Relationship between discrimination tasks of the cantab and the corpus callosum morphology in Alzheimer's disease.

The relationship between performances on a simple discrimination task of the Attentional Set Shifting of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Auto mated Battery (CANTAB) and morphometry of the corpus callosum is examined in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Analysis showed patients with probable Alzheimer's disease are heterogeneous for the relationship between performances in the attentional test of the CANTAB and the anterior callosal atrophies. Interest in these results for clinical diagnosis of this mental disease is discussed.

Relationship Between the Parietal Cortex and Task Switching: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Combined with an Event-related Potential Study.

Task switching refers to a set of cognitive processes involved in shifting attention from one task to another. In recent years, researchers have applied transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to investigate the causal relationship between the parietal cortex and task switching. However, results from available studies are highly inconsistent. This may be due to the unclear understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Therefore, the current study utilized event-related potential (ERP) analysis to investigate the modulatory effects of tDCS on task-switching processes. Twenty-four subjects

Primary Cognitive Factors Impaired after Glioma Surgery and Associated Brain Regions.

Previous studies have shown that cognitive impairments in patients with brain tumors are not severe. However, to preserve the postsurgical QOL of patients with brain tumors, it is important to identify "primary" cognitive functions and associated brain regions that are more vulnerable to cognitive impairments following surgery. The objective of this study was to investigate primary cognitive factors affecting not only simple cognitive tasks but also several other cognitive tasks and associated brain regions. Patients with glioma in the left (n = 33) and the right (n = 21) hemisphere participat

Adults with dyslexia demonstrate space-based and object-based covert attention deficits: shifting attention to the periphery and shifting attention between objects in the left visual field.

Performance on a covert visual attention task is compared between a group of adults with developmental dyslexia (specifically phonological difficulties) and a group of age and IQ matched controls. The group with dyslexia were generally slower to detect validly-cued targets. Costs of shifting attention toward the periphery when the target was invalidly cued were significantly higher for the group with dyslexia, while costs associated with shifts toward the fovea tended to be lower. Higher costs were also shown by the group with dyslexia for up-down shifts of attention in the periphery. A visual

Learning attentional templates for value-based decision-making.

Attention filters sensory inputs to enhance task-relevant information. It is guided by an "attentional template" that represents the stimulus features that are currently relevant. To understand how the brain learns and uses templates, we trained monkeys to perform a visual search task that required them to repeatedly learn new attentional templates. Neural recordings found that templates were represented across the prefrontal and parietal cortex in a structured manner, such that perceptually neighboring templates had similar neural representations. When the task changed, a new attentional temp

A neurobehavioral examination of individuals with high-functioning autism and Asperger's disorder using a fronto-striatal model of dysfunction.

The repetitive, stereotyped, and obsessive behaviors that characterize autism may in part be attributable to disruption of the region of the fronto-striatal system, which mediates executive abilities. Neuropsychological testing has shown that children with autism exhibit set-shifting deficiencies on tests such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting task but show normal inhibitory ability on variants of the Stroop color-word test. According to Minshew and Goldstein's multiple primary deficit theory, the complexity of the executive functioning task is important in determining the performance of individua

The Effect of Thermal Pain on Working Memory: Behavioral Evidence from the n-Back Task.

Pain and working memory interact bidirectionally, yet most paradigms treat pain as an extraneous distractor rather than task-relevant content. This study investigated whether thermal sensations can be encoded and updated in working memory in an n-back paradigm. Nineteen healthy adults completed visual (location) and thermal (temperature) single n-back tasks, cross-modal conditions with task-irrelevant distractors, and a dual n-back task across three load levels (1-, 2-, 3-back). Results showed that thermal cues consistently yielded lower accuracy and longer response times (RTs) compared to vis

Altered theta distribution and coherence during set-shifting in older age.

Cognitive flexibility is an executive function that enables adapting behaviour to a changing environment and is thus critical for daily life. The degree of its preservation upon healthy aging and the neural mechanisms underlying it are still a matter of debate. To investigate the electrophysiological correlates of cognitive flexibility in older age, we measured cognitive flexibility in 99 young (24.75 ± 4.45 years) and 83 older adults (69.19 ± 6.25) using electroencephalography (EEG). Compared to young adults, older adults showed a more conservative response pattern with longer reaction times,

Applying the quick exposure check in the workstation design process, physical and virtual prototype assessment.

