PrEP risk perception and adherence among men who have sex with men: a prospective cohort study based on growth mixture model.

BACKGROUND: It can be considered that pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) risk perception is the negative experiences or concerns about taking PrEP. The aim of this study is to explore the longitudinal trajectory of PrEP risk perception among men who have sex with men (MSM) and its impact on adherence. METHODS: Data related to PrEP risk perception and adherence were derived from a prospective cohort study in Western China from 2013 to 2015. Subjects were categorized into the time-driven, event-driven and blank control groups. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) was administered to subjects in the

Increasing specificity in perceptual development: infants' detection of nested levels of multimodal stimulation.

This research assessed the development of infants' sensitivity to two nested amodal temporal relations in audible and visible events. Their detection of global temporal synchrony between visible and audible impacts and internal temporal structure nested within each impact specifying object composition (single versus compound objects) was assessed. Infants of 4, 7, and 11 weeks of age were habituated to a single and a compound object striking a surface and then received test trials depicting a change in synchrony or object composition. Results indicated an interaction between age and condition

Looking forward: an impaired ability in patients with schizophrenia?

When two visual stimuli occur within 8 to 17 ms of one another, subjects cannot tell they are asynchronous, yet recent results show they are not processed as simultaneous. Two spatially separate squares were presented at an interval ranging from 0 to 92 ms and remained on the screen until subjects responded. Subjects pressed a right or left response key according to the judged simultaneity/asynchrony of the stimuli. We evaluated the Simon effect, i.e., the tendency to press the key on the same side as the stimulus. We found an effect even when the squares were displayed on opposite sides of th

Response time and word recognition using a Modified-Rhyme monitoring task: list equivalency and time-order effects.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess list equivalency and time-order effects of word recognition scores and response time measures obtained using a digital recording of the Modified Rhyme Test (MRT) with a response time monitoring task (Mackersie, Neuman, & Levitt, 1999). DESIGN: Response times and percent correct measures were obtained from listeners with normal hearing using the MRT materials presented at a signal to noise ratio of +3 dB. Listeners were tested using a word-monitoring task in which six alternatives were presented in series and listeners pushed a button when the

Longitudinal Correlation of Frequency-to-Place Mismatch and Postoperative Speech Perception Outcomes in Cochlear Implant Recipients: Monosyllable, Consonant, Word, and Sentence.

Background/Objectives: Frequency-to-place mismatch between cochlear implant (CI) electrodes and cochlear tonotopy has been suggested to affect postoperative speech perception. This study aimed to examine the associations between frequency-to-place mismatch and speech perception outcomes across multiple linguistic levels in patients with CI and to assess how these associations change over time using postoperative computed tomography. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 44 postlingually deafened adults who underwent unilateral cochlear implantation with a Flex28 electrode by a sing

Moving through imagined space: Mentally simulating locomotion during spatial description reading.

Readers mentally simulate the perceptual and motoric elements related through text. Sound is one perceptual characteristic of these embodied simulations that has received little attention. Two experiments tested whether movement sounds (walking vs. running) or metronome pulses (fast vs. slow) would modulate reading speed and memory for two different types of spatial descriptions, route and survey. Route descriptions describe environments from a first-person, ground-level perspective whereas survey descriptions use an aerial overview perspective. Experiment 1 demonstrated that route description

Too Fast or Too Slow? Time and Neuronal Variability in Bipolar Disorder-A Combined Theoretical and Empirical Investigation.

Time is an essential feature in bipolar disorder (BP). Manic and depressed BP patients perceive the speed of time as either too fast or too slow. The present article combines theoretical and empirical approaches to integrate phenomenological, psychological, and neuroscientific accounts of abnormal time perception in BP. Phenomenology distinguishes between perception of inner time, ie, self-time, and outer time, ie, world-time, that desynchronize or dissociate from each other in BP: inner time speed is abnormally slow (as in depression) or fast (as in mania) and, by taking on the role as defaul

Space and Time in the Obsessive-Compulsive Phenomenon.

Following the tradition of researchers of the phenomenological-anthropological school such as Straus, von Gebsattel, Tellenbach, and Blankenburg, the author attempts to approach the obsessive-compulsive disorder from a phenomenological perspective. This means setting aside any previous ideas about the phenomenon in question, including genetic, neurobiological, and clinical-statistical considerations. He takes as his starting point a clinically typical case he studied and treated with psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy for many years. After delving briefly into the interesting psychodyna

Searching in dynamic displays: effects of configural predictability and spatiotemporal continuity.

A visual search task was used to probe how well attention can operate over a dynamically changing visual display. Participants searched for a target item among an array of distractor items while the items either shifted location several times per second or remained stationary. Not surprisingly, Experiment 1 showed that shifting display items slowed search. However, search was faster if the shift preserved the global, configural structure of the display. The results of Experiment 2 suggest that the benefit of maintaining configural structure comes from improved spatial predictability: Knowing w

Neural Mechanisms of Temporal Resolution of Attention.

