Application of Graphite Tailings in Concrete Manufacturing: A Review.

Large-scale mining of graphite, a crucial strategic mineral, generates substantial amounts of graphite tailings (GT). The stockpiling of this solid waste occupies vast land resources and poses persistent environmental risks due to potential heavy metal leaching. Repurposing GT into construction materials presents a promising solution, with its use as a partial replacement for fine aggregates in cementitious composites being one of the most effective methods. This review systematically consolidates current research on graphite tailings cement mortar (GTCM) and graphite tailings concrete (GTC).

There is No "Axillary Tail": Rethinking the Assumption of James Spence.

Widely quoted, "the axillary tail of Spence" refers to a contiguous extension of adipose angling superolaterally from the primary breast into the axilla. Described anecdotally in 1871, the "tail of Spence" has been considered important to the fields of general surgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and anatomy ever since. Despite the ubiquitous presence of the concept in literature, clinical discussions, and educational settings, we argue against the very existence of Spence's "tail." While pinch-testing and topographically mapping 316 consecutive patients in preparation for breast and gynecomast

Unveiling the tale of the tail: an illustration of spinal dysraphisms.

Spinal dysraphism is an umbrella term describing herniation of meninges or neural elements through defective neural arch. They can be broadly categorized into open and closed types. MRI is the investigation of choice to study neural abnormalities and to assess the severity of hydrocephalus and Chiari malformation. Knowledge of the embryology of these disorders is valuable in correctly identifying the type of dysraphism. The aim of surgery is untethering and dural reconstruction. Accurate depiction of the abnormal anatomy in cases of spinal dysraphism is of utmost importance for surgical manage

Epidemiological, evolutionary, and economic determinants of eradication tails.

Despite modern medical interventions, infectious diseases continue to generate huge socio-economic losses. The benefits of eradicating a disease are therefore high. While successful with smallpox and rinderpest, many other eradication attempts have failed. Eradications require huge and costly efforts, which can be sustained only if sufficient progress can be achieved. While initial successes are usually obtained more easily, progress often becomes harder as a disease becomes rare in the eradication endgame. A long eradication tail of slowly decreasing incidence levels can frustrate eradication

A Tale of Two Tails: Not Just Skin Deep.

The dorsal cutaneous appendage or the so called human tail is a rare congenital anomaly protruding from the lumbo-sacro-coccygeal area. These caudal appendages are divided into true-tails and pseudo-tails. We report here two cases of congenital pseudo-tail with underlying spina bifida and lipo-meningocele. In this article we seek to emphasize that, as the skin and nervous systems are intimately linked by their similar ectodermal origin, a dorsal appendage may be regarded as a cutaneous marker of the underlying spinal dysraphism.

Capturing protein tails by CAP-Gly domains.

Cytoskeleton-associated protein-glycine-rich (CAP-Gly) domains are protein-interaction modules implicated in important cellular processes and in hereditary human diseases. A prominent function of CAP-Gly domains is to bind to C-terminal EEY/F-COO(-) sequence motifs present in alpha-tubulin and in some microtubule-associated protein tails; however, CAP-Gly domains also interact with other structural elements including end-binding homology domains, zinc-finger motifs and proline-rich sequences. Recent findings unravelled the link between tubulin tyrosination and CAP-Gly-protein recruitment to mi

Characterization and treatment of artisanal gold mine tailings.

The solid waste generated by artisanal gold mining, with high mercury and gold contents, can be found in several areas in the South America. The present study focused on the tailings of an artisanal gold mine area located in the Brazilian northeastern. Samples of the mine tailings were taken and used to perform a physical and chemical characterization study using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, neutron activation, X-ray fluorescence, induced coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, among others analytical methods. The results indicate that the material is composed mainly by quartz an

A tale of two tails: ciliary mechanotransduction in ADPKD.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common lethal genetic disorder, characterized by the progressive development of fluid-filled cysts in the kidney, pancreas and liver, and anomalies of the cardiovascular system. Mutations in PKD1 and PKD2, which encode the transmembrane proteins polycystin-1 (PC1) and polycystin-2 (PC2) respectively, account for almost all cases of ADPKD. However, the mechanisms by which abnormalities in PKD1 and PKD2 lead to aberrant kidney development remain unknown. Recent progress in the understanding of ADPKD has focused on primary cilia, which act

Tailed nuclei and dicentric chromosomes in irradiated subjects.

