OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence and epidemiology of congenital polydactyly and syndactyly in Hunan Province, China, 2016-2020.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the Birth Defects Surveillance System in Hunan Province, China, 2016-2020. Prevalence of birth defects (polydactyly or syndactyly) is the number of cases per 1000 births (unit: ‰). Prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by the log-binomial method. Chi-square trend tests (χ2trend) were used to determine trends in prevalence by year. Crude odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to examine the association of each de

Syndactyly is the most common congenital malformation of the hand, leading to the fusion of the digits and frequently affecting the ring and middle fingers. The incidence is 1 out of 2500 children, predominantly occurring in boys and Caucasians. Clinically, the malformation may present as a soft tissue or bony fusion, resulting in the union of the fingers characterised as complete or incomplete. This fusion may involve the phalanges but may also extend to the carpal/tarsal bones, even to the metacarpal or metatarsal level, rarely to the distal end of the forearm and lower leg. The malformation

UNLABELLED: Syndactyly is one of the most common congenital hand malformations, involving an abnormal fusion of digits and with treatment varying according to its complexity. The internet has become a primary source of information for both families and patients with congenital hand anomalies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate both the readability and quality of available web content for syndactyly, using validated instruments.
METHODS: Two independent reviewers conducted searches for "Syndactyly" using three of the largest online search engines: Bing, Google, and Yahoo. The top 10 web

Syndactyly occurs in 1 in 2,000 live births and is more common in white children. This article describes a patient with syndactyly and additional abnormalities indicating oculodentodigital dysplasia.

The results of 144 congenital syndactyly releases over a 12-year period by a single surgeon using a modified Flatt technique (dorsal hourglass flap, interdigitating zigzag flaps, and full-thickness skin grafts) are analyzed considering the association of skin grafts and web creep. The mean follow-up was 5 years. There were seven cases of graft failure, only one of which developed web creep. Web creep occurred in 4.2% of web releases. The results suggest that avoiding longitudinal straight-line scars across the web space may be an important factor in avoiding web creep when performing the modif

Diplopodia is a rare congenital disorder that has not been extensively discussed in textbooks, and case reports appear to be the main source of information. Although the exact cause of diplopodia remains unknown, the presence of extra digits as well as metatarsals and tarsals allows it to be differentiated from pedal polydactyly. Syndactyly refers to the congenital fusion of the digits. Concomitant bilateral syndactyly and diplopodia is extremely unusual, and in this report we describe a case of right diplopodia and left polydactyly combined with bilateral manual syndactyly in a 15-year-old gi

Split Hand Foot Malformation (SHFM) (cleft hand/foot, central ray deficiency) is a complex, highly variable anomaly involving the hands and/or feet. A clinical epidemiologic study of split hand/foot (central ray deficiency) of the Manitoba population identified a subset of patients who did not present with either typical or atypical split hand. Clinically, some patients presented with "mitten hand" syndactyly; the deficiency was not recognized before imaging. In this paper, we identify additional similarly affected literature cases, review existing classifications of split hand and syndactyly

On the basis of the observation of a rare case of lipomatous macrodactyly of the foot associated with syndactyly in a young child, the authors analyze the anatomopathologic and therapeutic aspects of the pathology and report the data found in the literature. This disease initially requires careful surveillance of its progression, and use of correct footwear. Surgery is indicated when deformity achieves unacceptable values, both functional and cosmetic, in early childhood.

We report a 5 9/12-year-old male with Cenani-Lenz syndactyly (CLS). He presented with three malformed digits on each hand and bilateral 2,3 partial cutaneous toe syndactyly. The expression of this presumed autosomal recessive disorder is variable and has been confused with split hand foot malformation (SHFM). Not all CLS patients show the typical 'spoon hand' configuration originally described. Affected CLS patients show a disorganized appearance of the phalanges with some degree of syndactyly/oligodactyly, in addition to metacarpal and carpal fusions. Radioulnar synostosis may be present. The treatment of complicated syndactyly has been a difficult problem because it involves not only cutaneous syndactyly but also abnormal arrangement of the finger rays. This means that this anomaly is characterized by abnormal patterns of the palmar creases. The authors prepared a template for tracing the proximal, middle, and distal palmar creases of the nonaffected hand on a clear film and used it as a mirror image to create the preoperative design, to measure the distance between the fingers, and to estimate the location and size of the skin graft intraoperatively. The authors think that th

Lobster Claw Syndrome is a type of syndactyly, where abnormalities in the hand-foot region as well as the orodental region occur. A case of a 14-year old boy with this syndrome is presented here.

A three-square-flap procedure is described for surgical treatment of minor syndactyly. The average follow-up period in 58 cases (48 patients) was 2 years 4 months. In the three-square-flap method, the interdigital space is regarded as a cube and flaps are designed on each surface of the cube (dorsal side, interdigital surface, and volar side); the flap on the dorsal side forms the basal surface of the new interdigital portion. This technique is most suitable for reconstruction of minor three-dimensional contracture syndactyly. This method does not require skin grafting; the design is uncomplic

We describe a family with autosomal dominant inheritance of anal anomalies, renal tract abnormalities, genital malformations, and syndactyly. These clinical manifestations do not clearly fall into any previously described syndrome. A mother and daughter had almost identical congenital malformations, short stature, and unusual facies. The proband was born with anal stenosis, a rectovaginal fistula, clitoral hypertrophy, a pelvic right kidney, and syndactyly of both feet. Her daughter had the same anal, clitoral, and foot anomalies, a solitary pelvic kidney, and no fistula. This family is likely

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to characterize a possible association between long QT syndrome and syndactyly.
BACKGROUND: Long QT syndrome causes syncope and sudden death from ventricular arrhythmias. Syndactyly is a developmental disorder that causes webbing of the hands and feet. Both disorders can be inherited as isolated, autosomal dominant traits, but an association between them has not been established.
METHODS: We identified three children with long QT syndrome, atrioventricular (AV) block and simple syndactyly. Phenotypic and laboratory data were obtained from families, a

39 foetal mice with genetic syndactyly were identified in utero at 17 days of gestation, and the right hindfoot extruded through the uterus. The syndactylous digits were separated by simple incisions. In one group (n = 25) digit separation was maintained during wound healing by the interdigital application of a silver microclip. Digit separation was also assessed in a second group of newborn mice less than 24 hours old (juxtanatal population, n = 24). Two foetuses (5%) and six newborns (25%) developed digital necrosis following microclip application. In the remaining microclipped animals (23 i

Repair of complete syndactyly by a combination of tissue expansion and composite grafts from the glabrous non-weight bearing areas of the foot has been performed on three syndactylies in two patients. The commissure and the lateral areas of the proximal and middle phalanges were covered with expanded skin and the separated fingertips were covered with composite grafts. Without using an ordinary skin graft, this method can provide aesthetically excellent results with good skin colour and texture.

Keloid formation on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet is rare. A keloid developed 2 months after release of simple syndactyly in a young black child. The process of keloid formation is not completely understood, and surgical correction is not effective.
