Maternal depressive symptoms, child maltreatment, and children's externalizing problems: A three-wave longitudinal study from preschool to school age.

Although the bidirectional relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and children's externalizing problems has been widely explored, the underlying mechanisms driving this cycle remain unclear. Specifically, the mediating role of child maltreatment-a known detriment to both maternal mental health and child development-has not been elucidated within this transactional dynamic. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationships among maternal depressive symptoms, children's externalizing problems, and child maltreatment from the preschool to school-age periods. Data were draw

Intersecting Vulnerabilities: Depression, Suicidality, and HIV Risk Among Young Mothers in South Africa.

Many African women who are pregnant or parenting face intersecting challenges including intimate partner violence, unplanned pregnancies, and motherhood-related stresses that heighten vulnerability to poor mental health. Depression and suicidal ideation are associated with behaviors that increase HIV risk, yet limited research has explored these relationships in African contexts. This study examined associations between depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and sexual risk behaviors among unemployed young women aged 19-24 years in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Baseline data were collected bet

Displacement Stressors and Sexual and Reproductive Health Challenges for Internally Displaced Young Adults in Northern Mozambique: A Qualitative Study Using the Socio-ecological Framework for Refugee Distress.

An ongoing insurgency in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, has displaced over one million people since 2017. Young adults in Mozambique have the greatest risk for HIV. Young adults can be impacted by a host of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges and poor access to care yet less is understood about how exposure to conflict and forced displacement affects SRH. Our qualitative study facilitated focus groups and stakeholder interviews to query urban internally displaced persons, including young adults, and stakeholders involved in the humanitarian response to understand views on the impact of

Social Anhedonia Accounts for Greater Variance in Internalizing Symptoms than Autism Symptoms in Autistic and Non-Autistic Youth.

PURPOSE: Social anhedonia is a transdiagnostic trait that reflects reduced pleasure from social interaction. It has historically been associated with autism, however, very few studies have directly examined behavioral symptoms of social anhedonia in autistic youth. We investigated rates of social anhedonia in autistic compared to non-autistic youth and the relative contributions of autism and social anhedonia symptoms to co-occurring mental health. METHODS: Participants were 290 youth (Mage=13.75, Nautistic=155) ranging in age from 8 to 18. Youth completed a cognitive assessment and a diagnos

Sex Under the Influence of Drugs Among People Who Use Drugs in Cambodia: Findings From a National Survey.

Studies in drug use settings rarely use sex under the influence of drugs as an indicator of sexual risk behaviors. This study explored the prevalence of sex under the influence of drugs and its correlates among people who use drugs (PWUD) in Cambodia. We included 1147 PWUD from 12 provinces in this study. A multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with sex under the influence of drugs. Of the total, 39.7% reported having had sex under the influence of drugs in the past three months. After adjustment, sex under the influence of drugs was significantly a

Stressful life events and social capital during the early phase of COVID-19 in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: A novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was reported in Wuhan, China late December 2019. The disease has as of the end of March 2020, affected over 35 countries (with over 570,000 cases and 26,000 deaths) worldwide. This includes the U.S., where cases are increasing by the thousands every day (100,000 cases with 1500 deaths as of April 2020). We set out to investigate new or increased stressful life events (SLEs) as a result of this pandemic in the U.S. METHODS: In this exploratory qualitative study, we examined new or heightened SLEs during an active phase of this outbreak. We use

BIARAM: A process for analyzing correlated brain regions using association rule mining.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Because examining correlated (vs. individual) brain activity is a superior method for locating neural correlates of a stimulus, using a network approach for analyzing brain activity is gaining interest. In this study, we propose and illustrate the use of association rule mining (ARM) to analyze brain regions that are activated simultaneously. ARM is commonly used in marketing and other disciplines to help determine items that might be purchased together. We apply this technique toward identifying correlated brain regions that may respond simultaneously to specific sti

Transgender Women in Clinical Trials of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis.

Lessons were learned with trans women who participated (as volunteers and investigators) in trials of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Trans women are not men. Compared with men who have sex with men, trans women trial participants were more likely to be involved with transactional sex, had more sexual partners, and were less likely to have PrEP medications detected in blood. Trans women define themselves differently in different cultures. One best practice is to ask at least 2 gender questions: sex assigned at birth and current gender. More information is needed to fully situate PrEP effi

A Study of Variability in Brief Assessment of Transactional Success in Aphasia Story Retelling Performance Using Generalizability Theory.

PURPOSE: This study used generalizability theory (G-theory) to assess the reliability of the Brief Assessment of Transactional Success in aphasia (BATS) and whether reliability can be maintained with more efficient study designs. METHOD: G-theory was applied to a data set from BATS test development, where story retells were scored using main concept analysis. Linear mixed-effects models were used to estimate the proportion of variability in scores attributable to storyteller (a person with aphasia [PWA] or familiar/unfamiliar conversation partner [CP]), rater (human or automated), and stimuli

First-time postpartum motherhood during armed conflict: experiences, challenges, coping, and support needs among women with mobilized partners.

Armed conflict creates profound challenges for first-time mothers navigating the early postpartum period without the presence of their partners. The abrupt loss of expected support, combined with heightened fear and prolonged uncertainty, intensifies emotional vulnerability and disrupts maternal adjustment to early parenthood. Despite extensive research on trauma and crisis, little is known about how large-scale armed conflict shapes first-time mothers' lived postpartum experiences and their engagement with care systems. This study aimed to explore these experiences among women who gave birth

Willingness to use long-acting injectable HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among men who have sex with men: A meta-analysis.

BackgroundMen who have sex with men (MSM) face a high risk of HIV acquisition globally. Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective but limited by adherence and stigma. Long-acting injectable PrEP (LAI-PrEP) offers a promising alternative, yet global acceptance among MSM remains unclear. This study aimed to estimate the pooled willingness to use LAI-PrEP among MSM and identify key determinants.MethodsPubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CINAHL were searched up to March 26, 2026. The search strategy contained the keyword willingness and interest and the MeSH terms for MSM and PrEP. Data an

Intimate Partner Violence Among LGBTQ+ Adults in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

We present the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature on intimate partner violence (IPV) among LGBTQ+ adults in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Of 1,234 articles, 22 met inclusion criteria, and data were extracted for 4 key research areas: prevalence, measurement, risk and protective factors, and interventions. LGBTQ+ adults in LAC experience IPV at similar or higher rates than those documented among cisgender heterosexuals, with estimates ranging from 0.4% to 91.4%. Inconsistencies in estimates may be due to non-standardized measures and subpopulation variability.

Emerging Technologies for Investigating Food Consumer Behavior: A Systematic Review.

The evolving nature of food preferences and consumption patterns highlights the need for ongoing research in food consumer behavior. Most existing research relies on traditional methods, like questionnaires, which are often costly, time-consuming, and prone to bias. The increasing integration of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Social Media Analytics (SMA), and Big Data, into the food sector presents novel opportunities to overcome these limitations. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for System