A study of peripheral blood smears from irradiated Chernobyl liquidators and other subjects has shown nuclei of some lymphocytes to have a protrusion into the cytoplasm. Such abnormal nuclei are called "tailed" nuclei (TN). Sixteen main morphologic types, observed in human peripheral blood lymphocytes, are described. The frequency of appearance of lymphocytes with TN in a group of Chernobyl liquidators was significantly higher than in control groups (p < 0.001, in all cases). A positive correlation was found between the TN frequency in lymphocytes and dicentric chromosomes in lymphocytes cultu

The influence of tail biting on performance of fattening pigs.

In comparison to 29 non bitten animals, severe tail biting was found to decrease the daily weight gain (DWG) by 25% in 8 fattening pigs during the period of biting. However, when comparing the weight gain of the lifetime between bitten and non bitten pigs, no influence of the tail biting was found. It is of interest that severely wounded pigs were parenterally treated with prokainpenicillin G for 3 consecutive days in connection with the tail biting, which could be suggested to promote the growth by reducing the influence of infections gained by the tail biting as well as of other infections p

Uterine epithelioid leiomyosarcoma in a pig-tailed macaque.

During ultrasonographic examination following spontaneous abortion, an approximately 6-cm diameter mass of mixed echogenicity is detected in the uterine wall of a mature pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina). Grossly, the mass is associated with the uterine fundus, multilobulate and tan with red-black mottled foci on cut surface. Microscopically, the invasive mass is composed of poorly differentiated round cells arranged in sheets and bundles supported by a fine fibrous stroma. On immunohistochemical evaluation, neoplastic cells contain vimentin, desmin, muscle actin, and smooth muscle alpha-

Association of meningiomas with dural "tails"; surgical significance.

Intracranial meningiomas are characteristically benign tumours with a tendency to recur following surgical resection. Our group is investigating the pathogenesis of meningioma recurrence. In our initial studies we identified two cases of dural "tails" associated with intracranial meningiomas. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance images were utilized to identify the dural "tails" preoperatively. These images aided us in performing a more complete surgical resection of the meningiomas. Histopathological confirmation of meningotheliomatous cell infiltration into the dural "tails" demonstrates t

Traumatic neuroma at the tail of the pancreas following splenectomy.

A 50 year old man presented with abdominal pain and weight loss after a splenectomy performed 26 years ago for abdominal trauma. At laparotomy, a mass was found at the tail of the pancreas. Pathological examination showed this was a traumatic neuroma and revealed evidence of chronic pancreatitis. Traumatic neuroma may be a rare cause of a pancreatic mass, especially after previous surgery or trauma.

Pneumatocele in a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina).

Radiographic examination of a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) with pneumonia revealed a large pneumatocele. The pneumatocele, a thin-walled, partially fluid filled radiolucent area, occupied approximately one-third of the left thorax. Rapid resolution of the pneumatocele accompanied antimicrobial treatment of the pneumonia and coincided with clinical improvement. Severe pulmonary acariasis was found at postmortem 15 months later.

Multi-tailed spermatozoa in a case with asthenospermia and teratospermia.

A case is presented of an infertile male whose spermatozoa showed low mobility, a high percentage of irregular large heads and a variable number of tails (between 0 and 4). In the spermatozoa with several tails each axoneme, surrounded by its own outer fibres and mitochondrial sheath, arose from its own basal plate. Throughout the middle piece of every spermatozoon all the axonemes were arranged in parallel and were enclosed by the same plasma membrane. Usually, at the beginning of the principal piece, the axonemes became separated. At this level each of them constituted a different tail. In m

The effects of etilefrine on blood vessels in the rat tail.

Etilefrine was found to constrict blood vessels in the rat tail through a mechanism which was partly dependent on the sympathetic nerves present in these vessels. The response to the drug was enhanced by pretreagment with noradrenaline and cocaine, and totally abolished by the alpha-receptor antagonist phentolamine. When compared with several other sympathomimetic agents which were tested on the vessel, etilefrine appeared to have a low order of vasoconstrictor activity. These findings would seem to have considerable relevance to the clinical situation where an attempt has been made to use eti
