BACKGROUND: Cutaneous mycoses such as tinea capitis, onychomycosis and some cases of tinea corporis/cruris, and tinea pedis/manus require oral antifungal therapy. There is relatively limited data regarding the use of the newer oral antifungal agents, e.g. itraconazole, in the treatment of these mycoses in children.
OBJECTIVE: We wished to determine the efficacy and safety of itraconazole continuous therapy in the management of cutaneous fungal infections in children.
METHODS: Children with cutaneous mycoses were treated with itraconazole in an open-label manner in 4 studies. For tinea capiti

Tinea capitis is a fungal infection caused by dermatophytes, frequent in children but uncommon in the neonatal period. Kerion Celsi is the inflammatory manifestation of tinea capitis secondary to host immunologic responses and its occurrence in newborns is extremely infrequent. We describe three neonates with the diagnosis of kerion Celsi. The isolated dermatophytes were Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes in two patients and Trichophyton rubrum in the third. Both patients with T. mentagrophytes referred an indirect contact with rabbits and were successfully treated with systemic a

BACKGROUND: Large-scale studies performed outside the United States have demonstrated that most cases of onychomycosis and tinea pedis are caused by dermatophytes, primarily Trichophyton rubrum. However, other studies have suggested that yeasts and nondermatophytic molds may play a role, particularly in onychomycosis.
OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to determine the epidemiology of superficial fungal infections in a U.S. population.
METHODS: Fungal cultures were performed on patients with clinically suspected tinea cruris, tinea corporis, tinea capitis, tinea pedis, and onychomycosis.

Three boys from the same city, treated by the same dermatologist, developed tinea capitis. Two of them, 4 and 8 years old, underwent mycological diagnostic workup. However, no pathogens familiar in this country, such as Microsporum (M.) canis or Trichophyton (T.) tonsurans, were isolated, but instead that of a dermatophyte that has not been found in Germany for decades. Both dermatophyte isolates showed white-beige-brownish colonies with a flat, radiating edge and a central, verrucous curvature. The sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA confirmed the suspicion

BACKGROUND: At present, griseofulvin is the only licensed drug for oral treatment of dermatophyte infections in children.
OBJECTIVE: Children were treated with the fungicidal allylamine terbinafine. Efficacy and tolerability were evaluated.
METHODS: Fifteen children (14 months to 11 years old, below 40 kg body weight) with culture-confirmed tinea capitis or tinea corporis were systemically treated with terbinafine. Five children suffered from tinea capitis, 6 from tinea corporis and 4 from a combined infection of the scalp and body. As causing agents Trichophyton violaceum (5), Microsporum c

BACKGROUND: Tinea infections are superficial fungal infections caused by three species of fungi (i.e. Epidermophyton, Microsporum, and Trichophyton) collectively termed dermatophytes. Dermatophytes are fungi that cause skin, nail bed, and hair infections. These infections are classified based on infection site, including tinea pedis (foot), tinea corporis (body), tinea capitis (head), and tinea cruris (groin). Dermatophytes can spread by direct contact with other people (anthropophilic organisms), animals (zoophilic organisms), and soil (geophilic organisms), as well as indirectly from fomitie

BACKGROUND: There are no complete records on the prevalence of childhood skin diseases in Taiwan. We conducted a survey of infectious skin diseases and skin infestations among primary school children in Taitung County, which is located in southeastern Taiwan.
METHODS: From March 1998 through October 1998, a total of 3,029 students from four rural districts (Changbin, Yanping, Lanyu, and Dawu) and one urban area (Taitung City of Taitung County) were examined by dermatologists. Treatment and instructions for disease care were given immediately after the diagnosis of dermatoses, when appropriate

Trichophyton tonsurans is a fungal species that frequently causes tinea capitis (ringworm), a skin infection found in children. We report a case of unilateral blepharoconjunctivitis due to tinea capitis in a previously healthy 8-year-old boy. Although no case of blepharitis or follicular conjunctivitis due to T. tonsurans has been previously reported, the findings are consistent with other rare causes of ringworm blepharitis. Emerging or chronic fungal blepharitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unilateral follicular conjunctivitis.

