Efficacy of a novel chewable tablet containing sarolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel (Simparica Trio™) against four common tick species infesting dogs in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Tick infestations can cause direct deleterious effects to dogs as a result of tick blood-feeding, and indirectly ticks can transmit disease agents that can be detrimental to the health of both dogs and humans. Six laboratory studies were conducted to support dosage selection and efficacy confirmation of a novel combination of sarolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel against four tick species that commonly infest dogs in Europe. METHODS: Two studies were conducted against Dermacentor reticulatus (one of which was a dose determination study), two against Ixodes ricinus, and one each again

Molecular detection and genetic characterization of the potentially pathogenic Coxiella burnetii and the endosymbiotic Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii in ticks infesting camels (Camelus dromedarius) from Tunisia.

Tick-borne bacteria are considered to be emerging in camels, but data about their occurrence in Tunisian dromedaries and their infesting ticks remain scarce. In this study, 412 camel blood samples and 327 partially engorged ticks were collected and tested for the presence of Coxiella burnetii and/or related strains, and Rickettsiales bacteria. Coxiella burnetii was detected in 9 Hyalomma impeltatum and 3 H. dromedarii with an overall prevalence rate of 3.6% (12/327). Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii DNA was identified in 16 H. impeltatum and 10 H. dromedarii with an overall prevalence rate

The East Indies reptile tick Amblyomma helvolum Koch, 1844 (Acari: Ixodidae), taxonomy, biology and new host records, including the first record of human infestation.

Amblyomma helvolum is a widespread, generalist ectoparasite of reptiles in the oriental region, and has the potential to become highly invasive should it be inadvertently introduced outside its native range through the exotic pet trade. All life stages of A. helvolum are re-characterised morphologically and the first examples of nanism (dwarfism) and gynandromorphy (male and female tissue in one animal) for the species are described. Eighteen new hosts records are presented for A. helvolum, including the first case of human infestation. The taxonomy, distribution, ecology, phenology, disease a

Molecular and morphological identification of a reptile-associated tick, Amblyomma geoemydae (Acari: Ixodidae), infesting wild yellow-margined box turtles (Cuora flavomarginata) in northern Taiwan.

The genetic identity and morphological features of a reptile-associated tick, Amblyomma geoemydae, were examined for the first time in Taiwan. The key morphological characters of male and female Am. geoemydae were photographed using a stereo microscope. The genetic identity was analyzed by comparing the 16S mitochondrial DNA gene sequences obtained from 11 Taiwan Am. geoemydae ticks with other Amblyomma species and three Ixodes species as outgroups. All the Taiwan specimens were genetically affiliated to a monophyletic group of Am. geoemydae and could be discriminated from other Amblyomma spec

Comparing scapular morphology of Amblyomma sculptum and Amblyomma dubitatum nymphs allows a fast and practical differential diagnosis of ticks in highly infested areas with dominance of these two species.

Rickettsia rickettsii infection causes the highest human fatality rate among all Rickettsia species of the world and is endemic in Southeast Brazil. In this part of the country most human spotted fever cases are related to unnaturally high populations of ticks, usually a mix of two species, Amblyomma dubitatum Neumann and Amblyomma sculptum Berlese and their local host, capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris). At the same time, an increase in the number of SF notifications as well as its urbanization was observed, and a better characterization of disease epidemiology is mandatory for control meas

Control of Hyalomma lusitanicum (Acari: Ixodidade) Ticks Infesting Oryctolagus cuniculus (Lagomorpha: Leporidae) Using the Entomopathogenic Fungus Beauveria bassiana (Hyocreales: Clavicipitaceae) in Field Conditions.

Entomopathogenic fungi are widely used to control arthropods not just in agricultural settings but also in Veterinary Medicine and Public Health. These products have been employed to control tick populations and tick-borne diseases. The effectiveness of these control measures not only depends on the fungi, but also on the tick species and environmental conditions. In Mesomediterranean areas, tick species are adapted to extreme climatic conditions and it is therefore especially important to develop suitable tick control strategies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a ne

Interaction between anti-tick vaccine and a macrocyclic lactone improves acaricidal efficacy against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) (Acari: Ixodidae) in experimentally infested cattle.