BACKGROUND: The Quick Exposure Check (QEC) assesses four major body parts and engages users in assessing some physical interactions relevant to design in task analysis. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we investigated the application of QEC as the ergonomic intervention to detect pre-production ergonomic design faults in the apple sorting machine by applying physical and virtual prototyping for three different tasks analysis divided into two phases (Task 1: Apple harvesting and preparation for sorting; Task 2: Sorting control and separation of waste fruits; Task 3: Transfer of separated apples). An information theory account of late frontoparietal ERP positivities in cognitive control.

ERP research on task switching has revealed distinct transient and sustained positive waveforms (latency circa 300-900 ms) while shifting task rules or stimulus-response (S-R) mappings. However, it remains unclear whether such switch-related positivities show similar scalp topography and index context-updating mechanisms akin to those posed for domain-general (i.e., classic P300) positivities in many task domains. To examine this question, ERPs were recorded from 31 young adults (18-30 years) while they were intermittently cued to switch or repeat their perceptual categorization of Gabor grati

Enhanced cognitive control in Tourette Syndrome during task uncertainty.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a developmental neurological condition that is characterised by the presence of multiple motor and one or more vocal tics. Tics are highly stereotyped repetitive behaviours that fluctuate in type, complexity and severity. TS has been linked to impaired cognitive control processes, however, a recent study (Mueller et al. in Curr Biol 16:570-573, 2006) demonstrated that young people with TS, although exhibiting chronic motor and vocal tics, nevertheless performed significantly better than a group of age-matched controls on a task that required extremely high levels of c

Acceptability and impact of group interpersonal therapy (IPT-G) on Kenyan adolescent mothers living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Task shifting is a well-tested implementation strategy within low- and middle-income countries that addresses the shortage of trained mental health personnel. Task shifting can increase access to care for patients with mental illnesses. In Kenya, community health workers (CHWs) are a combination of community health assistants and community health volunteers and have played a crucial role on this front. In our study, we seek to assess the acceptability and feasibility of Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT-G) delivered by CHWs among depressed postpartum adolescents (PPAs) living

Are weight shifting and dynamic control strategies different in postmenopausal women with and without type-I osteoporosis?

OBJECTIVE: Tracking postural control processes at dynamic conditions might help develop an appropriate rehabilitation program in osteoporotic women. This study aimed to investigate the differences in center of pressure (COP) control at weight shifting and dynamic tasks between postmenopausal women with and without type-I osteoporosis. Also, we investigated the correlations between bone mineral density (BMD), the activity-specific balance confidence questionnaire (ABC-Q) score, and postural control parameters. METHOD: A total of 62 volunteer postmenopausal women participated in this study. The

Effect of Brain Stimulation on Effort Is Task Dependent: Evidence From an HD-tDCS Study on Cardiovascular Responses.

This study tested the effect of frontal hemispheric asymmetry (FHA) on mental effort in tasks of fixed and unfixed difficulty. To manipulate FHA, we applied high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and assessed its impact on cardiovascular responses. Forty-three participants performed two task conditions: (a) a fixed, easy task with a 50% accuracy criterion for success and (b) an unfixed, self-paced task that delivered monetary rewards for each correct response. Before completing the tasks, participants received left cathod

Challenges with shifting, regardless of disengagement: attention mechanisms and eye movements in Williams syndrome.

BACKGROUND: People with Williams syndrome (WS) face challenges in various areas of cognitive processing, including attention. Previous studies suggest that these challenges are particularly pronounced when disengagement of attention from a previously attended stimulus is required, as compared to shifting attention without the need to disengage. Difficulties with attention could in turn be implicated in several of the behavioral characteristics of WS. Here, disengagement and shifting of visual attention, together with pupil dilation, were independently assessed in one of the largest eye-trackin

Task Sharing in Global Cardiac Surgery: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Access to cardiac surgical services is limited in low- and middle-income countries. The shortage of cardiac surgical care providers is a major contributor to this limited access to lifesaving care. Task shifting and task sharing allow nonspecialists to perform roles typically reserved for specialists such as cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, and other health care workers with specific training in cardiac surgical care. Task sharing has increased access to care without compromising outcomes in related surgical fields, such as general surgery, orthopedic surgery, ne

Dynamics of EEG rhythms support distinct visual selection mechanisms in parietal cortex: a simultaneous transcranial magnetic stimulation and EEG study.

Using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), we have recently shown a functional anatomical distinction in human parietal cortex between regions involved in maintaining attention to a location [ventral intraparietal sulcus (vIPS)] and a region involved in shifting attention between locations [medial superior parietal lobule (mSPL)]. In particular, while rTMS interference over vIPS impaired target discrimination at contralateral attended locations, interference over mSPL affected performance following shifts of attention regardless of the visual field (Capotosto et al., 2013).
