Dental traumatology : official publication of International Association for Dental Traumatology2023eng
BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary teeth are frequently affected by traumatic dental injuries. Root fractures are rare and have a reported incidence of 2% in the primary dentition. Hence, there is limited evidence on this topic. This study aims to evaluate the risk of healing complications in primary teeth with root fracture and to identify possible sequelae in the permanent dentition following root fracture in the primary dentition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a cohort of 53 patients with 74 root fractured primary teeth. The standard follow-up program included clinical and radiog

Pulp canal obliteration (PCO) is a frequent finding associated with pulpal revascularization after luxation injuries of young permanent teeth. The underlying mechanisms of PCO are still unclear, and no experimental scientific evidence is available, except the results of a single histopathological study. The lack of sound knowledge concerning this process gives rise to controversies, including the most suitable denomination. More than a mere semantic question, the denomination is an important issue, because it reflects the nature of this process, and directly impacts the treatment plan decision

An 8-year-old boy sustained avulsion of his upper right maxillary central incisor and lateral luxation of his upper left maxillary incisors. Subsequently, the upper right maxillary central incisor developed replacement resorption, and both upper left maxillary incisors developed pulpal canal obliteration. In the ankylosed tooth, decoronation procedure was performed, and in the 44-month follow-up period the involved alveolar site showed vertical apposition of bone and continuing replacement resorption. Decoronation is a surgical procedure that allows preservation of the bone volume for the futu

Complete intrusion of a primary anterior tooth may initially be diagnosed as an avulsion injury. The importance of a correct first clinical and radiological examination of a young patient who has sustained trauma to the anterior primary teeth is stressed in this article. This issue is illustrated by a case presentation where a 3-year-old girl had a delayed treatment of 5 days after a primary incisor was fully impacted by a fall trauma into the nasal cavity. This was due to an incomprehensible clinical and radiological examination by the first examining dentist. The impacted tooth was later rem

A case report of treatment for a traumatically intruded maxillary central incisor is described. An attempt at accelerating eruption via surgical exposure of the embedded tooth was only partially successful. Orthodontic extrusion of the partially erupted tooth brought the tooth into correct position.

Objective: This controlled study investigated the occurrence of sequelae to permanent successors (SPS) following traumatic dental injury in primary teeth (TDIp). Additionally, this study evaluated whether TDIp is a risk factor for SPS, with a focus on an association between SPS and the child's age and type of trauma. Materials and methods: The trauma group (TG) consisted of permanent teeth, whose antecessors had suffered TDIp, in a population of children with complete eruption of permanent teeth. The control group (CG) consisted of permanent teeth from the same individuals, whose antecessors h

Avulsive trauma to permanent teeth is a critical dental emergency, particularly in children and adolescents, where timely intervention is essential for preserving aesthetics, function, and psychological well-being. This scoping review evaluates clinical adherence to the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines for the replantation of avulsed permanent teeth, with a specific focus on the 2012 and 2020 versions. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science yielded 812 records, from which 92 studies were included after rigorous screening. Findings indicat

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic treatment in patients with traumatized teeth is a condition that needs good planning in order to achieve satisfactory results.
OBJECTIVE: To discuss approaches to orthodontic treatment of malocclusions associated with trauma followed by avulsion of anterior teeth, reimplanted after a short period of time.
CASE REPORT: The treatment started with the distalization of upper posterior teeth, with the aid of mini-implants and sliding jigs, followed by the inclusion of anterior teeth in the arch, followed by intrusion of these teeth.
RESULTS: With the treatment, improved

The aim of this case report is to describe the treatment of a 9-year-old patient who suffered external root resorption of the permanent maxillary left lateral incisor following reimplantation of the avulsed left central and lateral incisors. Sixteen days after reimplantation and splinting of the incisors in a hospital emergency department, the patient was brought to the pediatric department of a dental school for further treatment. Root canal access was created in the maxillary left lateral and central incisors, and calcium hydroxide paste was used as intracanal dressing. At the 5-month follow