The dynamic nature of the world requires that our visual representations are continuously updated. These representations are more precise if there is a narrow time window over which information is averaged. We assess the neural processes of visual updating by testing patients with lesions including inferior parietal cortex, control patients and healthy adults on a continuous visual monitoring task. In Experiment 1, observers kept track of the changing spatial period of a luminance grating and identified the final spatial period after the stimulus disappeared. Healthy older adults and neurologi

Sensory auditory interval perception errors in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a heritable condition associated with reading, visual and auditory deficits. Atypical processes involved in low-level sensory coding have been implicated. We tested the contribution made by auditory magnocellular function using a behavioural task which considered the temporal difference between pairs of identical sinewave tones. Adult undergraduates with an existing diagnosis of DD (n = 78) were compared with controls (n = 111) from the same population on error rates and response times at different interval durations. Error rates and response times increased in b

The construct of the multisensory temporal binding window and its dysregulation in developmental disabilities.

Behavior, perception and cognition are strongly shaped by the synthesis of information across the different sensory modalities. Such multisensory integration often results in performance and perceptual benefits that reflect the additional information conferred by having cues from multiple senses providing redundant or complementary information. The spatial and temporal relationships of these cues provide powerful statistical information about how these cues should be integrated or "bound" in order to create a unified perceptual representation. Much recent work has examined the temporal factors

Gap detection and ear of presentation: examination of disparate findings: re: Sininger Y.S., & de Bode, S. (2008). Asymmetry of temporal processing in listeners with normal hearing and unilaterally deaf subjects. Ear Hear 29, 228-238.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this Letter is to address incongruent findings reported in two current papers concerning an ear advantage for gap detection. The methodology of one of the studies was closely replicated in order to determine whether those data were confounded by a floor effect. A novel methodology not prone to a floor effect was also implemented to test for an ear advantage. DESIGN: In the replication of one of the studies, gap detection was measured for three stimuli: a 400-Hz tone, a 4000-Hz tone, and a broad band noise. Temporal gaps were positioned at the midpoints of 500-ms wav

Motion perception of saccade-induced retinal translation.

Active visual perception relies on the ability to interpret correctly retinal motion signals induced either by moving objects viewed with static eyes or by stationary objects viewed with moving eyes. A motionless environment is not normally perceived as moving during saccadic eye movements. It is commonly believed that this phenomenon involves central oculomotor signals that inhibit intrasaccadic visual motion processing. The keystone of this extraretinal theory relies on experimental reports showing that physically stationary scenes displayed only during saccades, thus producing high retinal

Abilities of normal and reading-disabled children to combine the visual and auditory modalities with dimensions of space and time.

The effects of various combinations of modalities with the dimensions of space and time on reproduction of stimulus patterns by 162 normal and 83 reading-disabled children aged 6 to 12 yr. was studied. Scores on three subtests with three different combinations of modalities with space and time dimensions were analyzed. They were visual temporal input, vocal temporal output; auditory temporal input, vocal temporal output; and visual spatial-temporal input, vocal temporal output. Visual spatial-temporal input was superior to the other subtests. Auditory temporal input was superior to visual temp

[Anorexia nervosa: lost time].

This article analyzes anorexia nervosa through the hypothesis that at its core lies a profound alteration in the perception of time. More specifically, it develops the idea that time has evaporated for the anorexic subject (who lives outside of time). This distortion leads to compulsive behaviors - such as feeling compelled to act urgently or avoiding empty spaces - which are an organized response to the inability to contextualize emotions within a temporal framework. Ultimately, the fundamental loss of the sense of time produces, in the person in remission, the feeling of having wasted their

Time matters for mental health: a systematic review of quantitative studies on time perspective in psychiatric populations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The ability to perform mental time travels and to develop representations of the past, the present, and the future is one of the distinctive capacities of the human mind. Despite its pronounced consequences for motivation, cognition, affect, and subjective well being, time perspective (TP) has been outside mainstream psychiatry and clinical psychology. We highlight the role of psychological-temporal phenomena in various disorders and summarize the current research on TP and psychopathology. RECENT FINDINGS: Our review ultimately comprised 21 articles, including 18 unique da

The relationship between the height dimension and numerical processing.

It is well documented that the ability to perceive numbers depends on perception of size. However, size consists of two different dimensions: height and width. In previous size-congruency experiments, the changes in the size dimension were confounded by changes in both the height and width dimensions. Hence, it is not clear if two digits that are equal in size but with different width and height produce a congruency effect and if so, which dimension (height or width) will be associated with quantity more prominently. In fact, different theories might predict different outcomes for the associat
