Prosthesis size distribution in Oxford phase III unicompartmental knee arthroplasty - Based on more than 1900 Chinese patients.

INTRODUCTION: It is difficult to determine the optimal size of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) prosthesis both pre-operatively and intra-operatively. Inappropriate femoral and tibial components are still the leading cause of failure. Several guidelines based on the Western population may not apply to the Chinese patients. We consequently try to investigate distributions of Oxford-UKA prosthesis in Chinese patients in order to provide a good reference for surgeons preoperatively. METHODS: From January 2010 to December 2019, 1909 patients (2307 knees) with primary anteromedial osteoart

Evaluating atrial fibrillations through strange attractors dynamics.

Nonlinear dynamics is nowadays widely employed in the study of biological phenomena. In such context, taking into account that abnormal heart rhythms display chaotic behaviours, in our opinion, the specific attractor dynamics can constitute a method for evaluating various cardiac afflictions. By using mathematical procedures specific to nonlinear dynamics we devise a new method for evaluating atrial fibrillations. Using data from ECG signals, we construct strange attractors corresponding to the phase space, specific to the analyzed signals. We show that their dynamics reflect abnormal heart rh

Distance-based analysis of variance for brain connectivity.

The field of neuroimaging dedicated to mapping connections in the brain is increasingly being recognized as key for understanding neurodevelopment and pathology. Networks of these connections are quantitatively represented using complex structures, including matrices, functions, and graphs, which require specialized statistical techniques for estimation and inference about developmental and disorder-related changes. Unfortunately, classical statistical testing procedures are not well suited to high-dimensional testing problems. In the context of global or regional tests for differences in neur

An agent-based model to simulate tsetse fly distribution and control techniques: a case study in Nguruman, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: African trypanosomiasis, also known as "sleeping sickness" in humans and "nagana" in livestock is an important vector-borne disease in Sub-Saharan Africa. Control of trypanosomiasis has focused on eliminating the vector, the tsetse fly (Glossina, spp.). Effective tsetse fly control planning requires models to predict tsetse population and distribution changes over time and space. Traditional planning models have used statistical tools to predict tsetse distributions and have been hindered by limited field survey data. METHODOLOGY/RESULTS: We developed an Agent-Based Model (ABM) to

Research on the Medical Structured Data Desensitization Method Based on a Bayesian Network.

To address the prevalent privacy concerns associated with patient data in current clinical medical data analysis, this paper proposes a medical structured data desensitization method based on Bayesian Network. The proposed method involves constructing a data generation model by learning the statistical and correlational attributes of the original dataset, thereby producing a desensitized dataset that maintains characteristic probability similarity with the source data. The experimental results, based on the analysis of clinical data, demonstrate that the desensitized data generated by this met

ASRL: Correlation-robust pedestrian attribute recognition via fixed orthogonal classifier.

Pedestrian attribute recognition (PAR) aims to achieve robust prediction of multiple binary attributes in pedestrian images. Traditional PAR methods employ joint learning of a backbone network to extract shared features and a linear classifier to predict binary attributes. However, this paradigm faces key challenges: (1) the shared feature category grows exponentially with the number of attribute combinations up to 2C categories where C is the total number of attributes, (2) significant intra-class variance leads to uneven feature distributions, and (3) statistical correlations among attribute

Testing for marginal covariate effect when the subgroup size induced by the covariate is informative.

In many cluster-correlated data analyses, informative cluster size poses a challenge that can potentially introduce bias in statistical analyses. Different methodologies have been introduced in statistical literature to address this bias. In this study, we consider a complex form of informativeness where the number of observations corresponding to latent levels of a unit-level continuous covariate within a cluster is associated with the response variable. This type of informativeness has not been explored in prior research. We present a novel test statistic designed to evaluate the effect of t

Random field-union intersection tests for EEG/MEG imaging.

Electrophysiological (EEG/MEG) imaging challenges statistics by providing two views of the same spatiotemporal data: topographic and tomographic. Until now, statistical tests for these two situations have developed separately. This work introduces statistical tests for assessing simultaneously the significance of spatiotemporal event-related potential/event-related field (ERP/ERF) components and that of their sources. The test for detecting a component at a given time instant is provided by a Hotelling's T(2) statistic. This statistic is constructed in such a manner to be invariant to any choi

Multifractal analysis of wide dynamic range neuron discharge profiles in normal rats and in rats with sciatic nerve constriction.

