High-resolution optical coherence tomography (HR-OCT) has transformed the diagnosis and management of ocular surface lesions. Providing a detailed cross-sectional view of the cornea and conjunctiva, HR-OCT can be used to identify characteristic features of various benign and malignant ocular surface lesions, aiding in their diagnosis and guiding treatment. When incorporated into an ophthalmology clinic, HR-OCT provides morphological images of lesions in a noninvasive means, akin to an "optical biopsy". The characteristic HR-OCT features of several lesions have been well described in the litera

Optical coherence tomography has become an indispensable diagnostic tool in ophthalmology for imaging the retina and the anterior segment of the eye. However, the imaging depth of optical coherence tomography is limited by light attenuation in tissues due to optical scattering and absorption. In this study of rabbit eye both ex vivo and in vivo, optical coherence tomography imaging depth of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye was extended by using optical clearing agents to reduce multiple scattering. The sclera, the iris, and the ciliary body were clearly visualized by direct appli

Defocus aberration in optical systems, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems employing Gaussian illumination, gives rise to the well-known compromise between transverse resolution and depth-of-field. This results in blurry images when out-of-focus, whilst other low-order aberrations (e.g., astigmatism, coma, etc.) present in both the OCT system and biological samples further reduce image resolution and contrast. Computational adaptive optics (CAO) is a computed optical interferometric imaging technique that modifies the phase of the OCT data in the spatial frequency domain to co

The article reviews the results of optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the retina and optic nerve in patients with keratoconus (KC). This research direction is premised by the possibility that changes in the retina and optic nerve are associated with KC, as well as the potential influence of significant changes in axial eye length, disorders of corneal refraction and increased level of aberrations on the quality of visualization of these ocular structures. Results of the conducted studies were conflicting, but in all they indicated a possibility of OCT findings to be altered in KC patients.

Limited cooperation and attention span often lead to poorly reliable assessments of visual acuity and visual fields in children, making diagnosis and monitoring of pediatric optic neuropathies challenging. As a noninvasive imaging modality, optical coherence tomography (OCT) could offer particular utility in this patient population. OCT provides high-resolution characterization of the optic nerve head, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, and cellular layers of the macula, all of which can be used to assess the severity of optic nerve disease qualitatively and quantitatively. Application o

Optic disc cavernous haemangiomas are either found incidentally or after presentation with vitreous haemorrhage. They are characterised by a cluster of grapes appearance to the multiple vascular saccules that make up the tumour. They are more often found in the retinal periphery but rarely occur at the optic disc. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging may be a useful non-invasive imaging modality to follow-up these lesions. We present the case of an asymptomatic 60-year-old lady referred from her optometrist with a lesion overlying the optic disc and the ensuing diagnosis of cavernous hae

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique routinely used in ophthalmology to visualize and quantify the layers of the retina. It also provides information on optic nerve head topography, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, and macular volume, which correlate with axonal loss. These measurements are of particular interest in optic neuropathies and in multiple sclerosis, and OCT parameters are now used as endpoints in neurologic clinical trials.

The adrenoleukodystrophies (ALDs) are a group of metabolic disorders characterised by the accumulation of very long-chain fatty acids in all tissues. The two most frequent ALD phenotypes are adult-onset adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN) and childhood cerebral ALD. Visual system involvement in the adult phenotype is well described as impairment of visual function and optic disc pallor on clinical examination accompanied by demyelination of the optic nerves seen on MRI. Thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer and ganglion cell death has been described in a neonatal form of ALD. Our patient provides

Optoretinography (ORG) is the optical measurement of changes in the retina in response to light stimulation. Adaptive optics optical coherence tomography (AOOCT) records photoreceptor ORGs by measuring the physical changes in their outer segment lengths in response to light stimulation. The main difficulty in recording these nanometer-scale changes is constant eye motion. Typically, fast volume acquisitions are used with offline spatial registration to compensate for the effect of eye motion. Here, we present an alternate solution whereby an adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO

We present a scheme for correction of x-y-separable aberrations in optical coherence tomography (OCT) designed to work with phase unstable systems with no hardware modifications. Our approach, termed SHARP, is based on computational adaptive optics and numerical phase correction and follows from the fact that local phase stability is sufficient for the deconvolution of optical aberrations. We demonstrate its applicability in a raster-scan polygon-laser OCT system with strong phase-jitter noise, achieving successful refocusing at depths up to 4 times the Rayleigh range. We also present in vivo

BACKGROUND: Optic disc melanocytoma (ODMC) was a benign pigmented intraocular tumor with the rare potential malignant transformation. This study was designed to evaluate tumor vasculature with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in ODMC.
METHODS: Eyes of healthy individuals in a control group and of patients with ODMC were imaged by OCTA systems operating at 840 nm wavelengths and examined. The main outcome measures were OCTA images, qualitative evaluation of optic disc and tumor vasculature, quantitative vascular density (VD) and perfusion density (PD).
RESULTS: One eye of ten n

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging tool routinely used in ophthalmology that provides cross-sectional images of the retina. Compression of the anterior visual pathways results in progressive thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular ganglion cell complex (GCC) and this review will highlight the utility of OCT in evaluating patients with this condition.
RECENT FINDINGS: The RNFL and macular GCC have been found to highly correlate with visual function in patients with compressive optic neuropathies. Preoperative RNFL and macular GCC
