When do stereotypes undermine indirect reciprocity?

Social reputations provide a powerful mechanism to stimulate human cooperation, but observing individual reputations can be cognitively costly. To ease this burden, people may rely on proxies such as stereotypes, or generalized reputations assigned to groups. Such stereotypes are less accurate than individual reputations, and so they could disrupt the positive feedback between altruistic behavior and social standing, undermining cooperation. How do stereotypes impact cooperation by indirect reciprocity? We develop a theoretical model of group-structured populations in which individuals are ass

The effects of methylphenidate on the classroom behavior of elementary school-age children with cerebral palsy: a preliminary observational analysis.

High- and low-dose methylphenidate administration was evaluated prospectively for 3 elementary school-age children with cerebral palsy, cognitive impairments, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms using single-case, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled designs. An observational time sampling protocol was used to directly measure and quantify classroom behavior. Summary level analysis showed that (1) low-dose (0.3 mg/kg/dose) administration was associated with clinically significant (>50%) reductions in stereotyped and disruptive behavior relative to baseline and

Buspirone for stereotypic movements in elderly with cognitive impairment.

Repetitive and stereotypic behavioral disturbances in patients with dementia are common; however, little is known regarding successful treatments. The authors describe six cases of elderly cognitively impaired patients exhibiting repetitive and stereotypic behaviors who were treated successfully with buspirone. The cases demonstrate that buspirone may be an effective and safe treatment for patients with dementia who demonstrate repetitive and stereotypic behavior disorders.

The Influence of Stable Management and Feeding Practices on the Abnormal Behaviors Among Stabled Horses in Malaysia.

The present study aimed to provide preliminary data on the prevalence of oral stereotypic, locomotory stereotypic, and redirected behaviors as well as their associations with stable management and feeding practices. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 207 working horses used for leisure riding, equestrian sport, polo, endurance, and patrolling were selected from seven equine facilities. Data on the stable management and feeding practices were obtained through the stable records, interviews, and on-site monitoring visits, whereas the prevalence of abnormal behaviors in the studied populat

The physiological consequences of crib-biting in horses in response to an ACTH challenge test.

Stereotypies are repetitive and relatively invariant patterns of behavior, which are observed in a wide range of species in captivity. Stereotypic behavior occurs when environmental demands produce a physiological response that, if sustained for an extended period, exceeds the natural physiological regulatory capacity of the organism, particularly in situations that include unpredictability and uncontrollability. One hypothesis is that stereotypic behavior functions to cope with stressful environments, but the existing evidence is contradictory. To address the coping hypothesis of stereotypies

Super-stereotypy I: enhancement of a complex movement sequence by systemic dopamine D1 agonists.

Peripheral administration of D1 dopamine agonists elicits grooming behavior from rodents. The present study examined grooming behavior and the relative probability and stereotypy of a natural sequence of grooming movements (called a syntactic grooming chain) that follows a predictable fixed pattern of serial order. We compared the amount of grooming behavior vs. the stereotypy of sequential patterns after peripheral administration of either a partial D1 agonist (SKF 38393; 2.5, 5.0, 10, 20 mg/kg), a full D1 agonist (SKF 82958; 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 mg/kg; i.p.), a D2 agonist (quinpirole; 5.0, 10

Effects of mindful breathing meditation on stereotype expression in two randomized controlled double-blinded trials.

Models of stereotypes and discrimination propose the involvement of attentional control and executive functioning in successfully suppressing discriminatory behavior. A practice that has been shown to improve cognitive control, potentially even after short training durations, is mindfulness meditation, and beneficial effects on stereotype activation and the expression of discriminatory behavior have been reported. In two randomized controlled double-blinded trials, the effects of short mindful breathing meditation trainings (45 minutes in total in Experiment 1, 80 minutes in Experiment 2) on t

Histamine H3 receptor agonists decrease hypothalamic histamine levels and increase stereotypical biting in mice challenged with methamphetamine.

The effects of the histamine H(3) receptor agonists (R)-α-methylhistamine, imetit and immepip on methamphetamine (METH)-induced stereotypical behavior were examined in mice. The administration of METH (10 mg/kg, i.p.) to male ddY mice induced behaviors including persistent locomotion and stereotypical behaviors, which were classified into four categories: stereotypical head-bobbing (1.9%), circling (1.7%), sniffing (14.3%), and biting (82.1%). Pretreatment with (R)-α-methylhistamine (3 and 10 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly decreased stereotypical sniffing, but increased stereotypical biting induce

Intracerebroventricular administration of cholecystokinin reduces stereotypy in dopamine-supersensitive rats.

Cholecystokinin (CCK-8) coexists with dopamine in some neurons and modulates dopaminergic neurotransmission. In the present study we determined the effect of CCK-8 on stereotyped behavior in supersensitive dopaminergic system. Adult male Wistar rats, weighing 200-250 g, were used. Dopaminergic supersensitivity was induced by long-term haloperidol (HAL) treatment (30 days: 1.0 mg/kg twice a day). Seventy-two hours after HAL withdrawal animals received CCK-8 (14.5 nmol/5 microliters) or saline intracerebroventricularly (icv) before being tested for apomorphine (APO, 0.6 mg/kg, sc)-induced stereo

Ironic Effects of Sexual Minority Group Membership: Are Lesbians Less Susceptible to Invoking Negative Female Stereotypes than Heterosexual Women?

