Chiral hydroxyphosphonates due to their wide range of biological properties are industrially important chemicals. Chemical synthesis of their optical isomers is expensive, time consuming and not friendly to the environment, so biotransformations are under consideration. Among others, these compounds act as enzymes inhibitors. This makes the bioconversions of phosphonates, especially scaling experiments, hard to perform. Biocatalysis is one of the methods that can be applied in synthesis of optically pure compounds. To increase the efficiency of the process with whole cell biocatalysts, it is e

This study is aimed to explore the value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in diagnosing pathogen in fever patients. It is often a challenge to identify the pathogen that caused the infection in the HIV patients with fever. How could the mNGS be helpful for pathogen diagnosis is unclear. Here we reported a case of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patient with 2-month period of fever. After routine clinical laboratory tests including the conventional smear, culture, serological tests and pathological examinations, the causal pathogen still remained undiagnosed. Then the lymph n

BACKGROUND: Following the recent transfer of all accepted species of Penicillium subgenus Biverticillium to Talaromyces (including Talaromyces marneffei, formerly Penicillium marneffei), Penicillium species are becoming increasingly rare causal agents of invasive infections. Herein, we present a report of a type 2 diabetes patient with a fungus ball in the respiratory tract caused by Penicillium capsulatum.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old Chinese female gardener with a 5-year history of type 2 diabetes presented at the Shanghai Changzheng Hospital with fever, a cough producing yellow-white s

Soil contamination by persistent herbicides like haloxyfop-P-methyl (B) poses substantial environmental risks. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) offer a solution but require in-depth optimization. We designed a single-chamber soil MFC with a graphite felt anode and air cathode. A 2D equivalent model coupling secondary current distribution and diluted species transport was built in COMSOL Multiphysics. A specific factor (ffungi) for fungal bioaugmentation was introduced, alongside a substrate promotion-toxicity inhibition function (fB(x)) for the herbicide. The model validated the experimental perfor

Talaromyces marneffei (T. marneffei) stands out as the sole thermobiphasic fungus pathogenic to mammals, including humans, within the fungal community encompassing Ascomycota, Eurotium, Eurotiumles, Fungiaceae, and Cyanobacteria. Thriving as a saprophytic fungus in its natural habitat, it transitions into a pathogenic yeast phase at the mammalian physiological temperature of 37°C. Historically, talaromycosis has been predominantly associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), classified among the three primary opportunistic infections linked with

BACKGROUND: Talaromyces marneffei (TM) primarily infects patients with co-morbidities that cause immunodeficiency, but non-secretory myeloma (NSMM) is rare. TSM and NSMM are associated with fever, osteolysis, and swollen lymph nodes, thereby making it difficult for clinicians to make differential diagnosis. In this case, we describe TM infection coexisting with NSMM.
CASE PRESENTATION: We retrospectively reviewed the case of a male (without human immunodeficiency virus infection) with fever, thoracalgia, swollen lymph nodes, and subcutaneous nodules who presented to the First Affiliated Hospi

Marine fungi, rich in unique secondary metabolites with diverse activities, are a valuable source for novel lead compounds. Steroids, a prominent class of bioactive compounds from marine fungi, have been extensively studied for their diverse pharmacological properties. This review describes the structural diversity, bioactivities, and sources of 175 marine fungal steroids (2015-2023), mainly from Aspergillus, Penicillium, Talaromyces, etc., in seaweed, mangroves, sediments, and marine animals like sponges and corals. Among them, 74 steroids exhibit antibacterial, antitumor, enzyme inhibitory,

Environmental fungal pathogens relevant to human and animal health pose significant risks, particularly in regions with intensive farming and climate variability. Several taxa detected in Thailand's clinical and environmental samples, such as Candida tropicalis, Talaromyces marneffei, and Mucor spp., are listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) Fungal Priority Pathogen List (FPPL). This study integrated next-generation sequencing (NGS) metabarcoding and decision tree models to characterize fungal communities and identify environmental conditions associated with pathogen absence across 18

