Trends in the detection of viruses causing gastroenteritis over a 10-year period and impact of nonpharmaceutical interventions.

BACKGROUND: Viral gastroenteritis continues to be a leading cause of death in low-income countries. The impact of nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) on the transmission of gastroenteritis-causing viruses during the COVID-19 pandemic is understudied. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the 10-year trends of enteric viruses and estimate the impact of implementing and mitigating NPIs. STUDY DESIGN: Data regarding norovirus, rotavirus, adenovirus, astrovirus, and sapovirus detection were collected from five Korean hospitals between January 2013 and April 2023. We compared positivity between the pre-p

Norovirus: An Overview of Virology and Preventative Measures.

Norovirus (NoV) is an enteric non-enveloped virus which is the leading cause of gastroenteritis across all age groups. It is responsible for around 200,000 deaths annually and outbreaks are common in small communities such as educational and care facilities. 40% of all NoV outbreaks occur in long-term and acute-care facilities, forming the majority of outbreaks. Nosocomial settings set ideal environments for ease of transmission, especially due to the presence of immunocompromised groups. It is estimated to cost global economies around £48 billion a year, making it a global issue. NoV is trans

Evaluation of an Extraction Method for the Detection of GI and GII Noroviruses in Fruit and Vegetable Salads.

Human norovirus (HuNoV) is a major foodborne virus causing gastroenteritis outbreaks in humans. Salad products can be vectors of transmission for foodborne viruses such as HuNoV when these products are contaminated naturally or through unsanitary food handling. Therefore, development of simple, reliable and sensitive techniques for the detection of HuNoV in salad products is needed to ensure food safety. The purpose of our study was to optimize a method for the detection of HuNoV in artificially contaminated salad products. To this end, 2 different kinds of salads (fruit salads and vegetable s

Inhibition of Norovirus GII.4 binding to HBGAs by Sargassum fusiforme polysaccharide.

Norovirus (NoV) is the main pathogen that causes acute gastroenteritis and brings a heavy socio-economic burden worldwide. In this study, five polysaccharide fractions, labeled pSFP-1-5, were isolated and purified from Sargassum fusiforme (S. fusiforme). In vitro experiments demonstrated that pSFP-5 significantly prevented the binding of type A, B and H histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) to NoV GII.4 virus-like particles (NoV GII.4 VLPs). In addition, in vivo experiments revealed that pSFP-5 was effective in reducing the accumulation of NoV in oysters, indicating that pSFP-5 could reduce the r

Numerical solutions for norovirus epidemic spread: implications for public health control.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus and the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 685 million cases of norovirus infection occur each year, with around 200 million affecting children under the age of five. The impact of this virus is substantial, contributing to roughly 200,000 deaths annually-about 50,000 of which are among young children-mostly in low-income countries. In addition to the human toll, norovirus imposes a significant economic burden, with global costs reaching approximately $60 billion each year due

[Norovirus infections in Germany].

Noroviruses are responsible for the majority of acute viral gastroenteritis infections worldwide. Transmission may be faecal-oral or through contaminated food and water or airborne by virus-containing aerosols. Characteristics of noroviruses that facilitate their spread are their high concentration in stool and vomitus, their extreme environmental stability, their low infectious dose as well as the lack of long-lasting immunity. The majority of norovirus infections occur in large outbreaks among persons living in institutional settings, such as hospitals and nursing homes, although sporadic ca

An outbreak of Norwalk-like viral gastroenteritis in a frequently penalized food service operation: a case for mandatory training of food handlers in safety and hygiene.

In 1999, in Toledo, Ohio, an outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred among people who had attended a Christmas dinner banquet and had eaten food prepared by a local caterer. Overall, 93 of the 137 attendees (67.9 percent) reported illness. Eight sought medical care, and one was hospitalized. Case-control studies revealed that the illness was associated with eating tossed salad (odds ratio [OR] = 2.5, 95 percent confidence interval [CI] = 1.02-6.26). Eleven of 12 stool specimens that were taken from ill people tested positive for a Norwalk-like virus (NLV) but were negative for E. coli O157:H7, Sa

A large outbreak of acute gastroenteritis in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, 1972 revisited: evidence for common source exposure to a recombinant GII.Pg/GII.3 norovirus.

Historical outbreaks can be an important source of information in the understanding of norovirus evolution and epidemiology. Here, we revisit an outbreak of undiagnosed gastroenteritis that occurred in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania in 1972. Nearly 5000 people fell ill over the course of 10 days. Symptoms included diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and fever, lasting for a median of 24 h. Using current techniques, including next-generation sequencing of full-length viral genomic amplicons, we identified an unusual norovirus recombinant (GII.Pg/GII.3) in nine of 15 available stool samples from the

[Interaction between noroviruses and human histo-blood group antigens].

