BACKGROUND: Executive dysfunction is common in geriatric depression and persists after improvement of depressive symptoms. This study examined the relationship of executive impairment to the course of depressive symptoms among elderly patients with major depression.
METHODS: A total of 112 nondemented elderly patients with major depression participated in an 8-week citalopram trial at a target daily dose of 40 mg. Executive functions were assessed with the initiation/perseveration subscale of the Dementia Rating Scale and the Stroop Color-Word test. Medical burden was rated with the Cumulativ

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative life events (NLEs) are associated with major depression (MDD).
PURPOSE: To determine whether ACEs affect all features of mild MDD, including suicidal tendencies, brooding, neuroticism, insomnia, cognitive deficits, severity of depression and anxiety, and cognitive deficits, and whether NLEs mediate these effects.
SAMPLE OF THE STUDY AND METHODS: This study examines a cohort of 118 academic students, namely 74 students who satisfied the DSM-5-TR criteria for MDD and 44 normal control students. We assessed bro

BACKGROUND: Low heart rate variability (HRV), a marker of cardiac autonomic dysfunction, has been associated with major risk factors of cognitive impairment. Yet, the direct association of HRV with cognitive function remains relatively unexplored, particularly in midlife.
METHODS: In 2005, 2 measures of short-term HRV, the SD of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) and the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), were calculated for participants of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study, and then categorized into quartiles. Five years later, 3 cognitive tests were

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to compare disease severity and cognitive performance between Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with good and poor sleep quality. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included 69 patients with PD. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Participants were classified as having good sleep quality (PSQI ≤ 5; n = 32) or poor sleep quality (PSQI > 5; n = 37). Disease severity was evaluated using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and Modified Hoehn and Yahr Scale (mH&Y). Global cognition, execu

AIM: To assess whether arrhythmias may be corrected with the anxiolytic Adaptol in subjects with anxiety disorders.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: On the basis of the data of psychological and mental testing (Stroop test) and the results of Holter monitoring, the authors selected among 59 patients with non-coronarogenic ventricular arrhythmias (VA) and an inadequate response to antiarrhythmic therapy 21 patients with manifest anxiety disorders, in whom a psychogenic factor had played a significant role in the genesis of VA, which served as an indication for Adaptol use. Reexaminations were made 30 day

Both synesthetes and non-synesthetes commonly report orthography-based letter-color associations (e.g., B is blue). This study examined whether reading processes can confound results on the synesthesia Stroop by comparing 18 synesthetes and 18 non-synesthetes using full color words and their initial letters. Critically, only stimuli showing non-orthographic synesthetic colors were selected for each synesthete (e.g., R synesthetically perceived as yellow) and congruency was based on orthography (e.g., R in red) and not on synesthetes' consistently reported color experiences. Both groups showed

The Stroop effect is a classical, well-known behavioral phenomenon in humans that refers to robust interference between language and color information. It remains unclear, however, when the interference occurs and how it is resolved in the brain. Here we show that the Stroop effect occurs during perception of color-word stimuli and involves a cross-hemispheric, excitatory-inhibitory loop functionally connecting the lateral prefrontal cortex and cerebellum. Participants performed a Stroop task and a non-verbal control task (which we term the Swimmy task), and made a response vocally or manually

While numerical skills are increasingly important in modern life, few interventions have been developed to support those with numeracy skills difficulties. Previous studies have demonstrated that applying transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) can improve numerical skills. However, tDCS interventions designed to induce lasting changes typically involve reapplying brain-stimulation over several days. Repeated tDCS application can increase the risks associated with the procedure, as well as restricts the transferability of the method to a wider population, particularly those who may expe

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) can significantly impair quality of life and is associated with a relatively poor long-term prognosis. Anxiety disorders are often associated with hyper-responsiveness to threat, perhaps coupled with impaired executive functioning. However, GAD, particularly adolescent GAD, has been the focus of little functional neuroimaging work compared to other anxiety disorders. Here, we examine the neural association of adolescent GAD with responsiveness to threat and response control.
METHODS: The study involved 35 adolescents with GAD and 34 healthy compa

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive dysfunction is a core feature of major depressive disorder (MDD). Although both repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and vortioxetine have demonstrated procognitive effects, direct comparative evidence remains limited. This study compared the clinical and cognitive outcomes of rTMS and vortioxetine in patients with MDD.
METHODS: In this 8-week naturalistic study, 40 patients with MDD received either rTMS (n = 25) or vortioxetine (n = 15). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). Cognitive performance was

BACKGROUND: Whether high blood pressure has a causal effect on cognitive function as early as middle age is unclear. We investigated whether high blood pressure (BP) causally impairs cognitive function at midlife using Mendelian Randomization (MR).
METHODS: We applied a two-sample MR approach to investigate the causal relationship between BP and midlife cognitive performance measured by the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), and Stroop Interference test. We used a total of 109 genetic polymorphisms with established associations with BP as instrum

The progression of bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by recurrent episodes of depression, mania, and hypomania, thus affecting the daily functionality of individuals. Previous studies have shown that a large proportion of patients diagnosed with BD who are in clinical remission experience significant functional disorders. The present study aimed to investigate the relationships between cognitive impairment and serum progesterone, allopregnanolone and BDNF levels in male bipolar disorder patients who are in the euthymic period. Our study included 41 euthymic male patients with bipolar diso

BACKGROUND: Cognitive processes associated with frontal lobe functioning are often termed "executive functions." Two such processes are initiation and inhibition or the starting and stopping of responses. It has recently been claimed dysfunction of executive abilities can be explained by a single measure of fluid intelligence. Here, we test this claim, specifically for the executive abilities of response initiation and inhibition, across the healthy lifespan.
METHOD: In a cohort of 336 healthy adults (18-89 years), initiation and inhibition were assessed with the Hayling test, Stroop test, an

BACKGROUND: Recent findings suggest that transcranial direct current stimulation of the primary motor cortex may ameliorate freezing of gait. However, the effects of multitarget simultaneous stimulation of motor and cognitive networks are mostly unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of multitarget transcranial direct current stimulation of the primary motor cortex and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on freezing of gait and related outcomes.
METHODS: Twenty patients with Parkinson's disease and freezing of gait received 20 minutes of transcranial direct current s

INTRODUCTION: In a double-blind randomized crossover trial, we previously established that bilateral deep brain stimulation of the anteromedial globus pallidus internus (GPiam-DBS) is effective in significantly reducing tic severity in patients with refractory Tourette syndrome (TS). Here, we report the effects of bilateral GPiam-DBS on cognitive function in 11 of the 13 patients who had participated in our double-blind cross-over trial of GPi-DBS.
METHODS: Patients were assessed at baseline (4 weeks prior to surgery) and at the end of each of the three-month blinded periods, with stimulation

BACKGROUND: Sensory deficits can result in limitations regarding how well neuropsychological test findings can be interpreted. Only a few studies have investigated the influence of vision alteration on neuropsychological tests. In 2012 the Czech Republic experienced mass methanol poisoning. Methanol metabolites cause histotoxic hypoxia to the optic nerve.
OBJECTIVE: In the current study, the effect of the toxic damage on the parts of the visual pathway on visual and non-visual neuropsychological measures was investigated using electrophysiological methods (visual evoked potential (VEP) and op
