To determine whether P450IIE1, a microsomal P450 enzyme inducible by ethanol in the liver, is also present and inducible in the alimentary tract, corresponding frozen tissue sections were prepared from rats pair-fed liquid diets containing 36% of total calories as either ethanol or carbohydrate (control) for 3 weeks. Immunohistochemical staining was performed using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method after tissue sections were reacted with antibody against human P450IIE1. In control animals, immunoreactive P450IIE1 was detected only in duodenal and jejunal villous cells. After ethanol treatme

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) can affect the stomatognathic system (SS) and alter tongue performance. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate tongue strength and its relationship with swallowing function in individuals diagnosed with TMD. Fifty adults participated (32 with TMD and 18 asymptomatic controls). TMD diagnosis was established according to the Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs (DC/TMD). Swallowing function was screened using the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10), and tongue strength was assessed using the Pro-Fono Lip and Tongue Pressure (PLTP) Biofeedback device. The sample had a

The advancement of tissue engineering and the development of novel biomaterials have opened new possibilities for the effective treatment of patients with edentulism and other dental deficiencies, as well as for the prosthetic reconstruction and functional rehabilitation of the stomatognathic system. Bone substitute materials are now widely used in orthopedics, reconstructive surgery, and dentistry to support the regeneration of bone tissue lost due to trauma, inflammation, or tooth extraction. However, surgical procedures within the oral cavity inherently carry a risk of postoperative infecti

Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) is a focal dystonia characterized by contractions of the masticatory, lingual, and other muscles of the stomatognathic system. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to elucidate the impact and safety of botulinum toxin in OMD. The eligibility criteria were full-length original articles that provided data evaluating the efficacy and adverse effects of onabotulinumtoxinA injections in patients with OMD. PubMed and Embase were searched for articles published before 31 May 2023. We analyzed cases that showed a favorable response (>0% improvement), moderate

Extraneous activities of either the mouth, tongue or the jaw comprise the oral parafunctional habits of the stomatognathic system. This denominated habit is expressed through bruxism, digit sucking, nail biting to name a few, have led to hypothesizing the possible relationship of evolution of occluso-facial abnormalities such as malocclusion thereby hindering the conventional developmental process. Hence, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence and the possible relationship of parafunctional oral habits with the types of malocclusions among 12-16 years old females in Jeddah, Saudi

Although the etiopathophysiology of internal temporomandibular joint internal disorders (TMJ ID) is still unknown, it has been suggested that head and body posture could be related to its initial onset, development and perpetuation. The purpose of the present study was to observe the relationship between cervical spine X-ray abnormalities and TMJ ID. This investigation evaluated 30 subjects with internal TMJ disorder symptoms (test group) and 20 healthy subjects (control group). Subjects were submitted to clinical and radiographic evaluation. Clinical evaluation comprised anamnesis and stomato

PURPOSE: Missing posterior teeth can decrease masticatory function and cause horizontal mastication deviation, i.e., mastication predominance. Mastication predominance may lead to abnormal tooth attrition and temporomandibular disorders. This study evaluated masticatory performance and mastication predominance in patients with missing posterior teeth to investigate effects of missing posterior teeth on masticatory performance and mastication predominance.
METHODS: Thirty volunteers with normal dentition (control group), 30 patients with unilateral missing posterior teeth (unilateral group), a

The purpose of this thesis was to study an inherited disposition, systemic joint laxity, in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. The importance of systemic joint laxity for TMJ dysfunction compared with other supposed etiological factors, such as bruxism and jaw trauma, was analysed in TMJ patients and in non-patient groups. Collagen distribution and mitral valve function were investigated in hypermobile TMJ patients and normal controls. General joint mobility was assessed in 360 participants. Comparing 74 female craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) patients with 73 controls

INTRODUCTION: Recently, some published studies show there is a multifactorial origin for Temporomandibular Disorders, but the dental occlusion's contribution to the development of Temporomandibular Disorders, and how it may influence the adaptive capacity of the Stomatognathic system, it's still unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between the Occlusion Time and Temporomandibular Disorders.
METHODS: A total of 54 patients were enrolled in the study (24 males and 30 females, mean age 27.94 ± 8.21 years). The TMD group (8 males and 10 females) consisted of subjects who

INTRODUCTION: The influence of the neuromuscular system on the cervical region and mastication is directly associated with mandibular movements and neck posture. Normal occlusal homeostasis depends on complex sensory feedback mechanisms of the periodontal ligament, temporomandibular joint and other structures of the stomatognathic system. This feedback serves as a regulatory mechanism that helps determine the force and nature of muscle contractions. Alterations in the muscles of mastication, neck muscles, and occlusal characteristics constitute causal factors of imbalances in the postural musc
