A six-year-old, female, neutered, whippet was presented for evaluation of a severe, sudden-onset right pelvic limb lameness. The extensor mechanism of the right stifle was intact and there was periarticular swelling in the right stifle. Radiography showed a fracture of the distal pole of the patella. The distal fragment was approximately 25% of the patellar length and the fracture was deemed non-reconstructable. Fracture fragment removal was performed arthroscopically, which led to an excellent clinical outcome. The owner considered the dog to be exercising normally at the seven-month postoper

An osteochondral fragment was removed from the caudal pouch of the lateral femorotibial joint in a 2-year-old Trakehner colt by use of arthroscopic surgery and a lateral approach. The approach to this aspect of the femorotibial joints was developed in another horse. The fragment was not attached and resembled an osteochondritis dissecans lesion. The intermittent lameness associated with the fragment resolved after surgical removal. A positive response to diagnostic anesthesia of the femorotibial joint in the absence of a confirmed diagnosis (following radiographic and arthroscopic evaluations

Meniscal injury is the most common comorbidity in canine stifles with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) pathology. Arthroscopic repair for acute tears can be technically challenging and is rarely described. This study evaluates the feasibility of using an all-inside arthroscopic meniscal repair device, Arthrex Meniscal Cinch II™ (MCII) in canine cadaveric stifles and the associated risks of iatrogenic vascular injury (IVI) and cartilage injury (ICI). 20 healthy paired canine cadaveric stifles (25 - 45 kg BW) were divided randomly into two groups of 10. Both groups received transection of the CCL

The absorption and disposition of methotrexate (MTX) in the plasma, synovial fluid (SF), skin, and muscle tissue were studied following administration of a topical MTX gel in rabbits and rats. In rabbits, MTX concentrations in the plasma increased steadily toward the peak (5.9 +/- 2.8 ng mL-1) which appeared at approximately 2 h postdose and declined with the elimination half-life of 4.48 +/- 1.74 h. At 1 h after the topical dose, the MTX concentrations in the skin (49.0 +/- 19.8 micrograms g-1), muscle (12.7 +/- 3.3 ng g-1), and SF (19.2 +/- 10.1 ng g-1) underneath the dosed stifle joint were

Medial patellar luxation (MPL) and cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD) frequently co-occur in dogs, with excessive tibial torsion adding surgical complexity. This study evaluates the clinical outcomes of total proximal tibial osteotomy (tPTO) combined with cranial closing wedge ostectomy (CCWO) for treating MPL and CCLD in dogs exhibiting excessive external tibial torsion. A retrospective case series was conducted at a single referral hospital, including dogs with concomitant MPL and CCLD, exhibiting external tibial torsion ≥20°, and treated with tPTO and CCWO. A total of 31 patients met

Synovial lipomatosis is an uncommon, intra-articular, fat-containing, proliferative lesion with unknown etiology that is rarely reported in dogs. A retrospective study spanning 13 years was conducted to search for cases of canine synovial lipomatosis. Among 188 synovial biopsies of major diarthrodial joints (ie, shoulder, elbow, carpus, hip, stifle, and tarsus) from 186 dogs, 4 cases (2.1%) of synovial lipomatosis were identified. One case occurred in a stifle with chronic lateral patellar luxation. The other 3 cases had microscopic evidence of synovitis (eg, synovial hyperplasia, lymphoplasma

BACKGROUND: Concurrent osteoarthritis is generally present in the stifle joints of dogs with cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD), but it is not known if the degree of osteoarthritis-related changes affects the prognosis. Development of osteophytes is a key radiographic feature of osteoarthritis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the degree of osteophyte formation seen on radiographs and CCLD-related euthanasia in dogs with CCLD.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study including 226 dogs treated for CCLD at two university animal hospitals was performed. Clinical

The medical records of 155 dogs with patellar luxation (PL) from three different centres were analysed. Each case was classified according to the nature of its luxation and any concurrent orthopaedic conditions plus the age at diagnosis were also noted. Measurements relating to angle of inclination (AOI) of the femoral neck and medio-lateral bowing of the femur and tibia at the stifle were also recorded. The femoral and tibial data were compared to dogs with another orthopaedic condition in a case-control assessment. Labradors were most commonly affected (21%). Most luxations were medial (92%)

Current treatments for medial meniscus lesions in association with CCL ruptures have shown disappointing long-term outcomes. Meniscal suturing may improve the outcome, but their clinical application remains limited. This study aims to assess the practicability of a minimally invasive DNT to facilitate meniscal suturing in dogs. Ten stifles of eight client-owned dogs with arthroscopically confirmed CCL disease and medial meniscal tears in the abaxial third of the meniscus were included. The described suture technique was applied under joint distraction using the Titan joint distractor. Surgical

The objective of this study was to test a method for determining the width of the tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) cage without the need for extension of the stifle joint, while producing preoperative radiographs. TTA cage size was determined by applying 4 different methods using radiograph images in mediolateral direction of fully extended stifles of dogs (n=43), with and without naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament disease: parallel shift (PS) method, common tangent (CT) method, «2,1» method (cage size = 2,1 × tibia plateau length - tibial tuberosity width), and margo cranialis (

A 2-month-old Boer doeling weighing 13 kg that was intended for show and breeding was evaluated because of a 2-week history of right hind-limb lameness following suspected trauma sustained during an exhibition. Physical examination revealed a grade 4/5 lameness, stifle instability, and abnormal reciprocal apparatus function consistent with peroneus tertius (PT) rupture. Radiographs showed soft-tissue swelling without fracture. Ultrasonography identified synovial proliferation and a defect at the origin of the PT tendon compared with the contralateral limb. Synovial fluid analysis supported a t
