Using Functional Connectivity Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Measure Brain Connectivity in Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: The use of functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (fcMRI) in research involving preterm infants is relatively new, and its feasibility in this population is not fully established. However, fcMRI images reveal functional neural connections that may be useful in establishing the mechanisms of neuroprotective interventions in preterm infants. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of using fcMRI to measure differences in functional neural connections in nursing intervention studies. METHODS: A pilot study was conducted as part of a longitudinal

Suckling.

Suckling is the only behavior that is common among mammals. In newborn albino rats it is originally elicited by amniotic fluid deposited by the mother during parturition. Subsequent suckling is stimulated by saliva deposited on the nipples by the infant rats. Internal controls over the volume of milk suckled do not appear until infant rats are about 2 weeks of age at which time gastric distension, milk, systemic dehydration, and intestinal hormone cholecystokinin suppress milk intake derived through suckling. The development of controls over suckling appetite appears to parallel that of consum

The evolutionary origin of human kissing.

A kiss has been a signal of special affection across continents and cultures for millennia. Between times and peoples, social norms invariably prescribe kissing to specific affiliations and contexts, implying deeper biological bases. Why the protruding of the lips and slight suction when touching another? Capuchin monkeys stick their fingers in their friends' eyes as sign of affection, why have humans developed kissing? Here I briefly review proposed hypotheses for the evolution of human kissing. Great ape social behavior suggests that kissing is likely the conserved final mouth-contact stage

Prevalence and Determinants of Malocclusion among Preschool Children in Maiduguri.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion is an abnormality of teeth alignment from interactions of hereditary and environmental factors, associated with stimuli present at the period of formation and development of the face and oral tissues. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and determinants of malocclusion among preschool children in Maiduguri, Borno State. METHODS: This study involved 239 pre-school children selected by systematic random sampling. The independent variables were 'presence / absence of sucking habits', 'type of sucking habit', 'molar relationship' and 'nutritional status. The dependen

Association between occlusal features and masticatory function in Hong Kong preschool children: a survey with one-year longitudinal follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Mastication is important for breaking down food, aiding swallowing and nutrients absorption, and is therefore fundamental to a child's development. Studies have shown poor masticatory function to be associated with younger age and presence of caries. However, studies of the association between masticatory function and malocclusion yielded contradictory results. The aim of this study is therefore to investigate the association between three-dimensional occlusal features with masticatory function, among preschool children in Hong Kong. METHODS: Self-administered questionnaires on ma

ABM Clinical Protocol #17: Guidelines for Breastfeeding Infants with Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate, or Cleft Lip and Palate-Revised 2019.

A central goal of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine is the development of clinical protocols for managing common medical problems that may impact breastfeeding success. These protocols serve only as guidelines for the care of breastfeeding mothers and infants and do not delineate an exclusive course of treatment or serve as standards of medical care. Variations in treatment may be appropriate according to the needs of an individual patient.

Effect of non-nutritive sucking and sucrose alone and in combination for repeated procedural pain in preterm infants: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Sucrose combined with non-nutritive sucking provided better pain relief than sucrose or non-nutritive sucking alone in a single painful procedure. However, whether the combination of non-nutritive sucking with sucrose could obtain a significant difference in analgesic effect of the repeated procedural pain than any single intervention has not been established. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of non-nutritive sucking and sucrose alone and in combination of repeated procedural pain in preterm infants. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: A level III neonatal intensive ca

Evidence of improved milk intake after frenotomy: a case report.

Ankyloglossia (tongue tie) is a well-recognized cause of breastfeeding difficulties and, if untreated, can cause maternal nipple pain and trauma, ineffective feeding, and poor infant weight gain. In some cases, this condition will result in a downregulation of the maternal milk supply. Milk-production measurements (24-hour) for a breastfeeding infant with ankyloglossia revealed the ineffective feeding of the infant (78 mL/24 hours), and a low milk supply (350 mL/24 hours) was diagnosed. Appropriate management increased milk supply (1254 mL/24 hours) but not infant milk intake (190 mL/24 hours)

Improving breastfeeding outcomes: the impact of tongue-tie.

A tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is defined as a lingual frenulum that is short, tight and restricts normal tongue movement. The tongue-tied newborn baby then has a mechanical difficulty attaching to his mum's breast and maintaining attachment to feed effectively. In the hands of skilled carers, this mechanical problem can be resolved by releasing the frenulum (frenulotomy) and the baby's access to his/her mother's breast milk be preserved. Published research on this subject has undergone justifiable criticism. Robust methodology was lacking in earlier studies. An overview of the course of researc

Effectiveness of cheek and jaw support to improve feeding performance of preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the effects of cheek and jaw support on the feeding ability of inefficient feeders born prematurely. METHOD: Twenty preterm infants served as their own controls. Each infant received either intervention (feeding with oral support) or control (feeding without oral support) for 2 consecutive feedings per day on 2 consecutive days. RESULTS: Infants displayed a greater intake rate during the intervention feedings, both during the first 5 min (p = .046) and throughout the entire feeding (p = .023). The percentage of leakage during the first 5-min feeding was smaller in the

[Infectious skin disease in the newborn (author's transl)].