Norovirus (NOV), a member of the family Caliciviridae, is a major cause of water and food-borne acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis, and forms many morphologically similar but antigenically diverse groups of viruses. The virus-like particles (VLPs) derived from the prototype strain of NoV, Norwalk virus (NV/68), bind to histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs). HBGAs are carbohydrates that contain structurally related saccharide moieties, and are found in saliva and mucosal secretions from intestinal epithelial cells of secretor individuals who have FUT2 gene encoding a fucosyltransferase. A novel double-antibody sandwich ELISA based on monoclonal antibodies against the viral spike protein detects porcine deltacoronavirus infection.

UNLABELLED: Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is a significant emerging pathogen that causes severe enteric disease in swine, and therefore significant economic losses in the pig farming industry. Here, we developed a novel double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) based on two monoclonal antibodies directed against the PDCoV spike protein. These two monoclonal antibodies were obtained through hybridoma fusion and screening, and they can specifically react with the PDCoV spike protein. The detection limits of the DAS-ELISA for the recombinant spike protein and viral

Interference with virus and bacteria replication by the tissue specific expression of antibodies and interfering molecules.

Historically, protection against virus infections has relied on the use of vaccines, but the induction of an immune response requires several days and in certain situations, like in newborn animals that may be infected at birth and die in a few days, there is not sufficient time to elicit a protective immune response. Immediate protection in new born could be provided either by vectors that express virus-interfering molecules in a tissue specific form, or by the production of animals expressing resistance to virus replication. The mucosal surface is the largest body surface susceptible to viru

Coronavirus immunogens.

Coronaviruses (CV) infect a variety of livestock, poultry and companion animals. They belong to at least five antigenic groups. CV cause localized infections of the respiratory and/or intestinal tracts, with the exception of feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) and hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis (HEV) which cause systemic infections. The enteropathogenic CV infect the villous enterocytes resulting in villous atrophy leading to malabsorptive diarrhea. Several CV (bovine CV-BCV, porcine respiratory CV-PRCV, infectious bronchitis virus-IBV) cause respiratory disease. Current evidence in

Appropriate swab method for monitoring norovirus on environmental surfaces in an urban hospital.

Environmental surface contamination leads to microbial transmission. Norovirus is a leading cause of acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis. The virus remains stable in various environments and spreads through multiple routes, including direct contact with surfaces. This study aims to apply the swab method to detect norovirus on environmental surfaces in an urban hospital. Sterile distilled water used as the swab wetting buffer provided the highest recovery rate for norovirus (101.3 % ± 22.7 %). The norovirus GII concentration recovered from environmental surfaces ranged from 104 to 106 genome cop

Aerosolization and recovery of viable murine norovirus in an experimental setup.

Noroviruses are the major cause for viral acute gastroenteritis in the world. Despite the existing infection prevention strategies in hospitals, the disease continues to spread and causes extensive and numerous outbreaks. Hence, there is a need to investigate the possibility of airborne transmission of norovirus. In this study, we developed an experimental setup for studies on the infectivity of aerosolized murine norovirus (MNV), a model for the human norovirus. Two aerosol generation principles were evaluated: bubble bursting, a common natural aerosolization mechanism, and nebulization, a co

Immunoinformatics method to design universal multi-epitope nanoparticle vaccine for TGEV S protein.

Porcine transmissible enteritis virus (TGEV) is a fatal pathogen affecting newborn piglets, presenting a significant challenge to global intensive pig farming biosecurity due to its ongoing mutation. There is still a lack of effective vaccines to combat this virus, Vaccination has long been considered the most effective way to overcome infectious diseases, however, traditional vaccines cannot be brought to market quickly enough to deal with rapid mutations and emerging viruses. Therefore, this study addresses this gap by using immunoinformatics methods and ferritin nanoparticle delivery system

Genogroup IV and VI canine noroviruses interact with histo-blood group antigens.

UNLABELLED: Human noroviruses (HuNV) are a significant cause of viral gastroenteritis in humans worldwide. HuNV attaches to cell surface carbohydrate structures known as histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) prior to internalization, and HBGA polymorphism among human populations is closely linked to susceptibility to HuNV. Noroviruses are divided into 6 genogroups, with human strains grouped into genogroups I (GI), II, and IV. Canine norovirus (CNV) is a recently discovered pathogen in dogs, with strains classified into genogroups IV and VI. Whereas it is known that GI to GIII noroviruses bind to

Multi-Ligand Interactions Shape Human Norovirus Persistence, Transmission, and Control in Food Matrices.

Human norovirus (HuNoV) is the leading cause of foodborne viral gastroenteritis worldwide, yet its persistence in foods is still commonly interpreted through a simplified framework of contamination and residual survival. Accumulating evidence indicates that HuNoV persistence in food systems may be shaped by dynamic, genotype-dependent interactions with multiple classes of candidate ligands and retention mechanisms associated with hosts, food matrices, and microbiota. This review synthesizes current advances in the molecular basis and ecological consequences of these interactions, with emphasis
