BACKGROUND: Low- level laser therapy has been used to stimulate the orthodontic tooth movements (OTM) previously. Furthermore, in the orthodontic treatments accompanying tooth extractions, the adjacent teeth move towards the extraction sites and close the space in some cases. Then, the adjacent tooth movements must be prevented in the treatments requiring space. Laser stimulates and at some doses decelerates tooth movement; it also improves healing process and enhances osteogenesis. Hence, it can prevent movement by osteogenesis adjacent to the tooth. The present study investigated the effects

Tooth resorption, a common feline dental problem, is often initiated at the cemento-enamel junction and hence is called cat 'neck' lesion. Studies have demonstrated that osteoclasts/odontoclasts are increased and activated at resorption sites, and that areas of resorption are partly repaired by formation of tissues resembling bone, cementum, and possibly dentin. However, the cellular/molecular mechanisms/factors involved in resorption and repair are unknown. In this study of tissues from cats with 'neck' lesions, we used specific antibodies and immunohistochemical analyses to examine adhesion

Feline tooth resorption (odontoclastic resorptive lesion) is a common and important issue in veterinary dentistry. This study aimed to analyse the disease's severity and correlation with clinical information in the population of feline patients in Poland in the area of Lower Silesia. An analysis of the clinical charts of 174 cats with dental problems, which were diagnosed as tooth resorption, was conducted. The gender and breed had no influence on the disease severity, but the disease progressed with age. The lesions were mostly encountered within the third and fourth maxillary premolars (107,

Dental disorders are a serious health problem in equine medicine, their early recognition benefits the long-term general health of the horse. Most of the initial signs of Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH) syndrome concern the alveolar aspect of the teeth, thus, the need for early recognition radiographic imaging. This study is aimed to evaluate the applicability of entropy measures to quantify the radiological signs of tooth resorption and hypercementosis as well as to enhance radiographic image quality in order to facilitate the identification of the signs of E

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between root resorption (RR) and bone turnover in two different types of tooth movement in dogs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 16 dogs in two different groups were used. Tooth movement of dog premolars resulted from approximately 200 g of force. Histomorphometric analysis of premolar roots was assessed after 4 and 12 weeks of tooth movement by comparing nonresorptive to resorptive surfaces.
RESULTS: Histomorphometric analysis indicated a significant decrease in the bone formation rate in the root resorptive areas, which resulted in decreased bon

Osteoclastic bone resorption has recently been implicated in the tooth formation and eruption in alveolar bone. Cathepsin K (CK) is a cysteine proteinase expressed predominantly in osteoclasts and is believed to play a critical role in degradation of bone matrix proteins. Here we present evidence that the alveolar bone resorption is essential for the tooth formation and that eruption proceeds normally in CK-deficient (CK-/-) mice. Radiographic and histological analyses revealed that the alveolar bone from these animals had no significant abnormalities during the tooth development between 5 and

The aim of this clinical and histological study was to compare the effects of two controlled, continuous forces of 50 cN (approximately 50 g) and 100 cN (approximately 100 g) on tooth movement and root resorptions. The patients, consisting of 32 individuals, 14 boys and 18 girls (mean age 13.1 years), were divided into four groups of eight individuals. The experimental periods were 4 and 7 weeks. In this investigation, designed as an inter-individual study, only the maxillary first premolar on the right side was utilized. The test tooth was buccally moved by means of a fixed orthodontic applia

Root resorption associated with tooth movement is an unsolved problem in orthodontics. If such root resorption could be prevented, it would be an important contribution toward reducing risk factors in orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the topical administration of a bisphosphonate, risedronate, which is known to be a potent blocker of bone resorption, on root resorption during tooth movement and on the repair of the resorbed root surface after tooth movement in rats. In the first experiment, both the right and left upper first molars were moved bucc

BACKGROUND: Tooth resorption (TR) is a prevalent dental condition with under-investigated systemic implications, particularly regarding renal health. This study aimed to evaluate renal biomarkers, specifically symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), and the association between TR and blood parameters.
METHODS: Thirty-six cats (24 TR; 12 controls) were evaluated via intraoral radiography and blood analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify independent predictors for TR, adjusting for age and sex.
RESULTS: Tooth resorption was diagnosed in 66.7% of the cats, predominantly

Replacement resorption is a rare pathological condition in permanent teeth, characterized by progressive substitution of root dentin with bone tissue, typically following traumatic injuries. This case report presents an unusual occurrence of replacement resorption in the mesial root of the mandibular right first permanent molar (46) in an eight-year-old boy with no documented history of trauma, associated with non-syndromic agenesis of multiple permanent teeth (15, 34, 35, 44, 45). Despite the reserved long-term prognosis, conservative endodontic management was pursued due to the significant t

BACKGROUND: Equine dental diseases significantly impact a horse's overall health, performance and quality of life. They can result in secondary infections and digestive disturbances, potentially leading to colic. A recently described disease affecting the incisors of horses is equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH). Understanding EOTRH is crucial for early diagnosis, effective management and prevention of its severe consequences.
OBJECTIVES: To determine proteomic differences in incisor cementum in horses with and without clinical EOTRH.
STUDY DESIGN: Comparative a

Bone-modifying agents (BMA) such as bisphosphonates and denosumab are frequently used for the treatment of bone metastases, osteoporosis, and multiple myeloma. BMA may lead to anti-resorptive agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ). This study aimed to clarify the risk factors for and probabilities of developing ARONJ after tooth extraction in patients undergoing BMA therapy. In this study, the records of 505 target sites of 302 patients undergoing BMA who presented with mandibular fractures at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Kagawa Prefectural Central Hospital, from M

Activation of the receptor activator of NF-κB (RANK) is a crucial step in osteoclastogenesis. Loss- and gain-of-function mutations in the Rank gene cause, respectively, osteopetrosis and several forms of extensive osteolysis. Tooth and alveolar bone alterations are associated with these pathologies but remain to be better characterized. The aim of the present study was to establish the tooth and alveolar bone phenotype of a transgenic mouse model of RANK over-expression in osteoclast precursors. Early tooth eruption and accelerated tooth root elongation were observed subsequent to an increase

Osteopontin (OPN) is a major non-collagenous bone matrix protein implicated in the regulation of cell function. Although OPN is rich in the cementum of the tooth, the significance of OPN in this tissue is not understood. Tooth root resorption is the most frequent complication of orthodontic tooth movement (TM). The objective of this study was to examine the pathophysiological role of OPN in cementum of the tooth root. For this purpose, the upper right first molar (M1) in OPN-deficient and wild-type (WT) mice was subjected to mechanical force via 10 gf NiTi coil spring while the left side molar

OBJECTIVE: To establish the permanent tooth germ missing animal model for future research on the root resorption of deciduous tooth in the absence of permanent tooth germ.
METHODS: The permanent tooth germ missing animal model was established by surgical removal of the permanent tooth buds in a male 11-week-old Beagle dog. Root resorption of the deciduous teeth without permanent successors was observed by taking periapical films periodically, and compared with physiological root resorption. Once the sign of root resorption of the deciduous teeth without permanent successors was detected on rad

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess whether the severity of orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) and alveolar bone loss follows a parallel pattern during orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 62 patients treated with standardized 0.022-in McLaughlin, Bennett, and Trevisi fixed appliances and nonextraction protocols. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on the presence (group 1, n = 31) or absence (group 2, n = 31) of posttreatment root resorption. In both groups, mesial and distal alveolar bone levels were measured on panoramic rad
