Psychogenic movement disorder is defined as abnormal movements unrelated to a medical cause and presumed related to underlying psychological factors. Although psychological factors are of both clinical and pathophysiological relevance, very few studies to date have systematically assessed their role in psychogenic movement disorder. We sought to assess the role of previous life stress using validated quantitative measures in patients with psychogenic movement disorder compared with age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers as well as a convenience sample of patients with focal hand dystonia. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon “British Petroleum (BP)” oil spill was a mega-disaster characterized as the petroleum industry’s largest-volume marine oil spill in history. Following a “wellhead blowout” that destroyed the drilling platform, 4.9 million barrels of petroleum flowed into the Gulf of Mexico over 87 days and the spill expanded to cover 68,000 square miles of sea surface. However, despite the expansive scope of the event, systematic surveys of affected coastal populations found only modest effects on mental health and substance abuse. An established trauma signature (TSIG) methodology w

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggested that traumatic events, including pandemics, can be associated with psychiatric symptoms like increased anxiety and depression. However, there were many unknowns concerning the emergent global coronavirus-19 (COVID-19), including its impact on psychiatric health within the United States. Our study aimed to track trends of mental health problems in individuals who presented with psychiatric complaints in an emergent setting.
METHODS: A total of 1776 patients and 1610 patients presented to Emergency Department (ED) with psychiatric complaints between January 1 - Jul

With a rapidly growing population of older adults worldwide, understanding how aging shapes mental and cognitive health is an urgent public health priority. Although older age has been considered protective against the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this pattern is far from universal. Emerging evidence indicates that older adults with a history of trauma may experience delayed-onset PTSD or a reemergence of symptoms after years of dormancy. In this review, we examine how age-related changes in the brain intersect with known PTSD mechanisms to influence trajectories of ris

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is connected with the experience of traumatic events and is significantly related to war and forced displacement. Refugee populations are characterized by a high degree of vulnerability for the development of PTSD, as they are confronted with stressors associated with all three distinct phases of migratory journey. The present article is an attempt to systematic review the therapeutic interventions based on the Cognitive Behavioral Approach and applied to refugees diagnosed with PTSD. For this reason, a review of the international literature was carried ou

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression involves complex interactions among social-environmental stressors, protective psychological resources, and psychological dysfunction. Traditional models inadequately capture cross-level interactions between these domains.
AIMS: We employed multilevel symptom network analysis to elucidate how childhood trauma, adolescent life events, and resilience are linked to core psychological dysfunction and suicide ideation in adolescent depression, with core psychological dysfunction defined as impairments in cognition, emotion, behavior and social functioning that cha

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently provided detailed instructions on how Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) should assess and evaluate pilots for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The European, Australian and International Civil Aviation Organization guidelines for the assessment of PTSD in aviation are general guidelines and do not address the unique and specific circumstances of a flight crew per se. The starting point of the U.S. FAA's guidance is an already-established clinical PTSD diagnosis since it is known that PTSD compromises aviation safety and has been rela

BACKGROUND: Active-duty servicewomen (ADSW) are at increased risk for mental health conditions compared to civilian women. Research suggests women with mental health conditions experience serious pregnancy complications at rates 50% higher than those without mental health conditions; yet research in military populations is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To explore associations between mental health conditions and adverse pregnancy outcomes among ADSW.
METHODS: Department of Defence data were used to identify a cohort of live birth pregnancies among ADSW that started and ended between October 2016 and D

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is central to regulating the body's stress response. While HPA axis function enables physiologic and behavioral adaptation to stress, dysregulation of its feedback mechanisms - driven by early-life adversity, chronic stress, trauma, or illness - contributes to the pathophysiology of various physical and neuropsychiatric disorders. Gene expression is controlled by chromatin plasticity, which involves epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and noncoding RNA regulation. Animal models demonstrate that early-life stressors

This review aims to explore the intricate relationship among epigenetic mechanisms, stress, and affective disorders, focusing on how early life experiences and coping mechanisms contribute to susceptibility to mood disorders. Epigenetic factors play a crucial role in regulating gene expression without altering the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequence, and recent research has revealed associations between epigenetic changes and maladaptive responses to stress or psychiatric disorders. A scoping review of 33 studies employing the PRISMA-S (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Met

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a highly prevalent and disabling condition linked to early stressors including traumatic abuse and abandonment. While much work has addressed traumatic events in childhood, little is known about the biological sequelae of BPD including how this disorder may be differentiated from other stress-related disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this study was to investigate psychophysiological effects of different types of stressful reminders in BPD and in PTSD. Psychophysiological measures including heart rate, skin conductanc

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a stressor-related disorder that affects a significant proportion of the population worldwide. Despite the neurological nature of this disorder, its functional biomarkers, due to mixed results remain far to be understood. Therefore, the present review study aims to explore functional brain differences between individuals with PTSD and healthy controls with (TEHC) and without (TUHC) trauma exposure, using a machine learning approach.
METHOD: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus to identify relevant studies publishe

Vicarious trauma, a form of emotional stress experienced by observing the suffering of others has gained prominence as a major contributor to depression and other stress-related disorders. Traditional animal models of depression such as Chronic Social Defeat Stress (CSDS) focus on physical stressors but fail to replicate the psychological dimensions of vicarious trauma. The Vicarious Social Defeat Stress (VSDS) model fills this gap by inducing emotional stress without physical injury. This enables us to investigate the neural, behavioral and molecular mechanisms unique to emotional stress-indu

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents has a high prevalence of accompanying sleep disturbances. Currently, pediatric treatment of PTSD-related nightmares is extrapolated from adult studies. This study aims to determine the effectiveness and safety of clonidine and guanfacine compared with prazosin for the treatment of PTSD-related nightmares.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, single-center, medical record review of patients 5 to 17 years old admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit from January 2015 to September 2021. Patients with a new initiation o

Considerable racial/ethnic disparities persist in exposure to life stressors and socioeconomic resources that can directly affect threat neurocircuitry, particularly the amygdala, that partially mediates susceptibility to adverse posttraumatic outcomes. Limited work to date, however, has investigated potential racial/ethnic variability in amygdala reactivity or connectivity that may in turn be related to outcomes such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants from the AURORA study (n = 283), a multisite longitudinal study of trauma outcomes, completed functional magnetic resonance

BACKGROUND: Harassment of servicewomen during military service has been well-documented, but harassment of women veterans in Veterans Affairs (VA) health care settings has not been studied systematically. We assessed the prevalence and impacts of harassment among women veterans who use VA health care.
METHODS: From January to March 2015, we conducted computer-assisted telephone interviews of randomly sampled women veterans with three or more primary care and/or women's health visits at 1 of 12 VA medical centers. We asked if patients had experienced inappropriate/unwanted comments or behavior

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence shows that the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis can be dysregulated in chronic sexual abuse victims with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We hypothesized that PTSD in adolescents exposed to a single sexual trauma may function as a chronic stressor leading to HPA-axis dysregulation.
AIMS: The objective of this study was to assess dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S) and cortisol levels in female adolescents |with single sexual trauma-related PTSD compared to healthy controls.
METHOD: We assessed 20 female adolescent (age 12-18) single sexual trau