The traditional stereotype of the typical woman has been described as "nice, but incompetent." However, such general gender stereotypes are applied to individual targets only under certain conditions: They are used to "fill in the blanks" (Heilman, 2012) if little personal information is provided about a target. "Typical lesbians" are regarded to have more typically masculine (agentic) characteristics such as task competence than the typical woman does. We thus hypothesized that if a woman displays behavior coinciding with the stereotype of the typical woman, it is more readily interpreted as

Effects of single-use and group-use enrichment on stereotypy and intragroup aggressive and affiliative behaviors of a social group of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) at the Singapore Zoo.

Four food-based enrichment devices were used to test the effects of single-use and group-use enrichment devices on stereotypy, intragroup aggression, and affiliation in a compatible group of 5 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). All enrichment devices were found to reduce overall stereotypic behavior from baseline levels (without enrichment). The occurrence of stereotypic behavior differed between individual squirrel monkeys with an adult female showing the highest level of stereotypic behavior. This individual also showed the highest usage of enrichment devices, and stereotypic behavior was

[Behavioral changes induced by repeated administration of mazindol, an anorexiant, in rats].

Behavioral changes in locomotor activity and stereotyped behaviors induced by daily administration (for 7 days) of mazindol (5 and 10 mg/kg, po) were compared with those induced by methamphetamine (10 mg/kg) in rats. On day 1, mazindol increased locomotor activity, which was enhanced by daily administrations. Stereotyped behaviors were also induced by mazindol, which became more marked following daily administrations. Methamphetamine markedly increased stereotyped behavior rather than locomotor activity on day 1, and the effects were not enhanced by daily administrations. The increased locomot

Capturing continuous, long timescale behavioral changes in Drosophila melanogaster postural data.

Animal behavior spans many timescales, from short, seconds-scale actions to circadian rhythms over many hours to life-long changes during aging. Most quantitative behavior studies have focused on short-timescale behaviors such as locomotion and grooming. Analysis of these data suggests there exists a hierarchy of timescales; however, the limited duration of these experiments prevents the investigation of the full temporal structure. To access longer timescales of behavior, we continuously recorded individual Drosophila melanogaster at 100 frames per second for up to 7 days at a time in feature

Effect of environmental enrichment devices on behaviors of single- and group-housed squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

Squirrel monkeys display an interest in novel places, habituate to new situations, and spend most of their daily activity in the wild in large groups engaging in feeding behaviors over a broad area. Captivity limits these behaviors and consequently may disrupt normal social organizations. In captivity, squirrel monkeys may exhibit stereotypical behaviors that are believed to indicate decreased psychologic well-being. When a monkey's behavior can be made to approach that seen in the wild, and stereotypical behaviors are minimal, it is assumed that psychologic well-being is adequate. Environment

Effects of gendered behavior on testosterone in women and men.

Testosterone is typically understood to contribute to maleness and masculinity, although it also responds to behaviors such as competition. Competition is crucial to evolution and may increase testosterone but also is selectively discouraged for women and encouraged for men via gender norms. We conducted an experiment to test how gender norms might modulate testosterone as mediated by two possible gender→testosterone pathways. Using a novel experimental design, participants (trained actors) performed a specific type of competition (wielding power) in stereotypically masculine vs. feminine ways

A functional separation of behavioral stereotypy based on naloxone-reversible effects of seryl enkephalinamide: comparison with morphine.

Amphetamine's stereotypic behavioral actions, produced by the stimulant at a moderate dose, were inhibited by the systemic administration of seryl enkephalinamide, D-Ser2-D-Ser5-enkephalinamide, (Wy 42,896). The classical sequelae of stimulatory behavioral events: sniffing, head bobbing, rearing and locomotor activity, were significantly inhibited by the seryl enkephalinamide. Subsequently, pretreatment with the opiate receptor antagonist, naloxone, significantly blocked the inhibitory effects of the seryl enkephalinamide on the stereotypic and locomotor components. Concomitantly, the behavior

Effects of prenatal immune activation on amphetamine-induced addictive behaviors: Contributions from animal models.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal environmental adversities may affect brain development and are associated with increased risk for schizophrenia, an illness with 50% comorbidity with addiction. Maternal immune activation by poly-inosinic-citidilic acid (Poly(I:C)) exposure can promote behavioral alterations consistent with schizophrenia symptoms in rodents. OBJECTIVES: Considering the vulnerability to addiction in patients with schizophrenia, we evaluated the interactions between prenatal Poly(I:C) administration and addiction in two animal models (behavioral sensitization and conditioned place preferenc

Age-related differences in the acoustic characteristics of male leopard seals, Hydrurga leptonyx.

During the breeding season, the underwater vocalizations and calling rates of adult male leopard seals are highly stereotyped. In contrast, sub-adult males have more variable acoustic behavior. Although adult males produce only five stereotyped broadcast calls as part of their long-range underwater breeding displays the sub-adults have a greater repertoire including the adult-like broadcast calls, as well as variants of these. Whether this extended repertoire has a social function is unknown due to the paucity of behavioral data for this species. The broadcast calls of the sub-adults are less

A dose-response analysis of the behavioral effects of (+)MK-801 in guinea pig: comparison with CPP.

The noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, dizocilpine maleate {(+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]-cyclohepten-5, 10-imine maleate} [(+)MK-801], has attracted considerable interest because of its potential use as an anticonvulsant and neuroprotectant. However, its cognitive side effects in humans have limited its use in human pharmacotherapy. Although the behavioral effects of (+)MK-801 have been documented in mouse, rat, pigeon, and rhesus monkey, there are no available data on its effects in guinea pig. The objective of this study was to conduct a dose-response analys