The southern cattle fever tick (SCFT) Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, is considered the most important ectoparasite of livestock in the world because of high financial losses associated with direct feeding and transmission of the hemoparasites Babesia bovis, B. bigemina, and Anaplasma marginale. Unfortunately, SCFT in many parts of the world have evolved resistance to all market-available pesticides thus driving development of new control technologies. Vaccination against ticks using the tick gut protein Bm86 has been shown to be effective against acaricide-resistant ticks. This technique

Efficacy of hydroethanolic extract of Randia aculeata seed against the southern cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) on naturally infested cattle under field conditions.

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is a major problem of concern for cattle industry in tropical and subtropical areas. Control of cattle tick is based mainly on the use of chemical acaricides, which has contributed to the emerging problem of selection of resistant tick lineages. Plants have been used as an alternative to conventional acaricidal drugs. On the other hand, the acaricidal activity of hydroethanolic extract of Randia aculeata seed (EHRA) has been demonstrated against R. microplus under laboratory conditions. However, the utility of EHRA seed as a potential acarici

Efficacy of a water-based botanical acaricide formulation applied in portable spray box against the southern cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae), infesting cattle.

Ectoparasitism result in annual losses to livestock producers estimated to reach billions of dollars in tropical and subtropical parts of the world where the southern cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, is established because this invasive pest is also a vector of pathogens causing bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Reintroduction of R. microplus could be economically devastating for the cattle industry in the United States. Novel technologies are necessary to manage populations of R. microplus that are resistant to multiple classes of synthetic chemicals widely used as acaricid

Sequence variations in the Boophilus microplus Bm86 locus and implications for immunoprotection in cattle vaccinated with this antigen.

Cattle tick infestations constitute a major problem for the cattle industry in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Traditional control methods have been only partially successful, hampered by the selection of chemical-resistant tick populations. The Boophilus microplus Bm86 protein was isolated from tick gut epithelial cells and shown to induce a protective response against tick infestations in vaccinated cattle. Vaccine preparations including the recombinant Bm86 are used to control cattle tick infestations in the field as an alternative measure to reduce the losses produced by thi

Immunological control of ticks through vaccination with Boophilus microplus gut antigens.

The control of tick infestations and the transmission of tick-borne diseases remain a challenge for the scientific community. Traditional control methods have been only partially successful. Recently, vaccination with recombinant Boophilus microplus gut antigens has been shown to control tick infestations. Our Bm86-containing vaccine formulation (Gavac) has been effective for the control of artificial infestations of B. annulatus, B. decoloratus, and chemically sensitive and resistant B. microplus strains from Australia, Africa, America, and Iran. Preliminary results with Hyalomma spp. and Rhi

Incidents of high tick load in injured cheetahs after reintroduction into a tropical ecosystem.

Ectoparasites can severely impact wildlife species, both through their feeding behaviour and by facilitating secondary infestations or bacterial infections. Here, we report on two cases of periorbital damage caused by ixodid tick infestations in cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus), including a rare record of traumatic myiasis in wildlife. Both cheetahs were recently reintroduced to the Marromeu-Coutada Complex in Central Mozambique and had sustained relatively severe injuries. This ostensibly yielded them immunocompromised and thus more vulnerable to tick infestations, particularly when exposed to nov

Innate immunity in wooless lamb to larvae of Amblyomma cajennense tick (Fabricius, 1787) (Acari: Ixodidae).

The Cayenne tick Amblyomma cajennense infests preferably horses in its adult form but other mammal species in its immature stages and is the main vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the Brazilian spotted fever pathogen. As wooless lambs are often raised on pasture together with horses, an experiment was performed to investigate their possible acquisition of resistance to A. cajennense after experimental infestations. Seven naïve wooless lambs were infested thrice at 60 days interval with immature and adult instars of A. cajennense from a laboratory colony, the tick biotic potential being determin

Completing the cycle: Haemaphysalis elliptica, the vector of Babesia rossi, is the most prevalent tick infesting black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas), an indigenous reservoir host of B. rossi in South Africa.

In sub-Saharan Africa, virulent babesiosis in domestic dogs is primarily caused by Babesia rossi. Black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas), indigenous hosts of B. rossi, are the most likely reservoir from which B. rossi became established in domestic dog populations in South Africa. Haemaphysalis elliptica is the only confirmed vector transmitting B. rossi to domestic dogs; very little was known about the prevalence of H. elliptica infestation in black-backed jackal populations. All jackals (n = 9) from a site in Gauteng Province, South Africa, were infested with H. elliptica, which was also the
