What Happens after Activation of Ascaridole? Reactive Compounds and Their Implications for Skin Sensitization.

To replace animal testing and improve the prediction of skin sensitization, significant attention has been directed to the use of alternative methods. The direct peptide reactivity assay (DPRA), the regulatory agencies' approved alternative in chemico method, has been applied for understanding the sensitization capacity of activated ascaridole. Ascaridole, the oxidative metabolite of α-terpinene, is considered to be one of the components responsible for the contact allergy associated with essential oils derived from Chenopodium and Melaleuca species. The recently developed high-throughput scre

Emerging Insights into the Applicability of Essential Oils in the Management of Acne Vulgaris.

The occurrence of pustules, comedones, nodules, and cysts defines acne vulgaris, a prevalent chronic inflammatory dermatological condition. In the past few decades, essential oils extracted from varied natural sources have acquired recognition due to their potential medicinal applications in acne therapy. However, there is not yet sufficient medical data to fully characterize this interaction. Multiple factors contribute to the development of acne vulgaris, including excessive sebaceous production, inflammatory processes, hyperkeratinization, and infection with Cutibacterium acnes. Essential o

Medicated shampoos for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common papulosquamous disorder of the skin, affecting 3% to 5% of the population. Dandruff, a less severe form of seborrheic dermatitis, affects a greater proportion of the population. The exact pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown, however colonization of the lipophilic yeast, Malasezzia furfur, and an inflammatory reaction to this yeast each seem to play a role in disease etiology. Therefore, treatment for seborrheic dermatitis is aimed at yeast elimination and inflammation control. Several treatment modalities are available for seborrheic dermatitis an

Description of an Australian endemic species of Trioza (Hemiptera: Triozidae) pest of the endemic tea tree, Melaleuca alternifolia (Myrtaceae).

Psyllids, also known as jumping plant lice, are phloem feeding Hemiptera that often show a strict species-specific relationship with their host plants. When psyllid-plant associations involve economically important crops, this may lead to the recognition of a psyllid species as an agricultural or horticultural pest. The Australian endemic tea tree, Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betche) Cheel., has been used for more than a century to extract essential oils and, long before that, as a traditional medicine by Indigenous Australian people. Recently, a triozid species has been found to damage t

Pharmacotherapy of Demodex-Associated Blepharitis: Current Trends and Future Perspectives.

Demodex-associated blepharitis (DAB) is a common condition in our society. Patients report not only uncomfortable and bothersome symptoms but also decreased self-esteem and confidence. Because of its nonspecific signs, pharmacists are often the first healthcare professionals patients consult. What is most concerning is that DAB can cause serious complications within the eye, such as dry eye syndrome, corneal scarring, or recurrent styes and chalazia. Therefore, we aimed to compile both standard and innovative therapies and compare their effectiveness and safety. As shown, standard methods rema

Usage patterns of aromatherapy essential oil among Chinese consumers.

Given the concern over contact allergy risk associated with aromatherapy, information regarding the use of essential oils (EOs) is crucial for consumer dermal exposure assessment. In this study we mainly aim to describe the usage patterns of EOs among Chinese consumers to provide important data for exposure assessment to fragrance allergens in EOs. A web survey was conducted in April 2020 among 1,518 potential Chinese EO consumers to assess consumer usage patterns. The usage patterns of 11 types of EOs were collected among female consumers (N = 457; ages 0-70). For females aged 0-14, they used

Broad spectrum activities of essential oils in the lab fail to translate to blueberry disease control for organic producers in the field.

Blueberry production in the southeastern U.S. is challenged by various fungal diseases, especially in organic systems. Essential oils (EOs), derived from plants, offer a potential sustainable alternative to synthetic fungicides. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of several EOs against key blueberry fungal pathogens including Colletotrichum, Corynespora, Lasiodiplodia, and Neofusicoccum isolates. While tea tree oil showed very limited antifungal activity; thyme, oregano, savory, and cinnamon oils demonstrated varying, but promising antifungal activity against all fun

Dry eye disease: A review of anti-inflammatory therapies.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a common chronic ocular disease. DED can have a significant impact on visual function, causing disturbances to comfort, daily activities, and general quality of life. The varied nature of DED makes it difficult to point to a specific cause of the syndrome. However, current literature agrees that the inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva plays a major role in its pathogenesis. Therapies targeted toward inflammation have shown varied success in the treatment of DED. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the prevalence and inflammatory pathophysiolo

Chronic Nipple Sinus Secondary to Demodex folliculorum Infestation: A Case Report.

Demodex folliculorum mites are common commensals of human skin. They typically inhabit pilosebaceous units. While often asymptomatic, infestation can lead to demodicosis. Involvement of the nipple-areolar complex is rare and can mimic other benign or malignant conditions. Herein, we report a case of a 30-year-old, healthy, single woman who initially presented with symptoms suggestive of a simple breast cyst. Eight months later, following a severe COVID-19 infection, she developed a discharging periareolar ulcer with associated nipple retraction. Surgical exploration revealed a sinus tract conn

Combined effect of heat, essential oils and salt on fungicidal activity against Trichophyton mentagrophytes in a foot bath.

This work was originally undertaken to determine the effective conditions of essential oils against Trichophyton mentagrophytes in vitro for the treatment of tinea pedis in a foot bath. Agar blocks implanted with T. mentagrophytes were immersed in 0.1% aqueous agar containing two-fold dilutions of essential oils with or without sodium chloride at 27 degrees C, 37 degrees C and 42 degrees C for 10 and 20 min. The number of surviving mycelia on the agar blocks was determined from the standard curves of the colony diameter and original inocula of the conidia. At the same time, the thermal effect
