INTRODUCTION: Superposing 3D models is an imminent need. However, current methods rely on marking multiple points on the maxilla and mandible, which could increase point marking and overlapping errors.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at developing a method for superimposing 3D models of the maxillary and mandibular arches with Autodesk Inventor® engineering software, using a single universal coordinate system (UCS) point superposition.
METHODS: A total of 104 STL (stereolithography) models of the maxillary and mandibular arches exported from My iTero® platform were retrospectively selected, in w

OBJECTIVES: Surgeons often encounter challenges when treating maxillofacial fractures using conventional methods that involve trimming or bending ready-made titanium plates for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) since it can be time-consuming, imprecise, and inconvenient. This retrospective case series aimed to introduce a novel bone reduction method that utilizes virtual planning, patient-specific surgical guides, and titanium plates.
METHODS: Seven patients with mandibular symphysis or subcondylar fractures resulting from facial trauma underwent cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)

BACKGROUND: Orbital blowout fracture reconstruction often requires an implant, which must be shaped at the time of surgical intervention. This process is time-consuming and requires multiple placement trials, possibly risking complications. Three-dimensional printing technology has enabled health care facilities to generate custom anatomical models to which implants can be molded to precisely match orbital anatomy. The authors present their early experience with these models and their use in optimizing orbital fracture fixation.
METHODS: Maxillofacial computed tomographic scans from patients

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is capable of transforming intricate digital models into tangible objects, allowing geoscientists to replicate the geometry of 3D pore networks of sedimentary rocks. We provide a refined method for building scalable pore-network models ("proxies") using stereolithography 3D printing that can be used in repeated flow experiments (e.g., core flooding, permeametry, porosimetry). Typically, this workflow involves two steps, model design and 3D printing. In this study, we explore how the addition of post-processing and validation can reduce uncertainty in the 3D-prin

Post-processing remains a major bottleneck in the fabrication of microfluidic devices using Digital Light Processing Stereolithography (DLP-SLA) 3D printing, where unpolymerized resin trapped within internal structures must be removed without damaging delicate features such as thin membranes, valves, and pumps. Manual flushing is slow, inconsistent, and prone to structural failure, especially as device complexity and port counts increase. Here, we present the first fully automated flushing system for DLP-SLA microfluidic devices, enabled by a standardized chip-to-chip (C2C) interconnect archit

BACKGROUND: Lung segmentectomy offers the advantages of preserving pulmonary function and improving patient survival, leading to its increased adoption. However, this procedure is technically demanding, especially when compared with lobectomy, owing to anatomical shifts from intraoperative lung collapse and manipulation. To support thoracic surgeons and enhance their surgical training, we developed a low-cost, patient-specific, and bendable three-dimensional (3D) pulmonary vessel model. This study describes the development, clinical application, and evaluation of this model.

The biopharmaceutical industry for engineered protein drugs is rapidly increasing in size but there is a lack of controlled release vehicles to enable targeted delivery for regenerative medicine applications. In this study, we used photocrosslinkable 3-sulfopropyl acrylate potassium salt (SPAK)-poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels to achieve controlled release of lysozyme for 70 days with zero-order release and tuneable release rate. Scaling down hydrogel volume and protein loading concentration to release Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) and Interleukin-4 (IL-4) result

Organ shortages for transplantation in the United States impact over 100 000 patients, with 17 dying daily due to the lack of available organs. This growing need is exacerbated by the limited functionality and disease risk of donated organs. Tissue-engineered organs present a promising alternative, requiring optimized scaffold architecture and cell integration. Vascular networks within organs are essential for supplying oxygen and nutrients to cells, with a critical distance between blood vessels and surrounding tissue to allow effective diffusion. Various microfabrication techniques, such as

Cardiac catheterization for congenital heart disease (CHD) performed under fluoroscopic guidance still lacks definition and requires exposure to ionizing radiation and contrast agents, with most patients needing multiple procedures through their lifetime, leading to cumulative radiation risks. While fusion overlay techniques have been employed in the past to aid, these have been limited to a single plane, while interventions are traditionally performed under biplane fluoroscopy. We describe our initial experience performing cardiac catheterizations guided by an enhanced biplane GuideCCI system

Despite polyester vascular grafts being routinely used in life-saving aortic aneurysm surgeries, they are less compliant than the healthy, native human aorta. This mismatch in mechanical behaviour has been associated with disruption of haemodynamics contributing to several long-term cardiovascular complications. Moreover, current fabrication approaches mean that opportunities to personalise grafts to the individual anatomical features are limited. Various modifications to graft design have been investigated to overcome such limitations; yet optimal graft functionality remains to be achieved. T

Non-invasive hemodynamic assessment of total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) is challenging due to the complex anatomy. Additive manufacturing (AM) is a suitable alternative for creating patient-specific in vitro models for flow measurements using four-dimensional (4D) Flow MRI. These in vitro systems have the potential to serve as validation for computational fluid dynamics (CFD), simulating different physiological conditions. This study investigated three different AM technologies, stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS) and fused deposition modeling (FDM), to determine diff

BACKGROUND: In recent years, 3D printing technology has become inexpensive and simple enough that any lab can own and use one of these printers.
NEW METHOD: We explored the potential use of 3D printers for quickly and easily producing in vitro slice chambers for patch clamp electrophysiology. Slice chambers were produced using five available plastics: ABS, PLA, Nylon 618, Nylon 680, and T-glase. These "lab-made" chambers were also made using stereolithography through a professional printing service (Shapeways). This study measured intrinsic membrane properties of neurons in the brain stem ped

Additive manufacturing is transforming how microfluidic devices are prototyped and fabricated. Among various 3D printing methods, stereolithography (SLA) has become a dominant technique for microfluidics due to its high resolution and design flexibility, with widespread use in lab-on-a-chip applications. However, intrinsic limitations of SLA printing, such as challenges related to multi-material integration and microstructure fabrication in enclosed channels, continue to hinder the development of more complex microsystems, especially for analytical separation and tissue engineering application