The most important infectious skin diseases of the newbornperiod are discussed in a short survey. Those skin alterations which can already be observed immediately after birth are especially emphasized. The search for skin infections has to be a routine measure in the care of the newborn, because even the smallest pyoderms can lead to septic complications, and non-infected newborn must be protected through the quarantining and treatment of those newborns with the infection. Frequent occurrence of pyoderms should be taken as a reason for examining the hygienic measures in the delivery room, nurs

Neuropeptide Y2 receptor (NPY2R) expression in saliva predicts feeding immaturity in the premature neonate.

BACKGROUND: The current practice in newborn medicine is to subjectively assess when a premature infant is ready to feed by mouth. When the assessment is inaccurate, the resulting feeding morbidities may be significant, resulting in long-term health consequences and millions of health care dollars annually. We hypothesized that the developmental maturation of hypothalamic regulation of feeding behavior is a predictor of successful oral feeding in the premature infant. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed the gene expression of neuropeptide Y2 receptor (NPY2R), a known hypothalamic regulator of

Prenatal alcohol exposure: recent work on behavioral dysfunctions in pre-weanling rats.

This article reviews recent data collected in our laboratory examining the behavioral effects of prenatal alcohol exposure in pre-weanling rats. The behavioral alterations which are discussed include suckling dysfunctions, overactivity, and early learning deficits. Similar behavioral dysfunctions have also been reported in children exposed to alcohol during prenatal development. These similarities are discussed as well as possible insights that might be gained from animal models of fetal alcohol effects.

Non-organic failure to thrive: a developmental perspective.

Like other segments of the child's development, eating behavior follows a sequential pattern. To understand the infant's or child's feeding problems which can lead to failure to thrive or dwarfism we propose that a child's progression be studied through three stages of development: homeostasis, attachment and separation-individuation. Specific feeding problems can arise at each of these stages of development and consequently impede the child's weight gain. During the period of homeostasis the infant learns to regulate himself, to suck, to swallow and to time the onset and termination of feedin

A field-collected intersex Aedes albopictus with female-like blood-feeding and a male genotype.

Sexual dimorphism in Aedes albopictus is typically strict, with blood-feeding restricted to females. Here, we report a rare field-collected intersex Ae. albopictus captured by human-landing catch in Guangzhou, China. Morphological examination revealed a structurally intact piercing-sucking proboscis, intermediate antennal whorled setae, and male-type claspers, although maxillary palp asymmetry and other cephalic traits could not be conclusively assigned to female morphology due to tissue condition. Blood was visible in the abdomen at the time of capture; however, molecular identification of th

Oral habits--part 2: beyond nutritive and non-nutritive sucking.

In addition to sucking habits, a range of other habits have been associated with short- and long-term dental and orthodontic problems. These habits include tongue thrusting and atypical swallowing, lip sucking, oral self-mutilation, mouth breathing, and bruxism. Although the association between form and function continues to be controversial, if habits are of sufficient duration they may lead to dental malocclusion and impede successful management. Oral self-injury and bruxism can lead to significant problems, such as soft tissue trauma and infection. Accurate history taking and examination ar

Development of swallowing and feeding: prenatal through first year of life.

The development of feeding and swallowing involves a highly complex set of interactions that begin in embryologic and fetal periods and continue through infancy and early childhood. This article will focus on swallowing and feeding development in infants who are developing normally with a review of some aspects of prenatal development that provide a basis for in utero sucking and swallowing. Non-nutritive sucking in healthy preterm infants, nipple feeding in preterm and term infants, and selected processes of continued development of oral skills for feeding throughout the first year of life wi

Early social isolation alters behavioral and physiological responses to an endotoxin challenge in piglets.

Psychosocial stress in the form of maternal deprivation and social isolation during early postnatal life induces persistent alterations in behavioral and physiological mechanisms of adaptation. One consequence may be an increased susceptibility to diseases in later life. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate in domestic piglets the effects of a repeated social isolation (2 h daily from day 3 to day 11 of age) on behavioral, endocrine and immune responses to an endotoxin challenge with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) 1 day or 45 days after the isolation period. Peripheral LPS admi
