Evaluation of thyroid hormone indices was performed in 138 children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes, with their siblings serving as controls. The DKA group consisted of 76 children who had diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at initial diagnosis. The non-DKA group consisted of 62 children and the control group of 35. The thyroid function tests of the patients were measured within 3 days of the initial diagnosis of diabetes and at least one follow-up test one month to two years after adequate treatment of diabetes. The DKA group had significantly lower levels of T3, T4, free T4 and FTI than did th

Selenium is pivotal element in maintaining homeostasis of human body. It is capable of exerting an influence on immunological responses, cell growth and viral defence. Nevertheless, it is mostly required for the proper thyroid function. There were described 25 selenoproteins, which play various roles in human body. Selenium is an essential particle in the active site of enzymes such as GPXs (glutathione peroxidases), Ds (deiodinases) and TRs (thioredoxin reductases). Owing to this, it has a fundamental importance in the synthesis and function of thyroid hormones, and protects cells against fre

Several antineoplastic treatments have been responsible for thyroid dysfunction and thyroid eye disease. Min, Vaidya, and Becker (2011) reported a case of euthyroid Graves orbitopathy after treatment with ipilimumab with the patient displaying proptosis and myositis in the setting of normal thyroid function tests and elevated thyroid antibodies. The authors report a case of a 76-year-old woman who developed right upper lid retraction and proptosis after 2.5 years of treatment with lenalidomide for multiple myeloma. Thyroid function tests were normal: thyroid-stimulating hormone 0.808 mIU/mL, t

Thyroid disease is a common endocrine disorder in pregnant women and important to recognize. The clinical management relies on biochemical assessment of thyroid function and thyroid autoantibodies from a panel of routinely available tests. A challenge regarding biochemical assessment in pregnancy relates to the physiological adaptations that influence the analyses used for diagnosis and monitoring of maternal thyroid disease. The physiological adaptations include an increased activity of the thyroid gland, an increase in the levels of binding proteins, and a suppression of the immune system wh

Enlargement of the thyroid gland during adolescence should be considered a pathologic rather than physiologic process. With diffuse enlargement in an asymptomatic patient, thyroid function tests and thyroid antibodies usually are the only tests needed to define the diagnosis of euthyroid autoimmune thyroiditis. Patients with lobular or nodular thyroid enlargement may require additional tests if the diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis cannot be established by the presence of thyroid antibodies in serum. The tests to define the anatomic and functional status of nodular thyroid disease include u

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of thyrotoxicosis and coexistent diseases in patients with atrial fibrillation admitted to a general medicine ward.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients with the discharge diagnosis of atrial fibrillation were studied. The study design was retrospective for the years 1993-1994 and prospective from April 1995 through December 1997. Information on thyroid function tests was obtained from medical records in the retrospective part, but TSH, T4 and T3 were measured for patients admitted during the prospective part. Coexistent diseases were recorded.
RESULTS: At

Various drugs may cause thyroid dysfunction. The drugs which may cause thyrotoxicosis include interferon, molecular-targeted agents, amiodarone, thyroid hormone itself and so on. Those which cause hypothyroidism include anti-thyroid drugs, lithium and iodine etc. which inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion, and dopamine etc. which block TSH secretion. Those drugs which alter the thyroid hormone metabolism or the binding to TBG or those inhibit thyroid hormone absorption may cause hypothyroidism or deteriorate it in patients with hypothyroidism treated with thyroid hormone or those wi

To examine the biochemical changes in coexisting hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism, we have studied two female cases in our medical center. Both patients received biochemistry study, thyroid function test, thyroid autoantibody determination, parathyroid function tests and thyroid scan. They all had increased thyroid function. The concentration of parathyroid hormone was found to elevate in both cases. After thyroid function turned normal, hypercalcemia was still present. Both patients underwent neck operation. Parathyroid adenoma was found in both cases. The pictures of thyroid pathology

