailing residents; therefore, their knowledge and communication skills influence prescribing. This paper describes the development of a tailored, complex intervention for a cluster-randomised trial that targets the knowledge of UTI and communication skills in nursing home staff to reduce antibiotic prescrip

A joint health and criminal justice initiative across England and Wales, called the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) Pathway, aims to support individuals with a likely diagnosis of personality disorder with services across different prison and community settings. Pathways Enhanced Resettlement Services (PERS) are OPD services operating in five open prisons in England, which aim to support people at high risk of being

Exposure to challenging behaviours and burnout symptoms among care staff: the role of psychological resources.

BACKGROUND: Staff supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities are at risk of burnout symptoms. Evidence suggests an association between exposure to challenging behaviours of individuals with intellectual disabilities and burnout symptoms of staff, but the protective role of staff psychological resources in this relation has been understudied. METHOD: We investigated the association between exposure to challenging behaviours and burnout symptoms of staff and the direct and moderating effects of several psychological resources. Staff (N = 1271) completed an online survey concerning bu

Dignity in interactions from the viewpoint of staff in long-term care facilities: A qualitative study.

AIM: To explore the elements of dignity in interaction and the residents' individual dignity from the viewpoint of staff in long-term care facilities. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted twice with each participant using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to understand staff experiences and clarify how they understood the meaning of dignity and dignified care. After theme generation, a panel of seven experts reviewed the themes. The previously established framework of the conceptual matrix derived from the residents' perspective was used to verify the applicability of the result.

Critical thinking of nurse managers related to staff RNs' perceptions of the practice environment.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Critical thinking (CT) skills and the inclination to engage in critical thinking are essential for nurse managers to function as transformational leaders capable of influencing staff to align with organizational goals. In an extensive literature review, numerous studies were found examining the concept of CT in students and no studies were found exploring CT in nurse managers. Identifying the attributes, such as CT, that lead to success in the nurse manager role is useful when preparing nurse managers to lead effectively in the current healt

Radiation-associated lens changes in the cardiac catheterization laboratory: Results from the IC-CATARACT (CATaracts Attributed to RAdiation in the CaTh lab) study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and the prevalence of lens changes in interventional cardiologists (ICs) and catheterization laboratory ("cath-lab") staff. BACKGROUND: Exposure to ionizing radiation is associated with the development of lens opacities. ICs and cath-lab staff can receive high doses of ionizing radiation without protection, and may thus be at risk for lens opacity formation. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at an interventional cardiology conference. Study participants completed a questionnaire pertaining

Use of oseltamivir during an outbreak of influenza A in a long-term care facility in Taiwan.

We studied the effectiveness of oseltamivir during an outbreak of influenza A among previously vaccinated patients and staff in a long-term care facility. Seven of 14 staff members and 14 of 41 residents developed either influenza-like illness (ILI) or other respiratory symptoms during a 14-day period from late January to 8 February 2004. On 9 February, therapeutic oseltamivir (75 mg twice daily for five days) was administered to one staff member and seven residents who had developed ILI within the previous 48 h (treatment group). Prophylactic oseltamivir (75 mg once daily for seven days) was

Popular Culture and Pornography Education to Improve the Efficacy of Secondary School Staff Response to Student Sexual Harassment.

As middle and high school students consume and create their own pornography or use it as a form of violence perpetration known as image-based sexual abuse, school staff struggle to find appropriate responses to these issues. As pornography use becomes more prevalent, and discourse on sexual violence more public, pornography education could become a tool for preventing sexual violence and promoting sexual health. In response, we explored the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of PopPorn, a 4-module pornography and IBSA professional development training program in a sample of staff who work fo

The impact of Recovery Colleges on mental health staff, services and society.

AIMS: Recovery Colleges are opening internationally. The evaluation focus has been on outcomes for Recovery College students who use mental health services. However, benefits may also arise for: staff who attend or co-deliver courses; the mental health and social care service hosting the Recovery College; and wider society. A theory-based change model characterising how Recovery Colleges impact at these higher levels is needed for formal evaluation of their impact, and to inform future Recovery College development. The aim of this study was to develop a stratified theory identifying candidate

Internationally studied parameters related to the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing homes: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Nursing homes were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Standardised parameters are essential to understand and monitor the unintended consequences of pandemic control measures and changes in work processes. In this scoping review, we aimed to identify COVID-19-related parameters studied in nursing homes that could form a minimum data set suitable for database development. We focused on the perspectives of all interest-holders: facilities, residents, their relatives and nursing home staff. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE and CINAHL and included quantitative studies published i
