Differential diagnosis between calcifying odontogenic cyst and adenomatoid odontogenic tumor by computed tomography images.

OBJECTIVES: Calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC) and adenomatoid odontogenic tumors (AOT) have similar radiographic findings. We examined the radiographic and computed tomography (CT) images of patients histologically diagnosed with COC or AOT and identified their characteristic findings. METHODS: The subjects included 12 patients histologically diagnosed with COC or AOT (one female and five males per group), who underwent CT at our hospital between Nov 1998 and Jun 2019. The location of the lesion, impacted tooth, bone expansion, root resorption, tooth migration, calcified body, and presence o

Coronectomy of the lower third molar is safe within the first 3 years.

PURPOSE: There is no long-term evaluation on the safety of coronectomy of the lower third molar. The aim of this study was to investigate the 3-year morbidity of coronectomy of the lower third molars and to monitor the behavior and migration pattern of the retained roots after coronectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study. Patients with lower third molars with specific radiographic sign(s) showing proximity of the roots to the inferior alveolar nerve who underwent coronectomy in a previous randomized clinical trial were reviewed postoperatively in the first week and

Orthodontic Compression Enhances Macrophage M2 Polarization via Histone H3 Hyperacetylation.

Orthodontic tooth movement is a complex periodontal remodeling process triggered by compression that involves sterile inflammation and immune responses. Macrophages are mechanically sensitive immune cells, but their role in orthodontic tooth movement is unclear. Here, we hypothesize that orthodontic force can activate macrophages, and their activation may be associated with orthodontic root resorption. After force-loading and/or adiponectin application, the migration function of macrophages was tested via scratch assay, and Nos2, Il1b, Arg1, Il10, ApoE, and Saa3 expression levels were detected

Bisphosphonate-induced reactive oxygen species inhibit proliferation and migration of oral fibroblasts: A pathogenesis of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

BACKGROUND: The onset mechanism for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) has been reported, with a focus on bone remodeling, biofilm formation, and epithelial cell proliferation and migration. However, the involvement of stromal cells, especially fibroblasts, in the oral cavity is unclear. Therefore, this study was focused on how bisphosphonates (BPs) affect orthotopic periodontal ligament fibroblasts from the viewpoint of oxidative stress compared with ectopically obtained fibroblasts. METHODS: Normal human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPdLFs) and normal human dermal

Alternative treatment approach for anterior subgingival dental lesions: Forced eruption using attractive magnets.

This article reports the use of a minimally invasive technique to address a challenging clinical problem in the esthetic zone. The clinical steps taken to achieve forced eruption by 1.5-2.0 mm of a maxillary central incisor that presented minimal clinical crown because of caries are described in detail. This subsequently allowed the successful placement of a crown. The tooth was extruded by forces generated between 2 neodymium-iron-boron magnets. One was affixed to the palatal surface of the tooth, and the other was embedded in a thermoformed splint. Weekly circumferential supracrestal fiberot

[The implant/tissue interface in a clinical perspective].

For a proper insight in the implant/tissue interface of permucosal oral implants it is good to refer to the tooth/periodontium interface. Although there are evident differences such as the lack of a periodontal ligament with its possibilities for eruption and migration and elaborate neural endings, it seems that classical periodontal parameters are the yardstick to discriminate failure from success of oral implants. Long cone radiographs and mobility assessment seem the only available clinical tools to detect a scar tissue interposition. On the other hand, their discrimination power is insuffi

Homologies of the toothcomb.

A recently described juvenile specimen of Avahi was supposed to show that indriines have an unreplaced deciduous canine and that the indriine toothcomb was composed only of incisors. To the contrary, this specimen demonstrates quite dramatically a growth phenomenon earlier discussed: in indriines, the anteriormost of the four deciduous lower teeth posterior to the toothcomb migrates mesially toward the toothcomb (Schwartz, '74). In this particular Avahi, this tooth has even become associated with the toothcomb. The alignment of this tooth with the toothcomb is a strictly impermanent situation

Junctional epithelium in rats is characterized by slow cell proliferation.

BACKGROUND: The integrity of junctional epithelium (JE) and a firm epithelial adhesion to the tooth surface are maintained by the balance between cell proliferation and cell death. Maintaining the JE structure is essential for the protection of periodontal connective tissues against oral microbes. In this study, the proliferative activity and the expression of caspase 3, a cysteine protease associated with cell death, were studied in rat JE and other epithelial structures during molar tooth development. METHODS: Fourteen rats aged 10 to 70 days were injected with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). Sam

Alpha11 beta1 integrin-dependent regulation of periodontal ligament function in the erupting mouse incisor.

The fibroblast integrin alpha11beta1 is a key receptor for fibrillar collagens. To study the potential function of alpha11 in vivo, we generated a null allele of the alpha11 gene. Integrin alpha11(-/-) mice are viable and fertile but display dwarfism with increased mortality, most probably due to severely defective incisors. Mutant incisors are characterized by disorganized periodontal ligaments, whereas molar ligaments appear normal. The primary defect in the incisor ligament leads to halted tooth eruption. alpha11beta1-defective embryonic fibroblasts displayed severe defects in vitro, charac

The influence of alveolar bone grafting on the orthodontic and prosthodontic treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate.