Dematophora necatrix (syn. Rosellinia necatrix), a fungal pathogen causing white root rot in trees, dies when exposed to 35 °C for more than 2 days. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying fungal death under non-lethal heat conditions in the presence of soil microbes, testing the hypothesis that heat stress in D. necatrix is a trigger. After treatment at 35 °C for 2-12 h, correlative analysis was conducted using one mycelium of D. necatrix (W562) for gene expression, growth recovery, and competition ability against the hyphosphere fungus Talaromyces pinophilus (TAi6s), and anot

Talaromyces marneffei infection (TMI) causing vertebral osteomyelitis of the cervical spine is extremely rare. TMI in an HIV-uninfected patient is also unusual. This report presents the successful treatment of an HIV-uninfected TMI patient who underwent C6 and T1 vertebrectomies, bone grafting, and anterior cervical plating accompanied by antifungal therapy. A 63-year-old woman was diagnosed with adult-onset immune deficiency. She suddenly developed progressive neck pain without neurologic deficit. The plain radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging showed inflammation and abscess formation a

Penicillium, Talaromyces, and Purpureocillium species (so called Penicillium-like) are increasingly recognised as opportunistic fungal pathogens capable of causing a wide range of infections, from superficial to invasive. Although ocular infections caused by these environmental fungi have been reported in the literature, they remain relatively underrecognised. We conducted a multicentric retrospective study of Penicillium-like ocular cases reported in the RESeau de Surveillance des Infections Fongique (RESSIF) database of the French National Reference Center for Invasive Mycoses and Antifungal

Anticytokine autoantibodies (ACAAs) can cause adult onset immunodeficiencies which mimic primary immunodeficiencies and can present as refractory and severe fungal infections. This paper provides an overview of the role of innate immunity, including key cytokines, in fungal infections and then describes four clinical scenarios where ACAAs are associated with severe presentations of a fungal infection: (1) Talaromyces marneffei infection and anti-interferon-γ, (2) histoplasmosis and anti-interferon-γ, (3) Cryptococcus gattii infection and anti-GM-CSF, and (4) mucocutaneous candidiasis and anti-

Many fungi cause pulmonary disease in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Pathogens include Pneumocystis jirovecii, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus spp, Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidioides spp, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Talaromyces marneffei, and Emmonsia spp. Because symptoms are frequently nonspecific, a high index of suspicion for fungal infection is required for diagnosis. Clinical manifestations of fungal infection in HIV-infected patients frequently depend on the degree of immunosuppression and the CD4+ helper T cell count. Est

Eurotiales is a diverse and speciose order and includes economically important genera like Aspergillus, Penicillium, Paecilomyces and Talaromyces. Historically, species identifications based on morphology are challenging. The publication of accepted species lists and the availability of representative DNA sequences for type strains have contributed greatly towards accurate species identification and facilitated the description of many new species. However, despite current advancements, a proportion of newly described species within these taxonomically challenging genera represent, in fact, exi

We tested treatement with UV irradiation for controlling the growth of bread mold. First, we analyzed the sterilizing effect of a dose of approximately 25 mJ/cm2 radiation on nine Penicillium and two Talaromyces strains that were isolated from a bread-manufacturing plant. The P. chermesinum and P. paneum strains were sterilized completely at that dose, while it was only partially effective against P. corylophilum. P. chrysogenum and P. decumbens were sterilized at a dose of approximately 120 mJ/cm2, while T. amestolkiae was sterilized at approximately 150 mJ/cm2. Sterilization of T. cecidicola

BACKGROUND: Treatment of critically ill patients with Talaromyces marneffei (T. marneffei, TM) infection involving multiple organ dysfunction remains a major clinical challenge. As an important contributor to mortality among individuals with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), talaromycosis remains associated with mortality rates of up to 30% even with appropriate antifungal therapy. Severe hepatic and renal impairment may restrict antifungal dosing and thus further compromise therapeutic efficacy. However, current clinical evidence regarding the management of Talaromyces marneffei infe

INTRODUCTION: Cassava stem and root rot caused by Fusarium falciforme (Fusarium solani species complex) constrains production in waterlogged tropical systems. In Kerala, India, disease endemicity differs markedly between wetlands and uplands, yet the ecological basis of this variation remains unresolved. We tested whether rhizoplane mycobiome structure and functional stability govern pathogen suppression across these habitats.
METHODS: Rhizoplane fungal communities from healthy and diseased plants in endemic wetlands and non-endemic uplands were profiled using Internal Transcribed Spacer ampl
