Acute Physical Stress Preconditions the Heart Against Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury Through Activation of Sympathetic Nervous System.

BACKGROUND: Stress is defined as a complicated state that related to homeostasis disturbances, over-activity of the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis responses. Cardiac preconditioning reduces myocardial damages. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess the cardioprotective effects of acute physical stress against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury through the activation of the sympathetic nervous system. METHODS: Thirty-two male Wistar rats were divided into four groups; (1) IR (n = 8): rats underwent I/R, (2) Acute stress (St+IR) (n = 8): physical stress

Activation of the sympathetic nervous system mediates hypophagic and anxiety-like effects of CB₁ receptor blockade.

Complex interactions between periphery and the brain regulate food intake in mammals. Cannabinoid type-1 (CB1) receptor antagonists are potent hypophagic agents, but the sites where this acute action is exerted and the underlying mechanisms are not fully elucidated. To dissect the mechanisms underlying the hypophagic effect of CB1 receptor blockade, we combined the acute injection of the CB1 receptor antagonist rimonabant with the use of conditional CB1-knockout mice, as well as with pharmacological modulation of different central and peripheral circuits. Fasting/refeeding experiments revealed

Physical (in)activity-dependent alterations at the rostral ventrolateral medulla: influence on sympathetic nervous system regulation.

A sedentary lifestyle is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and rates of inactivity and cardiovascular disease are highly prevalent in our society. Cardiovascular disease is often associated with overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, which has both direct and indirect effects on multiple organ systems. Although it has been known for some time that exercise positively affects the brain in terms of memory and cognition, only recently have changes in how the brain regulates the cardiovascular system been examined in terms of physical activity and inactivity. This brief revi

Pituitary-adrenal and sympathetic nervous system responses to stress in women remitted from recurrent major depression.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the changes in hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) function after remission of depression. We characterized these systems at baseline and in response to a psychosocial stressor in a cohort of women remitted from recurrent major depression as well as in never-depressed healthy female controls. METHODS: Baseline HPA function was measured via saliva cortisol sampling at 8 AM and 4 PM over 7 days as well as quantification of urinary overnight cortisol secretion. The HPA system response to a psychosocial stressor was assess

[24-hour ambulatory monitoring of arterial blood pressure and the sympathetic nervous system in hypertensive smokers].

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that heavy smoking may interfere with the variation in ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) and sympathetic nervous system in essential hypertension. METHODS: We compared the office and 24-hour ABP of 48 untreated hypertensive smokers (> 20 cigarettes daily) with 90 non-smoking hypertensives matched for age, sex and body mass index. ABP was recorded using fully automatic SpaceLabs 90,207 units set to take a measurement every 15 minutes during the day (7.00 a.m.-10.00 p.m.) and every 20 minutes during the night (10.00 p.m.-7.00 a.m.). [The effect of etilefrine and dihydroergotamine on sympathetic nervous system activity when standing up (author's transl)].

Systolic blood pressure, heart rate and concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine as well as plasma dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) were measured in 22 subjects in recumbency and on standing up. Six subjects each had previously been given intravenously dihydroergotamine (0.5 mg) or etilefrine (0.25 mg/min) or a placebo. It was demonstrated that orthostasis leads to an increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system and the adrenal system. After administration of dihydroergotamine there was a diminished reaction of the sympathetic nervous system with an increase of venous to

The Influence of the Sympathetic Nervous System on Cardiometabolic Health in Response to Weight Gain or Weight Loss.

Alterations in sympathetic nervous activity are evident in response to changes in body weight. Sympathetic nervous activity and sympathetic responses to weight change are regionalized, with alterations in end organ function dependent on the changes occurring in the brain regulatory pathways invoked and in the effector organs engaged. The obesity-induced activation of the sympathetic nervous system likely contributes to the initiation and worsening of cardiometabolic risk factors, including elevated blood pressure, cardiac dysfunction, dyslipidaemia, increased fasting blood glucose, insulin res

From early adversities to immune activation in psychiatric disorders: the role of the sympathetic nervous system.

Increased peripheral levels of cytokines and central microglial activation have been reported in patients with psychiatric disorders. The degree of both innate and adaptive immune activation is also associated with worse clinical outcomes and poor treatment response in these patients. Understanding the possible causes and mechanisms leading to this immune activation is therefore an important and necessary step for the development of novel and more effective treatment strategies for these patients. In this work, we review the evidence of literature pointing to childhood trauma as one of the mai

Meal-induced activation of the sympathetic nervous system and its cardiovascular and thermogenic effects in man.

The postprandial activation of the peripheral sympathetic nervous system is crucial to maintain cardiovascular homeostasis. A contribution of postprandial sympathetic activation to the thermic effect of food is not always evident and depends on the size and composition of the meal, with carbohydrates having the clearest effect. Signals related to food intake from various origins (e.g. gut, hepatoportal area, baroreceptors) are integrated in the brain and result in increased peripheral sympathetic outflow. It is of interest to further explore the role of diet composition in the level of sympath

Effects of clonidine on diuretic response in ascitic patients with cirrhosis and activation of sympathetic nervous system.