Using normal rats and rats with a chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve (injured, model of Bennett-Xie) we investigated the possibility of classifying, by statistical tools, the temporal sequences of neuronal discharges during different noxious and non-noxious stimuli. An analysis was made of both the distribution of the inter-spike intervals and the temporal density of spike trains, the latter being studied within the framework of stochastic universal multifractals, to allow the identification of different random processes involved in the discharge distributions through the Lévy in

Population toxicokinetics of tetrachloroethylene.

In assessing the distribution and metabolism of toxic compounds in the body, measurements are not always feasible for ethical or technical reasons. Computer modeling offers a reasonable alternative, but the variability and complexity of biological systems pose unique challenges in model building and adjustment. Recent tools from population pharmacokinetics, Bayesian statistical inference, and physiological modeling can be brought together to solve these problems. As an example, we modeled the distribution and metabolism of tetrachloroethylene (PERC) in humans. We derive statistical distributio

Association of Statistical Methodology and Design in Preclinical Animal Studies With Successful Translation Into Clinical Phase 2 Trials.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Preclinical-to-clinical translational failure is common in neurologic research. Reasons for translational failure are complex and multifaceted, but it is increasingly recognized that translational decision making may be influenced by preclinical work that is overly optimistic, due to a lack of scientific rigor. Previous research has demonstrated that statistical errors are common in preclinical research, yet results of preclinical null hypothesis significance testing contribute to the body of evidence used to evaluate whether a new intervention is a candidate for tra

Temporomandibular Joint Sound Frequencies and Mouth-Opening Distances: Effect of Gender and Age.

Background/Objectives: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) affect the temporomandibular joint and associated structures of the stomatognathic system. Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA) is a non-invasive method used to assess TMJ dysfunction through vibration frequencies. This study aimed to explore how age and gender influence TMJ vibration characteristics, hypothesizing that these factors may affect diagnostic accuracy in TMJ evaluations. Methods: This cross-sectional study includes 251 participants (143 females and 108 males) aged 10 to 30 years. TMJ evaluation used JVA to assess range of m

Towards an Analytical System for Supervising Fairness, Robustness, and Dataset Shifts in Health AI.

Ensuring trustworthy use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) requires continuous evaluation of their performance and fairness, given the potential impact on patient safety and individual rights as high-risk AI systems. However, the practical implementation of health AI performance and fairness monitoring dashboards presents several challenges. Confusion-matrix-derived performance and fairness metrics are non-additive and cannot be reliably aggregated or disaggregated across time or population subgroups. Furthermore, acquiring ground-truth labels or s

On the ratios and the logarithms of dark colors in image processing.

In image processing and color science, colors are often specified by their luminance and chromaticity (such as Y x y). Chromaticities are color ratios, which can be difficult to compute reliably due to noise, when the tristimulus values are small, e.g., for dark colors. A detailed statistical analysis of ratio distributions shows that below a certain signal/noise ratio, the computed color ratios are very noisy and often wrong. This contrasts with human vision, where a given chromaticity viewed at high luminance will appear to the viewer as having a distinct color, but when that same chromatici

Modelling the occurrence and spatial distribution of screwworm species in Northern Pakistan.

We use binomial kriging to model the spatial distribution of myiasis by three species namely Chrysomya bezziana, Wohlfahrtia magnifica and Lucilia cuprina in the livestock of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Traditional species distribution models are usually based on assumption of independence of observations. Species data often come in presence-only form for which background points are generated based on some covariates using statistical and machine learning techniques such as MaxEnt. We assume a symmetric binomial distribution based on the principle of maximum entropy in order to decide the nu

Molecular Dynamics Fingerprints (MDFP): Machine Learning from MD Data To Predict Free-Energy Differences.

While the use of machine-learning (ML) techniques is well established in cheminformatics for the prediction of physicochemical properties and binding affinities, the training of ML models based on data from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations remains largely unexplored. Here, we present a fingerprint termed MDFP which is constructed from the distributions of properties such as potential-energy components, radius of gyration, and solvent-accessible surface area extracted from MD simulations. The corresponding fingerprint elements are the first two statistical moments of the distributions and th

Comparison of micro-level and continuum-level voxel models of the proximal femur.

Continuum-level finite element (FE) models became standard computational tools for the evaluation of bone mechanical behavior from in vivo computed tomography scans. Such scans do not account for the anisotropy of the bone. Instead, local mechanical properties in the continuum-level FE models are assumed isotropic and are derived from bone density, using statistical relationships. Micro-FE models, on the other hand, incorporate the anisotropic structure in detail. This study aimed to quantify the effects of assumed isotropy, by comparing continuum-level voxel models of a healthy and a severely
