BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is caused by watercress and similar freshwater plants or drinking water or beverages contaminated with metacercariae. Fascioliasis can radiologically mimic many primary or metastatic liver tumors. Herein, we aimed to present the treatment process of a patient with fascioliasis mimicking colon cancer liver metastasis.
CASE SUMMARY: A 35-year-old woman who underwent right hemicolectomy due to cecum cancer was referred to our clinic for management of colon cancer liver metastasis. Both computed tomography and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography revealed s

Fascioliasis has been reported from many countries across the globe. Acute phase of liver fluke is characterised by fever, abdominal pain and peripheral blood eosinophilia while the chronic phase is marked by chronic inflammation involving biliary tract. It is commonly diagnosed by a radiologist due to characteristic branching abscesses seen on CT scan, highly suggestive of liver fluke. Diagnosis is made by demonstration of eggs on direct microscopic examination of duodenal aspirate or bile. Screening of family members is recommended once diagnosis is has been made. Triclabendazole is the drug

In this case report, a 64-year-old woman with symptoms of lethargy, nausea, fluctuating temperature, and weight loss was suspected of a disease of cardiological or haematological aetiology. She was diagnosed with liver fluke infection based on serological evidence, eosinophilia, relevant exposure, and clinical presentation. High-dose triclabendazole led to symptom resolution. On several occasions, she had been eating watercress from a meadow with grazing sheep. The tendency of eating raw watercress and other green plants collected in nature confers an increased risk of developing liver fluke i

Multi-organ infection with Fasciola hepatica is uncommon. We report a case of severe infection with Fasciola hepatica as a cause of liver and peritoneum injuries with hemorrhagic ascites as well as pulmonary, pericardial, splenic and portal system injuries in a 37-year old man who was a native of Green Cape. The patient was in poor general health, had a major inflammatory syndrome, and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia (90 g/L). The diagnosis was confirmed by positive distomatosis serology and the presence of eggs of Fasciola hepatica in the histological samples of the liver and peritoneum. Af

Hepatobiliary fascioliasis is a neglected but re-emerging parasitic disease caused by Fasciola hepatica. Humans become infected by consuming contaminated water or aquatic plants, allowing the parasite to enter the digestive tract. From there, immature flukes penetrate the intestinal wall and migrate through the liver, triggering inflammation, fibrosis, and biliary complications. Over time, this can lead to cholangitis, biliary obstruction, and long-term liver damage. Due to its vague clinical symptoms and the limitations of current diagnostic methods, fascioliasis could be easily missed. Stool

Fascioliasis is an infectious parasitic disease distributed globally and caused by the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica or F. gigantica This neglected tropical disease affects both animals and humans, and it represents a latent public health problem due to the significant economic losses related to its effects on animal husbandry. For decades, triclabendazole has been the unique anti-Fasciola drug that can effectively treat this disease. However, triclabendazole resistance in fascioliasis has more recently been reported around the world, and thus, the discovery of novel drugs is an urgent need. T

The liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica is an economically important pathogen of sheep and cattle and has been described by the WHO as a re-emerging zoonosis. Control is heavily reliant on the use of drugs, particularly triclabendazole and as a result resistance has now emerged. The population structure of F. hepatica is not well known, yet it can impact on host-parasite interactions and parasite control with drugs, particularly regarding the spread of triclabendazole resistance. We have identified 2448 potential microsatellites from 83 Mb of F. hepatica genome sequence using msatfinder. Thirty-fiv

Hepatic abscess is a rare complication of fascioliasis, with fewer than 50 reported cases worldwide. The diagnosis requires a high degree of suspicion and is often identified after extensive investigation leading to delays in treatment. With this case report, we aim to highlight the need for a higher index of suspicion in non endemic regions like the USA, especially in cities with large immigrant populations. Given the ease and success rates of treatment with oral triclabendazole, the morbidity from unnecessary invasive testing and disease burden is preventable with a thorough evaluation and t

Human infection with the trematode Fasciola occurs with a worldwide prevalence of up to 17 million. Sheep and cattle are the normal host. Infection typically results in hepatobiliary disease, but extrahepatic manifestations are occasionally reported. Here, we present the case of a previously healthy 31-year-old Kurdish woman, admitted to hospital with a subarachnoid hemorrhage, eosinophilic meningitis, and lung and liver disease. A diagnosis of Fasciola infection was made based on strongly positive serology in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. The patient improved following treatment with triclab