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the administration of pharmacological quantities of iodine during interferon-alpha (rIFN-alpha) treatment of chronic viral hepatitis B and C (HCV) would exacerbate the potential adverse effects of rIFN alpha on thyroid function.
DESIGN: Thyroid function tests were carried out in 48 euthyroid patients before and during rIFN-alpha therapy of HCV. Twenty-one of these patients were also treated with 10 drops saturated solution of potassium iodine (SSKI, approximately 350 mg iodine daily). Eight patients with HCV but not treated with rIFN-alpha received 10 drops SSK

Thyroid hemiagenesis is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the absence of one thyroid lobe. Most cases are asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally. It is an important condition to recognize clinically, as the compensatory function of the remaining lobe may not be sufficient over time and may result in thyroid dysfunction. A 15-year-old female was referred for routine assessment because of a paternal family history of hypothyroidism. Physical examination revealed an enlarged right thyroid lobe, and ultrasonography confirmed congenital absence of the left lobe. Laboratory tests revealed

Hypothyroidism, the deficiency of thyroid hormone, is a common condition worldwide. It affects almost all body systems and has a wide variety of clinical presentations from being asymptomatic to, in rare cases, life threatening. The classic symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, lethargy, weight gain, and cold intolerance; however, these symptoms are non-specific and the diagnosis is typically made on biochemical grounds through serum thyroid function tests. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), although other causes, includin

Although it is well-known that autoimmune thyroid diseases are more common in most of the autoimmune connective tissue diseases, the relationship between autoinflammatory diseases and autoimmune thyroid diseases has not well-evaluated yet and still remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland and to evaluate thyroid function tests in children with familial Mediterranean fever. Thyroxine, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and thyroid autoimmune markers such as thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies, and thyroid ultrasoun

160 sera of patients with normal or disturbed thyroid function was tested by ETR (Byk-Mallinckrodt) and Quantisorb (Abbott) for their metabolically effective thyroxine concentration. In 124 cases the in vitro findings were correlated with extensive clinical data, which had permitted to establish a definite judgement of thyroid function. 5,5--13,5 mug% were considered as normal values with Quantisorb, 0,8--1,18 (see article) with ETR. A critical evaluation of the test results showed a better distinction between normal and abnormal thyroid function with Quantisorb, which explains also the higher

During infection with HIV, overt clinical or biochemical thyroid dysfunctions are rare. When present, thyroid failure generally results from the destruction of the thyroid gland by opportunistic infections such as Pneumocystis carinii, or tumoural processes such as KS. Less frequently, hypothalamic-pituitary failure due to central nervous system infections is involved. Some cases of thyroiditis with thyrotoxicosis or hypothyroidism due to Pneumocystis carinii have also been reported. Subtle alterations of thyroid function tests are more common in HIV infection and are sometimes already detecta

Thyroid pathologies are the most common forms of endocrinopathy under anticancer immunotherapy. Frequency ranges from 3% to 22% for hypothyroidism and 1% to 11% for thyrotoxicosis. Risk is higher with anti-PD-1 than anti-CTLA-4 treatment and higher again with associated treatment. Pathophysiology mainly consists in silent inflammatory thyroiditis, which accounts for the usual presentation of transient thyrotoxicosis followed by hypothyroidism. Therapeutic strategy usually consists in monitoring with or without symptomatic treatment in case of thyrotoxicosis, and levothyroxine replacement thera

It is well known that selenium plays a fundamental role in regulating thyroid and other functions of the human body like reproduction, autoimmunity, glucose metabolism or bone metabolism. While for thyroid function investigation, radioimmunoassays and radioimmunometric assays both key techniques of nuclear medicine are used, for selenium measurements atomic absorption spectrometry is the method of choice. Normal thyroid gland retains high selenium concentrations even under conditions of inadequate selenium supply and expresses many of the known selenocysteine-containing proteins. Adequate sele

To investigate a putative inhibitory effect of the antifungal agent ketoconazole on thyroid function, five patients with thyrotoxicosis and ten normal subjects were treated with ketoconazole at high doses (600 mg daily in three 200 mg oral doses) for four weeks. TSH, TT3, TT4FT3 and FT4 were measured before and after the end of treatment. In all of the normal subjects no significant modifications of circulating thyroid hormones and TSH were detected. In patients with thyrotoxicosis an increase of the levels of circulating thyroid hormones and a worsening of clinical signs were observed. Howeve
