Effects of multisensory environments on stereotyped behaviours assessed as maintained by automatic reinforcement.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the sensory equipment provided in a multi-sensory environment (MSE) and the level of social contact provided on levels of stereotyped behaviours assessed as being maintained by automatic reinforcement. METHOD: Stereotyped and engaged behaviours of two young people with severe intellectual disabilities were observed while the participants were either in a living room or in a MSE and receiving either high or low levels of interaction from carers. RESULTS: For both participants, levels of stereotyped behaviour were lower in

Sex differences in repetitive stereotyped behaviors in autism: implications for genetic liability.

The implications of the well known sex differences in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are not well understood. The aim of this paper was to investigate whether these differences might be associated with differences in genetic liability. Individuals with ASD (970 families, 2,028 individuals) were recruited as part of the Autism Genome Project (AGP). The families were differentiated into families containing a female (either female-female or male-female) and those with only males. If the sex with the lower prevalence is associated with a greater genetic liability necessary to cro

Stereotypic behaviour in farm mink (Neovison vison) can be reduced by selection.

In this article we present the first estimation of genetic variation of stereotypic behaviour (SB). Stereotypic behaviour is defined as an unvarying behaviour without any specific goal or function repeated at least five times. All types of SB were included in the analyses. Altogether 1484 adult mink females of the brown colour type were assessed for behaviour traits: SB, active or inactive behaviour, staying in nest box. Genetic correlations were based on estimates of additive genetic (co)variances obtained from a trivariate linear animal model fitted to behaviour traits, body weight and litte

Evaluation of stimulus control over a communication response as an intervention for stereotypical responding.

Stereotypical behavior maintained by automatic reinforcement often does not result in harm but may be undesirable in some situations. In the current investigation, participants were 2 individuals who engaged in nonharmful stereotypical responses shown in an analogue functional analysis to be insensitive to social contingencies. After bringing these responses under stimulus control using differential punishment, both participants learned a mand to terminate punishment for stereotypy. We also assessed whether the mand could be brought under stimulus control.

Beyond masculine stereotypes: moving men's health promotion forward in Australia.

There has been increased interest in men's health over the past two decades. A major focus has been on men's apparent reluctance to seek health-related help. As such, innovative methods to facilitate health promotion engagement and preventive health practices among men have emerged. Men's health promotion activity in Australia has paid particular attention to settings and social marketing approaches. These, more often than not, have been aligned to hegemonic constructions of masculinity. As such, traditional gender-roles are perpetuated, which may, despite best intentions, reinforce negative h

Dog breed stereotype and exposure to negative behavior: effects on perceptions of adoptability.

The purpose of the study was to determine if brief exposure to a dog behaving badly or in a friendly manner affects subsequent perceptions of the target dog's and other dogs' adoptability. Participants viewed a videotape of an adoptable German shepherd behaving either aggressively or prosocially and were then asked to rate the characteristics and adoptability of the same and different dogs. The results showed that people who saw the aggressive behavioral schema perceived only the target dog and a dog of the same breed to be significantly less adoptable than dogs of other breeds (p<.01). Dopamine uptake inhibition is positively correlated with cocaine-induced stereotyped behavior.

Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry on freely moving rats was used to determine whether a correlation exists between the increase in stereotyped behavior and dopamine (DA) uptake inhibition following cocaine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) administration. Voltammetric recordings were performed every 100 ms at a carbon fiber microelectrode, positioned in the nucleus accumbens. The present experiments revealed that the time course of the changes in K(m) strictly parallels the time course of the increase in stereotypy after cocaine. More importantly, the magnitudes of cocaine-stimulated stereotypy were positively and

[The immune system of the skin and stereotyped reaction patterns in inflammatory skin diseases].

The clinical and histological presentation of inflammatory disease in the skin is exceedingly heterogeneous. Nonetheless, most inflammatory dermatoses can be classified according to five stereotypical tissue-reaction patterns: the spongiotic, the lichenoid, the psoriasiform, the vesiculo-bullous and the vasculopathic. By means of potent antigen-presenting cells, cytokine and chemokine cascades and a skin-specific cutaneous lymphocyte antigen (CLA)-positive lymphocyte population, the skin is able to respond very efficiently to pathogens that threaten the individual. Inflammatory skin diseases f

Striatal opioid peptide content in an animal model of spontaneous stereotypic behavior.

Stereotypic behaviors are associated with a broad spectrum of developmental, psychiatric, and genetic disorders. Several lines of evidence indicate that these abnormal repetitive behaviors may be expressed as a consequence of imbalanced activity along the direct and indirect processing pathways of the basal ganglia. Because the activity of these two pathways is modulated, in part, by the neuropeptides dynorphin and enkephalin, we sought to determine whether spontaneous and persistent stereotypy is associated with alterations in striatal neuropeptide content. Specifically, the present study emp

The effect of age on the use of health and self-care information: confronting the stereotype.

PURPOSE: Given stereotypes of older adults, there is the perception that older adults will not use health information technologies. One concern is that practitioners might shy away from providing older patients with health information, and in particular, computerized information. The study's primary objective was to evaluate whether a health information intervention had a differential effect for people of different ages. DESIGN AND METHODS: Quasi-experimental survey data from an assessment of a communitywide informational intervention were used. People were asked about their use of medical re

Environmental enrichment: effects on stereotyped behavior and regional neuronal metabolic activity.