Paragonimiasis is a parasite infection caused by several species of Paragonimus, a trematode that is transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked crabs and that has been found in the subtropical areas of America, Asia and Africa. This infection mainly affects the lungs, causing clinical and radiological manifestations very similar to pulmonary tuberculosis, so it should always be included in the differential diagnosis. We present the case of a 7-year-old school patient, hospitalized with the diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis, who had a favorable evolution after receiving treat

Human fascioliasis (HF), caused by the common liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, is an endemic infection in many parts of tropical countries. HF can also be seen in some of the non-tropical countries. This report describes two girls with severe iron deficiency anemia and eosinophilia, who were diagnosed as HF. The infection was successfully eliminated with the administration of triclabendazole. No side effects or recurrence was observed after the treatment. It should be kept in mind that marked eosinophilia with severe iron deficiency anemia should alert pediatricians to the possibility of F. hepa

Fasciolosis caused by the trematode Fasciola hepatica is a zoonotic neglected disease affecting animals and humans worldwide. Infection occurs upon ingestion of aquatic plants or water contaminated with metacercariae. These release the newly excysted juveniles (FhNEJ) in the host duodenum, where they establish contact with the epithelium and cross the intestinal barrier to reach the peritoneum within 2-3 h after infection. Juveniles crawl up the peritoneum towards the liver, and migrate through the hepatic tissue before reaching their definitive location inside the major biliary ducts, where t

We report a case of human fascioliasis in the USA that encountered many diagnostic uncertainties. Numerous tests available for detection of fascioliasis were utilised but the diagnosis remained elusive. Confounders included three negative stool ova and parasite examinations, positive hepatitis A virus IgM antibody, cross-reactive false-positive Echinococcus IgG antibody, absence of characteristic image findings and unrevealing liver biopsy. Praziquantel was started as empiric treatment for helminth infections, but was ineffective. Due to the rarity of the disease in the USA, serologic testing

Fascioliasis is a foodborne zoonotic infection caused by the trematode liver flukes: Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica (F. gigantica). Infections may cause acute and chronic hepatobiliary tract diseases in herbivore animals and humans. Fascioliasis is present worldwide, particularly in regions where sheep and cattle are raised. The global burden of human fascioliasis is estimated to be 2.7 million. Human infections are rare in the United States, and most infections were acquired abroad. In the 1950s, several human cases of F. gigantica infection were reported from Hawai'i, but no subseq

This experimental study was conducted to evaluate the susceptibility of American bison (Bison bison) to liver flukes, Fascioloides magna and Fasciola hepatica. Six bison were each experimentally inoculated with 600 metacercariae of Fascioloides magna, and three were later treated with triclabendazole suspension at 40 mg/kg of body weight. Four additional bison were each experimentally inoculated with 600 metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica. Five control bison were placebo controls. Two controls and all inoculated bison were euthanized 10 mo (Fascioloides magna) and 7 mo (Fasciola hepatica) afte

Fasciola hepatica is a trematode that is visible to the naked eye. The diagnosis can be made by serology or by clinical improvement and decrease of eosinophilia after triclabendazole treatment or by finding parasite eggs in the stool. Sometimes the diagnosis is possible during unnecessary surgery, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). F. hepatica infection should be considered in patients with typical clinical findings; the elevation of liver enzymes indicating cholestasis, eosinophilia, and characteristic computed tomography (CT) or ultrasono

We report 3 cases of fascioliasis imported to Norway: a 24-y-old male Vietnamese immigrant and a 51-y-old female Vietnamese immigrant with acute fascioliasis, and a 2-y-old male Ethiopian adoptee with chronic fascioliasis. Diagnosis was confirmed by detection of specific antibodies to Fasciola hepatica in the 2 first cases and by demonstration of Fasciola hepatica eggs in stool samples in the latter case. Treatment with oral triclabendazole led to prompt cure in all 3 patients. Imported fascioliasis is rarely reported but should be suspected in patients with a travel history to endemic areas,

Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease caused by a leaf-like worm (fluke) called Fasciola. Herein, we present a case of human hepatic fascioliasis. A 57-year-old man was referred to the hospital for ambiguous gastrointestinal symptoms with suspected hemangioma. Hepatic fascioliasis was diagnosed using abdominal computed tomography and serology. He tested positive for the IgG antibody against Fasciola hepatica. The patient was treated successfully with triclabendazole. This is the first published report on the occurrence of fascioliasis in Northeast Iran, a non-endemic area for fascioliasis. Our re