The introduction of mixed dentition bone grafting of alveolar clefts means that the alveolar process can be fully restored, permitting adjacent teeth to migrate or be orthodontically moved into the grafted bone. Thus a complete dental arch can be obtained without prosthodontics in the great majority of patients. In addition, oral-nasal fistulae are closed, mucosal recesses eliminated (facilitating oral hygiene) and the long-term periodontal health of the teeth adjacent to the former cleft is improved. Alveolar bone grafting with subsequent orthodontic treatment, together with advances in denta

Subgingival plaque and loss of attachment in periodontosis as observed in autopsy material.

Histologic sections from six autopsy cases which from a clinical point of view fitted into the criteria of periodontosis were examined with the aim at evaluating the role of subgingival plaque in the etiology of the loss of attachment in this condition. The following pertinent observations were made: 1. The subgingival plaque in most instances was not calcified to form calculus. 2. The thickness of the subgingival plaque varied between 20 and 200 mu (0.02-0.2 mm). 3. Where loss of attachment had taken place, the distance from the most apical part of the subgingival plaque to the most apical po

Methyltransferase 1-mediated tRNA N7-methylguanosine modification regulates dentin formation during tooth root development via p53 signaling.

tRNA N7-methylguanosine (m7G) is one of the most abundant epigenetic modifications in mammals, which is catalyzed by the methyltransferase 1-WD repeat-containing protein 4 (METTL1-WDR4) complex. Missense mutations in WDR4 have been linked to primordial dwarfism, which shows severe craniofacial developmental deformities including small teeth, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, we explore the effect of m7G modification on dentin formation during tooth root development. METTL1 was actively expressed in mice developing tooth roots, and its expression became unde

Management strategies for unanticipated remnants following tooth extraction: A case report.

RATIONALE: Tooth extraction is a common oral surgical procedure, yet rare complications such as retained tooth fragments may occur. These remnants - including crown fragments, root tips, or other materials - can delay healing, provoke infection, and impair oral function, posing challenges for clinicians. Because fragments may migrate extra-socket and be masked by fibrotic tissue, routine examination can be falsely negative and diagnosis delayed. This case report clarifies when and why early CBCT is warranted to localize retained crown fragments and demonstrates a micro-incision retrieval strat

Mandibular lateral incisor-canine transposition, concomitant dental anomalies, and genetic control.

Mandibular lateral incisor-canine (Mn.I2.C) transposition is a rare developmental disturbance of tooth order characterized by positional interchange of the two teeth. In children with Mn.I2.C anomaly, the mandibular lateral incisor shows distal ectopic eruption and the adjacent canine subsequently erupts mesial to it. A sample of 60 orthodontic patients with Mn.I2.C transposition was studied using roentgenograms taken at the time of diagnosis. Two age-related phenotypes of the anomaly were identified: early-stage (median age, 9 years) and mature-stage (median age, 12 years). Mn.I2.C transposit

Mesial migration of lower molars in relation to facial growth and eruption.

Mesial migration of teeth in the buccal segments is a well recognised phenomenon in the human dentition. Its aetiology is not fully understood. It has been suggested that it is, to some extent, dependent on growth changes in the lower face. The purpose of this investigation was to examine mesial movement of first molars in the intact lower arch in relation to the amount and direction of facial growth and eruption of teeth. Mesial migration of lower first molars between 13 and 18 years was measured on 60 degrees cephalograms of 22 males and 29 females with intact lower arches. Correlation analy

Concomitant dilaceration, transposition, and intraosseous migration: report of a patient treated with maxillary canine-central incisor substitution.

This case report describes the multidisciplinary treatment of a male with a dilacerated maxillary left central incisor and transposition of the ipsilateral maxillary canine and lateral incisor. The initial treatment plan involved removal of the dilacerated incisor with mechanical eruption and alignment of the ectopic left canine, aiming to substitute the lateral incisor for the missing central incisor. However, the plan was modified to include eruption of the canine in the central incisor region in response to progressive ectopic development and mesial transmigration of the maxillary left cani

An atypical form of necrotizing periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis/periodontitis are considered necrotizing periodontal diseases. This case report presents an atypical form of necrotizing periodontitis, which does not fit into this classification. METHODS: A 12-year-old child was referred to our clinic for gingival inflammation, extensive alveolar bone loss, and tooth mobility. Clinical and microbiologic examinations were carried out, and radiographs were taken. Clinical examination revealed soft and hard tissue destruction up to the mucogingival junction at the right maxillary premolar and mandibular incisors. U

Cosmetic rehabilitation following successful treatment of aggressive periodontitis.

UNLABELLED: With advances in periodontal therapy, many sufferers from aggressive periodontitis are retaining their teeth after successful treatment. This presents the practitioner with aesthetic and restorative challenges in these relatively young patients. Lifelong motivation is essential to the supportive therapy for these patients, and the maintenance of good aesthetics, combined with biologically acceptable corrective therapy, may help maintain a high level of motivation. Any treatment provided must naturally be conducive to maintaining long-term dental and periodontal health. This paper a

[Root reactions during treatment with indomethacin in the rat].

During the course of a study on the effect of indomethacin, an inhibitor of PG-synthesis, on the alveolar bone remodeling associated with the drift of the rat molar, the root profile appeared altered. The perimeter of the buccal root of the lower first molar had increased during the 7-day experimental period (+9%; p less than 0.02) in the treated group. This was due to an increase in the extent of root resorption lacunae (+99%; p less than 0.05). They were located in the disto-buccal aspect of the root, i.e., facing the alveolar wall remodeling area. The periodontal ligament width was also inc
