Ecological relationships of Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann with other tick species on wildlife hosts at cow-calf farms implementing integrated pest management in eastern Tennessee.

Longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) is an invasive tick species that parasitizes a variety of vertebrate hosts and transmits pathogens affecting humans and livestock in the United States (US). Unfortunately, the behaviour of this tick at the wildlife–livestock interface is not well understood. To better understand how H. longicornis uses wildlife hosts and interacts with established tick species on farm settings we sampled small and medium wildlife seasonally for a year, using Sherman and Tomahawk traps, on three H. longicornis-infested cattle farms in eastern Tennessee. We confirmed t

Pregnancy Status, Risk Factors, and Opportunities for Referral to Care Among Reproductive-Aged Women With Newly Reported Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Tennessee.

OBJECTIVES: From 2006 through 2012, the number of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections increased 364% among persons aged ≤30, including reproductive-aged women, in Central Appalachian states. Outreach to reproductive-aged women with newly diagnosed HCV infection affords a unique opportunity to provide counseling, further testing, and linkage to treatment. We modeled a centrally located statewide effort to reach this population and their health care providers to ascertain pregnancy status, HCV risk factors, and opportunities for linkage to additional services. METHODS: Using the Tennessee

Leveraging Explainable AI to Identify Determinants of Lifetime HIV Testing Among Adults in Tennessee, United States: Evidence for Targeted Public Health Strategies From BRFSS 2023.

BACKGROUND: HIV testing is a cornerstone of prevention and care, yet disparities in testing uptake persist across populations. Traditional statistical approaches may not fully capture the non-linear interactions among sociodemographic, behavioral, and health-related factors influencing HIV testing. This study used explainable AI in addition to traditional epidemiological methods to identify determinants of lifetime HIV testing among adults in Tennessee, United States. METHODS: This study applied both traditional epidemiological and machine learning (ML) techniques to predict lifetime HIV test

Locating suitable habitats for West Nile Virus-infected mosquitoes through association of environmental characteristics with infected mosquito locations: a case study in Shelby County, Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: Since its first detection in 2001, West Nile Virus (WNV) poses a significant health risk for residents of Shelby County in Tennessee. This situation forced public health officials to adopt efficient methods for monitoring disease spread and predicting future outbreaks. Analyses that use environmental variables to find suitable habitats for WNV-infected mosquitoes have the potential to support these efforts. Using the Mahalanobis Distance statistic, we identified areas of Shelby County that are ecologically most suitable for sustaining WNV, based on similarity of environmental chara

Spatial-temporal clusters of host-seeking Aedes albopictus, Aedes japonicus, and Aedes triseriatus collections in a La Crosse virus endemic county (Knox County, Tennessee, USA).

A bite from a La Crosse virus (LACV) infected Aedes mosquito can cause La Crosse encephalitis (LACE), which is a neuro-invasive disease that disproportionately affects children under the age of 16 in Southern Appalachia. The three vectors for LACV are Aedes albopictus (Skuse), Ae. japonicus (Theobald), and Ae. triseriatus (Say). Localized maps of the geographic distribution of vectors are practical tools for mosquito management personnel to target areas with high mosquito abundance. This study hypothesized that LACV vectors have unique species-specific spatial and temporal clusters. To test th

Tennessee's In-state Vulnerability Assessment for a "Rapid Dissemination of Human Immunodeficiency Virus or Hepatitis C Virus Infection" Event Utilizing Data About the Opioid Epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Knowing which factors contribute to county-level vulnerability to a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) outbreak, and which counties are most vulnerable, guides public health and clinical interventions. We therefore examined the impact of locally available indicators related to the opioid epidemic on prior national models of HIV/HCV outbreak vulnerability. METHODS: Tennessee's 95 counties were the study sample. Predictors from 2012 and 2013 were used, mirroring prior methodology from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Results of an intervention in an academic Internal Medicine Clinic to continue, step-down, or discontinue proton pump inhibitor therapy related to a tennessee medicaid formulary change.

BACKGROUND: In July 2005, the State of Tennessee Medicaid Program (TennCare) announced formulary changes for proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to be implemented in August 2005. Prior to these changes, pantoprazole was the only preferred PPI, and there were no restrictions to its use. The revised formulary included 3 preferred PPIs (esomeprazole, lansoprazole, and omeprazole OTC), all of which required prior authorization (PA). In order to obtain an approved PA for a PPI, the patient was required to have either (a) a diagnosis of erosive esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus, Schatzki's ring, a patholog

Host choice and West Nile virus infection rates in blood-fed mosquitoes, including members of the Culex pipiens complex, from Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee, 2002-2003.