The present study evaluated whether environmental enrichment-related effects on the development of stereotyped behavior in deer mice were associated with alterations in neuronal metabolic activity. Deer mice were reared under either enriched or standard housing conditions for 60 days following weaning. All mice were then placed in automated photocell detectors and classified as either stereotypic or non-stereotypic. Neuronal metabolic activity was then assessed using cytochrome oxidase (CO) histochemistry. The results demonstrated that environmental enrichment significantly increased neuronal

Early development of stereotyped and self-injurious behaviors: II. Age trends.

Thirty-nine infants who were served in early intervention programs and who engaged in stereotyped or self-injurious behaviors were studied weekly from the time they entered the school until they were 3 years old. The development of these behaviors increased and declined over age more slowly than in typical babies. A few children retained the behaviors for long periods, and some were still showing them when they left the program. The hypothesis that body-rocking promotes motor development was not supported. Indeed, body-rocking may be a consequence of motor development. Head-banging seemed to b

Management of horses showing stereotypic behaviour, owner perception and the implications for welfare.

A telephone survey was conducted of 100 racing stables, 100 riding schools and 100 competition establishments (8,427 horses in total) to determine what management practices were being applied to horses showing stereotypic behaviour, and to determine the underlying reasons for them by assessing the perceptions and opinions of the people working with the horses. The results indicated that horse owners are concerned about stereotypic behaviour, first, because it reduces the performance of the animal (31, 30 and 27 per cent of the owners of racing stables, riding schools and competition establishm

Reducing stereotyped behaviour: a comparison of two methods of programming differential reinforcement.

Differential Reinforcement of Other behaviours (DRO) has proven to be successful in reducing challenging behaviour, although the need for staff vigilance can limit its applicability in applied settings. The present study compared the effectiveness of whole-interval DRO with momentary DRO, a less intensive schedule. In a multiple-baseline design, two participants who exhibited high-rate stereotyped behaviours were presented with the two schedules. Momentary DRO was more effective than whole-interval DRO in reducing the targeted stereotypies of one participant, and as effective with the second.

Involvement of dopaminergic mechanisms in racemate pentazocine induced stereotyped behaviour in rats.

Racemate pentazocine was found to induce stereotyped behaviour (SB) in rats. Pretreatment with haloperidol and alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine significantly antagonised dl-pentazocine induced SB. This indicates that dl-pentazocine induces SB by releasing dopamine (DA) from the nigrostriatal and mesolimbic dopaminergic neurones with resultant activation of the postsynaptic striatal and mesolimbic D2 DA receptors by the released DA. However, pretreatment with naloxone failed to significantly modify dl-pentazocine induced SB indicating thereby that opioid mechanisms are not involved in the DA releasing a

Dopamine receptor affinities in vitro and stereotypic activities in vivo of cabergoline in rats.

An ergot alkaloid derivative, cabergoline, and its metabolites were investigated for their affinities for dopamine D1 and D2 receptors in rat striatum in vitro in comparison with those of bromocriptine and pergolide. The affinity for D1 receptors was in the following order: pergolide > des-dimethylaminopropyl cabergoline (FCE21904) > cabergoline > or = bromocriptine > or = des-methyl cabergoline (FCE27395) > or = des-ethylcarbamoyl cabergoline (FCE21590). From the effects of GTP on these affinities for the D1 receptor, cabergoline, some of its metabolites, and pergolide were characterized as a

Use of fluoxetine for the treatment of stereotypical pacing behavior in a captive polar bear.

Stereotypical behaviors are common in captive animals, particularly captive polar bears. Effects of oral administration of fluoxetine on chronic stereotypical and typical behaviors in a captive polar bear were monitored. Fluoxetine treatment terminated stereotypic pacing behavior, facial tic, and huffing/coughing activity. The expression of typical polar bear behaviors was not affected by fluoxetine treatment, although the proportion of time spent engaged in typical behaviors changed during the course of the observation period. Response of the bear to fluoxetine treatment indicated that pharma

Expression of stereotyped behaviour requires stimulation of nigral D1 dopamine receptors.

Dopamine receptors in the pars reticulata of the substantia nigra were inactivated following bilateral injections of N-ethoxycarbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydroquinoline (EEDQ). Loss of D1, but not D2, receptors was associated with a significant decrease in the incidence of stereotyped head-down sniffing elicited by the mixed D1/D2 receptor agonist, apomorphine. The results support the hypothesis that D1 receptors in the substantia nigra are necessary for the expression of dopamine mediated stereotyped behaviour.

The role of adrenoreceptors in control of stereotyped oral behavior in restricted-fed fowls.

Effects on environmentally induced oral stereotypies (object pecking and drinker-directed activity) of preferential antagonists and agonists of adrenoreceptor subtypes were examined in individually caged broiler breeder fowls subjected to chronic food restriction. Three drugs in each category were injected intravenously at three doses, and their effects compared with a saline control treatment. With the antagonists, object pecking was suppressed more by prazosin (alpha 1) and propranolol (beta) than by yohimbine (alpha 2), while drinker-directed activity showed delayed stimulation with yohimbi
