BACKGROUND: Partial nephrectomy (PN) is the gold standard for the treatment of small renal masses. Urinary biomarkers (UBMs) may serve as early indicators of acute kidney injury (AKI) following PN.

The mRNA levels of LIV-1 and pS2, two estrogen-responsive genes, are increased by the agents, cholera toxin (CT) plus 3-isobutyl-l-methylxanthine (IBMX), which cause an increase in cAMP in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. Much remains unknown about how the intestinal microbiome interfaces with the protective intestinal mucus layer. Bifidobacterium species colonize the intestinal mucus layer and can modulate mucus production by goblet cells. However, select Bifidobacterium strains can also degrade protective glycans on mucin proteins. We hypothesized that the human-derived species Bifidobacterium dentium would increase intestinal mucus synthesis and expulsion, without extensive degradation of mucin glycans. In silico data revealed that B. dentium lacked the enzymes necessary to extensively degrade mucin glycans.