This case report presents use of a custom trauma splint that was fabricated to prevent excessive thumb-sucking trauma to a previously-subluxated permanent incisor. A 10-year-old boy was referred to the clinic 10 days after falling in the schoolyard that resulted in a trauma to his maxillary left central incisor. The extent of clinical mobility stipulated fabrication of a custom trauma splint that would prevent further trauma to the incisor caused by excessive pressure of the thumb. A light-cured resin composite splint, covering the incisal edges of the central incisors and labial surfaces of t

This case report describes a case of intrusion of the right mature permanent central incisor. After gingivectomy and endodontic treatment with changes of the intracanal dressing (calcium hydroxide paste) every 30 days, spontaneous re-eruption was observed. We conclude that waiting for spontaneous re-eruption associated with gingivectomy and endodontic treatment is an alternative treatment for severe intrusive luxations in mature permanent teeth.

Dental emergencies are common during childhood and typically occur due to trauma or infection. The current evidence on managing dental injuries is from a dental perspective, with limited information on treating pediatric dental injuries in medical settings. Proper treatment of infection, correct storage, prompt repositioning, and replantation are essential for successful outcomes, as supported by the latest evidence-based guidelines. Pediatric patients have a better prognosis when proper treatment is provided without delay. Understanding potential issues enables providers to assess the severit

BACKGROUND/AIM: The survival of an avulsed tooth highly depends on the emergency management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of ankylosis for avulsed human teeth stored in saliva preceded by various dry storage conditions prior to replantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data include 74 patients (54 male and 20 female) with 89 avulsed and replanted teeth (16 immature teeth, 73 mature teeth). Patient ages ranged from 6 to 36 years (median: 13.0 years). All teeth were stored in saliva before replantation. Treatment and follow-up were performed according to a standardized procedure. Fo

PURPOSE: Euro-Collins solution was developed for the preservation of organs for transplantation, whose characteristics have raised interest for its use as a storage medium for avulsed teeth before replantation. This study evaluated histologically and morphometrically the healing process of dog teeth replanted after storage in Euro-Collins solution or bovine milk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty roots of 4 young adult mongrel dogs were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n = 20) and the root canals were instrumented and obturated with gutta-percha and a calcium hydroxide-based sealer. After 2 weeks,

The Editorial Board of the Journal of Endodontics has developed a literature-based study guide of topical areas related to endodontics. This study guide is intended to give the reader a focused review of the essential endodontic literature and does not cite all possible articles related to each topic. Although citing all articles would be comprehensive, it would defeat the idea of a study guide. This section will present classification of traumatic injuries, crown/root and root fractures, canal obliteration secondary to traumatic injuries, root resorption secondary to traumatic injuries (inter

This report presents 5 cases of intrusive luxation in immature permanent central incisors. The intruded incisors, with careful monitoring, were allowed to spontaneously re-erupt, which avoided the need to reposition the tooth either orthodontically or surgically. All of the teeth re-erupted spontaneously in a few months. The root development continued in all of the cases and all pulps remained vital. There were no other signs of pulpal and/or periapical pathology. It can be concluded that intruded immature permanent teeth can spontaneously re-erupt, conserve their vitality, and continue their

Parents of preschool children with avulsed primary incisors may request replantation. Although dental textbooks uniformly recommend that primary teeth not be replanted, some case reports advocate the procedure. This review of case reports identifies a number of pathological outcomes of replantation and provides information for clinicians and parents on the risks that may accompany replantation.

Oral trauma continues to be a common pediatric emergency, accounting for 150 emergency room dental consultations per year at Children's Hospital in Boston. Children between the ages of 18 months and 2.5 years and between 8 and 11 years are most at risk. Recent advances in the management of these dental emergencies may help children and their families avoid the psychological and financial cost of infection or loss of primary and permanent teeth. Treatment of avulsions in the young permanent dentition remains a common problem, and a universally accepted approach to its management is still evolvi

The authors described a personal treatment method for the traumatic root fractures in the permanent incisors, and the review of their results after 15 years. The method consists in the good immobilisation and fixation of the injured teeth, with orthodontic bands and brackets and arch wire. They put this orthodontic contention for one-two months, and after x-ray control and pulp vitality checks, removed it. They presented also the use of the same technique in the luxations of permanent incisors, and compared the results. In the root fractures the authors obtain good long distance results, such
