Long-Term Outcomes and Course of Compensatory Sweating after Endoscopic Sympathicotomy.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic thoracic sympathicotomy is an effective approach to the treatment of idiopathic localized hyperhidrosis, and compensatory sweating is the main reason for patient dissatisfaction. Our study discusses both the long-term outcomes of sympathicotomy and the course of compensatory sweating. METHODS: Patients with palmar and/or axillary hyperhidrosis who were operated by the same surgical team between January 2008 and December 2014 were included in the study. After at least 5 years (60 months) from operation, patients were questioned about their treatment outcomes by using an

Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome: Differential diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment concepts.

Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome (CS/CISS) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by hyperthermia, camptodactyly, feeding and respiratory difficulties often leading to sudden death in the neonatal period. The affected individuals who survived the first critical years of life, develop cold-induced sweating and scoliosis in early childhood. The disease is caused by variants in the CRLF1 or in the CLCF1 gene. Both proteins form a heterodimeric complex that acts on cells expressing the ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor (CNTFR). CS/CISS belongs to the family of "CNTFR-related dis

Non-menopausal endocrine and non-endocrine causes of flushing and sweating.

Hot flushes and generalised sweating are relatively common presenting complaints, with hypogonadism an important differential diagnosis in both sexes and menopause being the most typical cause in females of climacteric age. However, a variety of other conditions do need to be carefully considered in respect of eugonadal individuals and also for those hypogonadal ones where properly dosed sex steroid replacement has failed to control flushing and sweating, or where the presentation is atypical. Alternative aetiologies may be immediately obvious from the history and physical examination, but mor

Uncontrolled hypertension, palpitation and sweating in young female - A rare cause.

Extra-adrenal /retroperitoneal paraganglioma is a rare cause of hypertension in young with increased incidence of metastasis as compared to adrenal pheochromocytoma. We present a case of a young female with history of headache, nausea/vomiting, palpitations, uncontrolled hypertension, heat intolerance and diaphoresis. The 24-hour urine catecholamine levels were elevated. Clinical diagnosis of pheochromocytoma was made and further evaluation with Computed Tomography (CT) scan of the adrenals revealed extradrenal para-aortic retroperitoneal mass in keeping with paraganglioma. Case report of excessive hand sweating that alters blood sugar measurements.

We present a clinical case that we did not find described in literature and yet is quite common in primary care. The patient described is female with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus treated with insulin and poor clinical response according to glycated haemoglobin measurements. In addition to the main diagnosis, she also shows excessive sweating in palms and feet, which explains why her blood sugar levels were wrong. This also led to treatment adjustments that were carried out with disregard to her true plasma glucose concentration. To conclude, this case report highlights the importance of tr

Child who presented with hematohidrosis (sweating blood) with oppositional defiant disorder.

Hematohidrosis is a very rare condition of sweating blood. A child's case who presented to us with hematohidrosis is reported. There are only few reports in the literature. A 10-year-old boy presented to our hospital with a history of repeated episodes of oozing of blood from navel, eyes, ear lobules, and nose. During the examination, it disappeared as soon as it was mopped leaving behind no sign of trauma only to reappear within a few seconds. Bleeding time, clotting time, and prothrombin time were normal. Patient was diagnosed with hematohidrosis and oppositional defiant disorder clinically.

[Botulinum toxin for treatment of gustatory sweating. A prospective randomized study].

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin A has meanwhile become a proven method for treatment of gustatory sweating (focal hyperhidrosis, Frey's syndrome). Clear-cut recommendations regarding dosage of botulinum toxin A in Frey's syndrome are currently not available. The aim of this prospective randomized study therefore was to investigate botulinum toxin A with respect to its efficacy in Frey's syndrome, the ideal dose yielding maximal duration of the effect, and patient contentedness as well as unwanted side effects in patients of the Clinic of OMF Surgery at the Ruhr-University of Bochum. Sweat conductivity test - can it be a cheaper alternative to sweat chloride analysis for diagnosis of cystic fibrosis in low resource setting?

Background & objectives Availability of sweat chloride analysis, the gold standard test for diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) faces significant challenges in India. This study aimed to compare sweat conductivity using Sweat-Chek™ Sweat Analyzer against sweat chloride analysis using the 926 Sherwood chloride analyser and assess if sweat conductivity test can guide CF diagnosis in resource-poor settings. Methods In this retrospective study sweat chloride analysis and sweat conductivity were simultaneously performed on samples collected via Macroduct® system from patients referred for sweat testi

Association of primary focal hyperhidrosis with anxiety induced by sweating: A cross-sectional study of Japanese university students focusing on the severity of hyperhidrosis and site of sweating.

Hyperhidrosis significantly reduces patients' quality of life, with many reporting feeling highly anxious. However, the relationship between hyperhidrosis and anxiety induced by sweating has not been examined in detail. The current study examined the relationship between: (1) the presence of hyperhidrosis symptoms, (2) hyperhidrosis severity, and (3) the sites of the most sweating and anxiety induced by sweating. A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted among university students, and 1080 consenting participants (600 males and 480 females; mean age, 18.8 years) were included in the ana

Clinical Question: How to Approach a Patient Presenting With Sweating and Flushing.

Sweating and flushing are normal physiological processes, but may be the presenting feature of endocrine disease and are a frequent reason for referral from primary care. The most common endocrinopathies causing sweating include excursions of blood glucose, hypogonadism and thyroid dysfunction. Rarer pathologies include phaeochromocytoma or paraganglioma (PPGL), neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), and medullary thyroid carcinoma, which present with a constellation of symptoms that require a clinical index of suspicion. The pre-test probability of sweating being caused by rare endocrinopathies is si

Reduced unilateral sweating caused by varicella zoster virus infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster is an infectious skin disease caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (VZV), which has been latent in the posterior root ganglia of the spinal cord or cranial ganglia for an extended period. Neurological complications caused by herpes zoster include aseptic meningitis, white matter disease, peripheral motor neuropathy, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. However, reduced unilateral sweating caused by the VZV is very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports the case of a 34-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with sore throat, dizziness, and

Comparative proteomics reveals biochemical changes in Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge during sweating processing.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is a bulk medicinal material used in traditional Chinese medicine, that can cure cardiovascular diseases, neurasthenia, and other conditions. Sweating is a frequently used method of processing S. miltiorrhiza for medical applications. We previously demonstrated changes to the metabolic profile of linoleic acid, glyoxylate, and dicarboxylate after Sweating. However, this alteration has not been explained at the molecular level. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fresh roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge were treated by the Sweating processing, and t

Comparison of T2 and T3 sympathectomy for compensatory sweating on palmar hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: An otherwise successfully performed endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) to treat palmar hyperhidrosis (PH) often has a serious side effect: compensatory sweating (CS). This side effect occurs in other parts of the body to a disturbing extent. The objective of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between the level of ETS performed on patients with PH, and the occurrence and severity of postoperational CS. METHODS: Between January 2014 and January 2015, ETS procedures were performed on 25 randomly selected consecutive subjects (group A) at T2 level, and on
