BACKGROUND: The proportion of individuals above retirement age is expanding and consequently there is increased demand for ophthalmic surgery, including strabismus. In 2001 we published a pilot study reviewing all strabismus operations performed on patients aged 60 and over between 1992 and 1999. PURPOSE: Many have observed what appears to be declining interest on the part of ophthalmology graduates in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (PO&S) as a career. Four questions might address this concern: (1) Has there been a decline in the number of fellowship positions filled in the period 2000 to 2005? (2) Why do graduates choose other career paths? PURPOSE: This paper presents results of an analysis on patients operated on for strabismus in order to evaluate frequency and clinical characteristics of corneal alterations. In our experience, this kind of complication occurs more frequently after reoperation and/or after surgery for esotropia in sixth nerve palsy using transposition procedures.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made of 655 consecutive patients operated on for strabismus on the recti muscles with a limbal approach from January 2001 to July 2003 (30 months).

BACKGROUND: Vertical strabismus can be modulated by the viewing distance. We report on 19 patients with this disorder.
METHODS: The following squint angles were measured by the alternate prism and cover test at a viewing distance of 5 m. At 0.3 m, measurements were taken with and without an addition of 3.0 D to the corrected refraction. Cases of a dissociated vertical deviation were excluded. Fifteen patients underwent surgery. AIM: At a follow-up clinic for infants of opiate-dependent mothers it was noted that more infants than expected developed strabismus. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of strabismus and the need for active strabismus surveillance in this population.

To examine the link between binocular vision and binocular coordination of saccades we studied subjects with convergent strabismus since childhood with mild or no amblyopia: three subjects had small squint (< 10 prism D) and preserved peripheral binocular visual function with gross stereopsis; four subjects had larger squint (18-35 prism D) and no detectable stereopsis. A standard paradigm was used to elicit horizontal saccades; binocular recordings were made with the IRIS device. For subjects with small strabismus, saccades were disconjugate (unequal between the two eyes) typically by 1 deg.

Six patients were operated on for large subconjunctival cysts that developed up to 35 years after strabismus surgery.
