Intravesical antineoplastic therapy following transurethral resection of bladder tumors: nursing implications from the operating room to discharge.

An aging population and latent effects from exposure to carcinogens will likely augment the current trend of increased incidence of urinary bladder cancer. Intravesical antineoplastic therapy is a common treatment for urinary bladder cancer. Transurethral resection of bladder tumors often is followed immediately by the instillation of an antineoplastic agent in the operating room or postanesthesia care unit. Oncology nurses, who have a unique knowledge of safe handling and patient care, can improve staff safety and patient outcomes in several areas of healthcare organizations, as well as reduc

Vesicorenal reflux and upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma after transurethral resection of recurrent superficial bladder carcinoma.

Of 288 patients with superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder vesicorenal reflux developed after transurethral resection in 26 per cent. This proportion was higher (77 per cent) when we considered only those tumors located near the ureteral orifices. There was a statistically significant relationship (p less than 0.001) between the development of upper urinary tract tumors and vesicorenal reflux (20 per cent of the patients with reflux and 0.9 per cent without reflux had a tumor), which corresponds to a 22-fold greater risk in the former group. Close followup is advised, since 1

Bladder paraganglioma: A case of acute respiratory distress syndrome triggered by large bladder tumor transurethral resection with mild symptoms and atypical imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder paraganglioma is exceedingly rare, accounting for <0.05% of bladder tumors. This is a case of paraganglioma with no symptom other than palpitations during urination, with atypical imaging, resulting in acute respiratory distress syndrome after transurethral resection of the bladder tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old man underwent transurethral resection of the bladder tumor for a bladder tumor 61 × 52 mm in size on contrast-enhanced computed tomography. The patient only had micturition attacks and was suspected to have urothelial carcinoma on magnetic resonance imag

The effect of holmium laser resection versus standard transurethral resection on non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

To explore the advantages and limitations of holmium laser resection of the bladder tumor (HOLRBT) versus standard transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT) in the treatment of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), the eligible studies were selected from the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase. Studies comparing HOLRBT and TURBT for patients with NMIBC were included. The outcomes of interest were time of operation, catheterization and hospitalization, rates of recurrence, and perioperative complications, including obturator nerve reflex, bladder perforati

Learning Curve and Surgeon Experience in En Bloc Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumour: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: En bloc transurethral resection of bladder tumour (ERBT) has been increasingly adopted to improve pathological accuracy and reduce recurrence rates compared with conventional TURBT. However, the influence of surgeon experience on procedural quality, oncologic outcomes, and learning curve dynamics remains underexplored. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on 80 consecutive patients undergoing ERBT between 2018 and 2024 at Palmerston North Hospital. Surgeons were stratified by experience (< 100 vs. ≥ 100 prior ERBTs). Primary outcomes included detrusor muscle presenc

YouTube as a Resource for Surgical Education: A Content Analysis of Transurethral Bladder Tumor Resection (TURBT) Videos.

Transurethral bladder tumor resection (TURBT) is the standard initial surgical procedure for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer and a core competency for urologists. Online surgical preparation increasingly relies on YouTube, but the educational quality of TURBT videos has not been systematically assessed. We performed a systematic YouTube search (March 1, 2025) using "transurethral resection of bladder tumor," "bladder tumor removal," and "TURBT." Standard-format procedure videos 2-30 min were included; nonprocedural, promotional, and Shorts content were excluded. Video characteristics, techn

Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy showing aggressive course after transurethral resection of urinary bladder: an autopsy case report.

A 77-year-old man developed pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy (PTTM) 2 days after undergoing transurethral resection for urothelial carcinoma (G3) of the urinary bladder and died of respiratory failure 6 days later. Histological findings demonstrated marked intimal fibrocellular proliferation, fibrin thrombi, and both cancer cells and fibrin thrombi in the arteries of the lungs, findings consistent with PTTM. Prominent stenosis in arteries smaller than 300 μm was also seen. The Ki-67 labeling index of primary and metastasized cancer cells was 62.4 % and 70.2 %, respectively. The membr

The Impact of Second Opinion Expert Pathology Review in Patient Management at the Time of Transurethral Resection of the Bladder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pathological features in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer specimens are pivotal in determining correct patients' therapeutic management. Sparse data exist regarding the importance of second opinion performed by an expert uropathologist. This study aimed to assess the importance of a second opinion by an expert uropathologist in the management of bladder cancer. METHODS: The study relied on 272 bladder cancer specimens from 231 patients seeking a pathology second opinion after transurethral resection of the bladder for a clinical suspicion of bladder cancer, relapse

[Use of a long term irrigation resectoscope (Iglesias) in the transurethral resection (TUR) of the bladder neck adenoma].

The initial euphoria which was given to the permanent irrigation resectoscope yielded a sober way of consideration. In a critical estimation of the new instrument, in our opinion, the 10 advantages, which iglesias emphasizes with regard to this device, may be reduced to three: 1. Shortening of the operation time or prolongation of the "pure resection time". 2. Better conditions of sight, which are particularly of importance for teaching clinics. 3. Reduction of the hydrodynamic and hydrostatic pressure and thus avoidance of the transurethral resection syndrome. The obstruction of the drainage

Agreement between transurethral resection of bladder tumor and radical cystectomy pathology in patients with bladder cancer subtype histology: A retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT) is a diagnostic staging procedure for bladder cancer (BC). Its pathologic interpretation may be limited by cautery artifact, lack of spatial orientation of tumor specimens, inter-pathologist variance in identifying subtypes, and sampling bias. Accurately identifying subtype histology (SH) on TURBT is critical for clinical decisions. We compared the agreement between TURBT and radical cystectomy (RC) pathology in patients with SH BC. METHODS: We examined TURBT and RC pathology of patients who underwent RC at our inst