The source of bloodmeals in 2,082 blood-fed mosquitoes collected from February 2002 through December 2003 in Memphis and surrounding areas of Shelby County, Tennessee were determined. Members of the genus Culex and Anopheles quadrimaculatus predominated in the collections. Members of the Cx. pipiens complex and Cx. restuans were found to feed predominately upon avian hosts, though mammalian hosts made up a substantial proportion of the bloodmeals in these species. No significant difference was seen in the host class of bloodmeals in mosquitoes identified as Cx. pipiens pipiens, Cx. p. quinquef

Detection of very high-level penicillin-resistant variants of the Tennessee (23 F)-4 clone via single and serial transformations with four serotype 19 A international pneumococcal clones.

In the United States, penicillin-resistant variants of the Tennessee (Tenn) (23 F)-4 clone account for a substantial proportion of the very-high-level penicillin-resistant (MIC 8 microg/ml) infections in the 7-valent pneumococcal protein conjugate vaccine (PCV 7) era. Serotype 19 A strains account for an increasing proportion of penicillin-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae infections. Sequential transformations of the Tenn (23 F)-4 clone (penicillin MIC 0.1 microg/ml) were performed with four penicillin-nonsusceptible serotype 19 A international clones (penicillin MIC): S. Comparative genomic analysis of a Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O145:H25 associated with a severe pediatric case of hemolytic uremic syndrome in Davidson County, Tennessee, US.

BACKGROUND: Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STECs) are foodborne pathogens associated with bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Although the STEC O157 serogroup accounts for the highest number of infections, HUS-related complications and deaths, the STEC non-O157, as a group, accounts for a larger proportion of STEC infections and lower HUS cases. There is limited information available on how to recognize non-O157 serotypes associated with severe disease. The objectives of this study were to describe a patient with STEC non-O157 infection complicated with HUS and to conduct a co

Maternal Pre-Pregnancy Body Mass Index and Its Impact on Short- and Long-Chain Fatty Acid and Microbiome Profiles of Human Breast Milk in Caucasian Women of Northeast Tennessee.

Background: Increasing evidence suggests that breast milk and its bioactive components, including short-chain fatty acids and the milk microbiome, are influenced by maternal nutrition and body mass index (BMI). Bioactive components transferred to the infant through breast milk play a pivotal role in infant growth and development and have indications in the child's future short- and long-term health outcomes. This study aimed to assess the impact of maternal pre-pregnancy BMI (PP-BMI) on human breast milk macronutrient composition, short- and long-chain fatty acid profiles, and breast milk micr

Factors associated with pregnancy intention among women who have experienced a short birth interval: findings from the 2009 to 2011 Mississippi and 2009 Tennessee Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System.

PURPOSE: One-third of all pregnancies in the United States are conceived within 18 months of a prior live birth. Preventing unintended pregnancies may help to decrease the prevalence of pregnancies with these short interpregnancy intervals. However, data on factors associated with pregnancy intention among women who have had short birth intervals are sparse. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data were used to further evaluate these associations. METHODS: Because only Mississippi and Tennessee Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System include a survey question about birth interval

Positive predictive value of a case definition for diabetes mellitus using automated administrative health data in children and youth exposed to antipsychotic drugs or control medications: a Tennessee Medicaid study.

BACKGROUND: We developed and validated an automated database case definition for diabetes in children and youth to facilitate pharmacoepidemiologic investigations of medications and the risk of diabetes. METHODS: The present study was part of an in-progress retrospective cohort study of antipsychotics and diabetes in Tennessee Medicaid enrollees aged 6-24 years. Diabetes was identified from diabetes-related medical care encounters: hospitalizations, outpatient visits, and filled prescriptions. The definition required either a primary inpatient diagnosis or at least two other encounters of dif

Low uptake of HIV self-testing among Black men who have sex with men living in a Southern U.S. city (Nashville, Tennessee): determinants and implications from a community-based study.

Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) face a disproportionate HIV burden in the U.S. Yet, HIV self-testing (HIVST) uptake remains limited. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 203 BMSM in Nashville, Tennessee (2019-2020) to assess HIVST patterns, determinants, and barriers/facilitators. Overall, 29.6% reported ever using HIVST, with 9.8% using it in the past three months. Higher likelihood of HIVST use was associated with older age, higher income, condomless anal sex, knowing peers who used HIVST, and moderate to severe anxiety. Lower likelihood was associated with self-identifying as he

Two new species of Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 (Bivalvulida: Myxobolidae) are described from the gill of the black redhorse (Moxostoma duquesnei [Leueur][Cypriniformes: Catostomidae]) from the Little Tennessee River Basin, North Carolina, United States. Myxobolus branchiofilum n. sp. infects lumen of the lamellar arterioles and Myxobolus branchiopecten n. sp. infects the bone and cartilage at the tip of the gill rakers. They differ from all congeners by a combination of myxospore dimensions and the presence or absence of an iodinophilic vacuole in the sporoplasm, mucous envelope, intercapsular pr
