BACKGROUND: Dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) is an extracellular matrix protein, which is highly expressed in odontoblasts and transiently expressed in presecretory ameloblasts. DSPP mutations were related to dentinogenesis imperfecta (DGI), some of which can be accompanied by amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). However, the mechanism underlying DGI and AI caused by DSPP mutations is still unclarified. This study aimed to reveal the molecular pathogenesis in a Chinese family with both DGI and AI caused by the DSPP splicing mutation. METHODS: One Chinese family with DGI and AI was recruited. Whole-e

Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) represents a group of hereditary conditions that manifest tooth enamel defects. Several causative mutations in the WDR72 gene have been identified and patients with WDR72 mutations have brown (or orange-brown) discolored enamel, rough enamel surface, early loss of enamel after tooth eruption, and severe attrition. Although the molecular function of WDR72 is not yet fully understood, a recent study suggested that WDR72 could be a facilitator of endocytic vesicle trafficking, which appears inconsistent with the previously reported cytoplasmic localization of WDR72. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between occlusal relationships during sleep bruxism (SB) and orofacial system diseases.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 50 young/middle-aged SB participants (mean age 29.5 years; 51.5% female) underwent polysomnographic for SB confirmation. Occlusal relationships were quantified using BruxChecker® scoring. Logistic regression models were used to assess relationships between occlusal relationships and dental/periodontal/temporomandibular disorders.
RESULTS: Group-grinding occlusion significantly predicted condylar displacement (Odds Ratio[OR] 10.

Environmental toxins are known to have many impacts on growth and development in humans, starting in utero. Alterations in amelogenesis, caused by chemical and physical trauma that occur during the antenatal, perinatal and postnatal time periods, may result in developmental defects in deciduous and permanent tooth enamel, as demonstrated in animal studies. These defects can be clinically visible and result in a variety of morphological and functional problems in the dentition. Since enamel does not remodel after formation, it may serve as a permanent record of insults during organ development.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the dental needs, demands and attitudes of a group of homeless people living in a hostel in Birmingham, many of whom had mental health problems.
BASIC RESEARCH DESIGN: Seventy subjects underwent a dental examination. The clinical criteria for the examination were especially selected to be simple and cause minimal discomfort to the subject, but be reproducible and cover the wide range of conditions expected to be found. Five of the subjects were selected to take part in semi structured interviews.
RESULTS: Thirty-one per cent of the subjects were found to be

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The effects of nonaxial forces on peri-implant bone loss have been investigated, mostly in reference to buccal mesiodistal implant angulations as potential risk indicators. However, when implant angulations are multidirectional, including the buccolingual aspect, evaluations of peri-implant bone loss based solely on mesiodistal measurements may skew the correlation.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the correlation between the magnitudes of multidirectional implant angulations and peri-implant crestal bone loss.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data

This in vitro study evaluated the wear effects of five posterior denture tooth materials on human enamel. The tooth specimen was cusp shaped and enamel specimen was formed as a 10 C 10 C 5 mm plate. All material-enamel combinations were tested using a machine designed to produce sliding contact 20 C 104 times at 60 cycles min-1 and a 4-mm sliding distance per stroke in the bucco-lingual direction under a load of 1 kg. Wear analysis was measured as the total height loss of each combination. In addition, the surface roughness (Ra) of each worn specimen was also evaluated. The least total height

While the gross dental anatomy of the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) has been described, the radiographic appearance of the dentition and the prevalence of dental and oral pathology have not been comprehensively evaluated. The objective of this study was to characterize the intraoral radiographic dental anatomy of the Virginia opossum and to determine the prevalence and distribution of anatomic variations and pathologic conditions affecting the dentition. Oral examination, standardized photography, and full-mouth intraoral dental radiography were performed on 25 deceased free-ranging

BACKGROUND: Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a relatively common problem which may affect the adult population. The etiology remains multi-factorial with interactions between stimulus and pre-disposing factors causing its aggravation.
AIM: To study the prevalence of DH and associated factors and also to find the association between various factors and DH.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out and a total of 5091 patients, both male and females, were evaluated through questionnaire. Out of the total only 1400 patients were included in the study and were further evalua

BACKGROUND: In general, mandibular canines have a single root and a single canal. The occurrence of two roots and two canals is a rare entity ranging from 1 to 5%. The anatomy of root canal morphology plays a decisive role in determining the conditions under which endodontic treatment can be performed effectively. Successful endodontic treatment comprises proper diagnosis, meticulous cleaning and shaping followed by three dimensional obturation. Failure to do so may lead to postoperative diseases, pain and further complications. This paper reports successful management of a mandibular canine w

The choice to use teeth for age determination is well accepted due to their longevity ability of being resilient to change. The total of 228 extracted teeth collected from the patients visited to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, NIMS Dental College, Jaipur, the teeth were without dental fillings and without and/or cavity selected. The known age was from 21 to 70 years with the average age of 43.46 years. For age estimation the method according to Gustafson was used. Every tooth was subject to longitudinal section of the midpulpal area. The following dental parameters were stud

The great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans) are our closest relatives. Despite the many similarities, there are significant differences in aging among apes, including the human ape. Common to all are dental attrition, periodontitis, tooth loss, osteopenia, and arthritis, although gout is uniquely human and spondyloarthropathy is more prevalent in apes than humans. Humans are more prone to frailty, sarcopenia, osteoporosis, longevity past reproductive senescence, loss of brain volume, and Alzheimer dementia. Cerebral vascular disease occurs in both humans and apes. Cardiovas

As part of an annual wellness evaluation, we performed oral and dental examination under general anesthesia in 7 zoo Bolivian squirrel monkeys aged 10 and 15 years, and 8 zoo black-tufted marmosets aged between 1 and 7 years. No oral discomfort was observed in any animal prior to the procedure. Apart from dilacerated roots of second mandibular incisor teeth in Bolivian squirrel monkeys and one case of presumably odontodysplasia in a black-tufted marmoset, no major variations in number and shape of the present teeth and roots were revealed. All 15 animals had gingivitis, but periodontitis was o

PURPOSE: Missing posterior teeth can decrease masticatory function and cause horizontal mastication deviation, i.e., mastication predominance. Mastication predominance may lead to abnormal tooth attrition and temporomandibular disorders. This study evaluated masticatory performance and mastication predominance in patients with missing posterior teeth to investigate effects of missing posterior teeth on masticatory performance and mastication predominance.
METHODS: Thirty volunteers with normal dentition (control group), 30 patients with unilateral missing posterior teeth (unilateral group), a

Excavations in later Middle Pleistocene levels at the Bau de l'Aubesier, Vaucluse, France yielded a maxillary molar (M(1) or M(2); Aubesier 10) and a partial mandible from the left C(1) alveolus to the right condylar base lacking the coronoid process (Aubesier 11). Dentally they are similar to other later Middle Pleistocene Europeans in dental dimensions and variable taurodontism (Aubesier 10 but not Aubesier 11). The small Aubesier 11 mandible exhibits a retreating symphyseal profile with a minimal tuber symphyseos, an anterior marginal tubercle at P(4)/M(1), the mental foramen at P(4)/M(1)-M

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although an interaction of malocclusion, parafunction, and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) can be inferred from the experience of daily practice, scientific evidence to corroborate this hypothesis does not exist. However, there are indications that TMD and headaches may be intertwined.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the presence or absence of an association of occlusal interferences, parafunction, TMD, or physiologic, muscular, or prosthodontic factors with the occurrence of headache.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a private practice population of