We report a clinicomycologic study of eight culture-proven cases (diagnosed from May 1991 to June 1992) of Trichophyton tonsurans (T. tonsurans) infection in Tainan. T. tonsurans is the most common cause of tinea capitis in the United States and Mexico; Trichophyton violaceum (T. violaceum) is the most common cause in South Africa, India, Jordan and the Far East. To date, there has been no written report of infection caused by T. tonsurans in Taiwan. We report six cases of tinea capitis and two cases of tinea corporis which were proven to be T. tonsurans infection. In this small series, as in

Tinea infections are caused by dermatophytes, except for tinea versicolor, which is caused by yeasts in the Malassezia genus. If available, potassium hydroxide preparation should be performed to confirm diagnosis of tinea capitis or onychomycosis. In some cases, fungal culture, UV light examination, or periodic acid-Schiff stain can be helpful. Topical drugs are effective for tinea corporis, tinea cruris, and tinea pedis. Tinea incognito is an atypical presentation that usually requires systemic treatment. Management of tinea capitis always requires oral drugs. Oral drugs are preferred for ony

Dermatophytes represent the largest and most common group of fungal infections, impacting 25% of the global population. Among them, Trichophyton rubrum has emerged as the predominant species, responsible for a range of conditions such as tinea corporis, tinea pedis, onychomycosis, tinea cruris, and tinea manuum. Although dermatophyte incidence varies geographically, there is a noticeable rise in cases caused by T. indotineae, a strain that exhibits resistance to terbinafine. In the past decade zoophilic dermatophyte T. mentagophytes genotype VII (now known as T. interdigitale) gains a growing

Two hundred and eithteen cases of fungal skin infections were studied. Tinea cruris was most common (34.4%), followed by tinea corporis (23.8%) znd tinea pedis (21.6%). Tinea versicolor (8.7%) tinea manum (4.6%) tinea ungaium (3.7%) and tinea capitis (3.2%) were also seen. The male: female ratio was 4:1. The total isolates were 117. Trichophyton rubrum was the most common isolate (35%). closely followed by Epidermophyton floccosum (31.6%). Trichphyton mentagrophytes (17.9%), Malassezia furfur (13.7%) and Microsporum audouini (1.7%) were the only other isolates.

Two hundred and seventy nine patients suspected of having fungal lesions were examined. Skin scrapping, hair samples and nail clippings were collected from patients. Direct and culture examinations were performed for all samples. About 115 cases of examined subjects had dermatophytosis. Dermatophytosis occurred mainly in adults males (20-29 years). Tinea cruris (24.3%) was the most common type of dermatophytosis followed by tinea pedis (16.5%), tinea corporis (14.8%), tinea ungium (13%), tinea capitis (11.3%), tinea faciei (11.3%), tinea manuum (7%) and tinea barbae (1.7%). Twenty-five cases of dermatophytoses caused by Microsporum canis were encountered during a 3-year period (January 2008-December 2010). Their diagnosis was based on detection of fungal elements by direct microscopy and identification of M. canis by fungal culture. There were 17 women and 8 men ; they ranged in age from 4 to 85 years (mean, 34.6). The affected site was the head (n=5), face (n=8), neck (n=5), arm (n=8), leg (n=5), and trunk (n=5) ; exposed sites were those most often affected. A lone eruption was seen in 13 and multiple eruptions in 12 patients. The disease type was tinea corpori

INTRODUCTION: Hair loss is a common and distressing clinical complaint in the dermatology clinics. Common causes of hair loss in children include alopecia areata, tinea capitis, traction alopecia, and trichotillomania. Newly, trichoscopy allows differential diagnosis of hair loss in most cases and allows visualization of hair shafts and scalps without the need of removing hair.
OBJECTIVE: The main objective is to compare the different trichoscopic features of common causes of patchy hair in children loss including tinea capitis, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, and trichotillomania.

It is well known that radiation can induce meningiomas. These tumors usually arise in patients with a history of low-dose radiation to the scalp for treatment of tinea capitis or high-dose radiation for a previous brain tumor. Radiation-associated meningiomas (RAMs) morphologically resemble their spontaneously arising counterparts. However, RAMs frequently present a more malignant phenotype and, as such, are diagnosed as "atypical" or "aggressive" meningiomas and occur predominantly in younger patients. This paper describes six cases of radiation-associated intracranial meningiomas in patients

Scaling scalp diseases in 142 children were evaluated. Included were seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, tinea capitis, and psoriasis. Clinical signs were noted, and various treatments were then undertaken. Patients with seborrheic dermatitis responded well to treatment with antiseborrheic shampoo and topical corticosteroids. Atopic disease was more resistant to treatment, but did improve with less frequent shampooing and twice daily topical corticosteroid application. Selenium shampoo was a useful adjunct in the treatment of tinea capitis (cultures became negative at two weeks compared

Trichoscopy (hair and scalp dermoscopy) analyzes the structure and size of growing hair shafts, providing diagnostic clues for inherited and acquired causes of hair loss. Types of hair shaft abnormalities observed include exclamation mark hairs (alopecia areata, trichotillomania, chemotherapy-induced alopecia), Pohl-Pinkus constrictions (alopecia areata, chemotherapy-induced alopecia, blood loss, malnutrition), comma hairs (tinea capitis), corkscrew hairs (tinea capitis), coiled hairs (trichotillomania), flame hairs (trichotillomania), and tulip hairs (in trichotillomania, alopecia areata).