The effects of the addition of clonidine to diuretics on the mobilization of ascites in the short term (diuretic response and requirement of diuretics) and the long term (readmissions for tense ascites and requirement of diuretics) were examined in patients with cirrhosis and with increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity. We also studied neurohormonal, hemodynamic effects and side effects of clonidine and diuretics. Patients were randomized to receive placebo (group 1, n = 32) or clonidine (0.075 mg) twice daily (group 2, n = 32) for 3 months. After 8 days and for 10 days duration,

The role of the sympathetic nervous system in linking obesity with hypertension in white versus black Americans.

Several previous studies confirmed that obesity is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension. A large number of clinical studies considered the role of the sympathetic nervous system in linking obesity with hypertension, and there is substantial evidence that human obesity is characterized by defects in sympathetic cardiovascular control. The association of obesity with hypertension has been well documented in most racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Ethnicity may be an important factor to consider since sympathetic nervous system activity

[The influence of single moderate exercise on the sympathetic nervous system activity in patients with essential hypertension].

UNLABELLED: Sympathetic nervous system may play an important role in development and maintenance of hypertension. Its activity can be assessed by plasma levels of catecholamines, neuropeptide Y (NPY) and adrenergic receptor density. Hypertensive subjects may be more prone to reveal overactivity of sympathetic nervous system, for instance as a result of physical stress. The aim of the study was to determine the activity of sympathetic nervous system in young patients with newly recognized, untreated mild hypertension. INVESTIGATED GROUPS AND METHODS: The study was carried out in 22 patients (a

Contribution of the sympathetic nervous system to hypertensive response to insulin excess in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Our previous studies demonstrate that chronic insulin administration exacerbates hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that the pressor effect of insulin in SHR is medicated by sympathetic nervous system overactivity. Male SHR (7 weeks old) were given daily subcutaneous injection of insulin or vehicle for 3 days, after which each rat received an intravenous infusion of the peripheral ganglionic blocker hexamethonium. Two days later, in a second experiment, the infusion protocol was repeated with the alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist cl

The sympathetic nervous system contributes to capsaicin-evoked mechanical allodynia but not pinprick hyperalgesia in humans.

The contribution of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) to pain, mechanical allodynia (MA), and hyperalgesia in humans is controversial. A clearer understanding is crucial to guide therapeutic use of sympatholytic surgery, blocks, and drug treatments. In rats, capsaicin-evoked MA, and to some extent, pinprick hyperalgesia (PPH), can be blocked with alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists. In this study, we examined the contribution of the SNS to MA and PPH in normal human subjects by blocking alpha-adrenoreceptors with intravenous phentolamine. In a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover stud

[Physiological mechanisms of cardiovascular adaptation to orthostatism. Role of the sympathetic nervous system and pharmacological implications].

The main physiological adaptative systems occurring during orthostatism are discussed. The nervous mechanisms and especially baroreceptor pathways allow a rapid adaptation to the new hemodynamic conditions whereas hormones (mainly vasopressin) are involved later. The role of baroreflex and cardiocirculatory mechanisms is explained by the description of adaptative mechanisms in giraffe, an animal with its brain so far above the ground. The changes in adrenoceptor receptivity and the adaptative homeostatic mechanisms of the autonomic nervous system during orthostatism in human are discussed. The

Role of vasopressin in clinical hypertension and congestive cardiac failure: interaction with the sympathetic nervous system.

The pressor action of vasopressin (AVP) in humans was investigated with the specific anti-vasopressor V1 antagonist d(CH2)5-O(Me)-Tyr-AVP. A single 0.5-mg intravenous bolus of this agent inhibited the pressor effect of AVP by about 80%. Normally hydrated humans had no blood pressure response to this dose, but this agent did prevent the blood pressure rise in response to exogenous AVP given in doses up to 200 milli-units/kg. Patients with severe hypertension, especially that associated with end-stage renal disease, tended to respond with moderate increases in blood pressure and plasma AVP after

[Experimental study on the characteristic features of sympathetic nervous system reactions in dogs with obstructive jaundice].

Possible abnormalities in the sympathetic nervous system responsible for circulatory disturbances with obstructive jaundice were investigated by determining the reactions of the heart and peripheral blood vessels using alpha.beta receptor stimulants or blockers. Mongrel dogs were randomly assigned to three groups: untreated (UT) and sham-operated (SO) controls and 3-week-old bile duct ligated (BDL). Under anesthesia with Nembutal, circulatory parameters and blood catecholamine concentration were measured. In term of alpha- and beta-adrenergic reactions, reactions in the sympathetic nervous sys

[The effects of the intracerebroventricular administration of cimetidine on hemodynamics in conscious rats: relation to the sympathetic nervous system].

Histamine H2-receptor antagonists administered into the central nervous system have been shown to increase arterial pressure (AP) in anaesthetized animals (Paakkari et al., 1982). Few studies have been reported on the effects of centrally administered cimetidine (CIM), one of the histamine H2-receptor antagonists, in conscious animals. However, the mechanism of the pressor action of histamine H2-receptor antagonists remains unclear. The present study was designed to investigate the hemodynamic effects of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) CIM and the interaction between the sympathetic nervous s
