Wound Healing Complications in Diabetic Patients Undergoing Carpal Tunnel and Trigger Finger Releases: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association of diabetes and perioperative hemoglobin A1C (HgA1C) value with postoperative wound healing complications following carpal tunnel release (CTR) and trigger finger release (TFR). METHODS: A retrospective review of diabetic patients who underwent CTR and/or TFR between 2014 and 2018 was performed. Hemoglobin A1C value within 90 days of surgery was recorded for all diabetic patients. A nondiabetic comparison group was selected from within the same study period in an approximately 1:1 procedural ratio, although direct matching was not performed. A chart review

Multi-site evaluation of advanced practice hand therapy clinics for the management of patients with trigger digit.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort design. BACKGROUND: Patient time on Australian public hospital surgical outpatient department (SOPD) waitlists often exceeds clinical recommendations for chronic hand conditions. Diversion to allied health is an alternative option, however evidence regarding patient and organizational outcomes in hand therapy is lacking. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To evaluate clinical and organizational efficacy, patient outcomes and satisfaction of diversion of referrals for patients with trigger digit (TD) from SOPD waitlists to Advanced Practice Hand Therapy (APHT) at 3 Austral

Patient Comprehension of Trigger Finger Concepts Based on Distribution Format: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Handout Versus Video.

BACKGROUND: Patient comprehension is an essential part of optimizing medical outcomes. It is unknown which format is most effective in delivering this information. In addition to a face-to-face conversation, a paper handout is often given as an educational supplement at the conclusion of a visit. Secondary to advances in technology and the ubiquity of the Internet, medical videos have gained popularity. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to determine whether the educational material format (paper handout vs video) resulted in a difference in either comprehension of the conditi

Percutaneous Release Procedures: Trigger Finger and Carpal Tunnel.

Trigger digit and carpal tunnel syndrome are both conditions traditionally treated with open surgery but are potentially amenable to curative treatment using percutaneous techniques. The advantages of minimally invasive techniques are lower risk of wound breakdown and infection, quicker healing, reduced postprocedural pain, reduced complications, and a quicker return to normal activity. The advent of high-resolution ultrasound has allowed percutaneous release procedures for these conditions to be developed and performed with a potential for a reduced risk of complications and an increased like

Evidence-based management of adult trigger digits.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this systematic review was to develop an evidence-based guideline to assist clinicians in the treatment of adult trigger digits. There is moderate evidence to suggest that local corticosteroid injection is a safe and effective short-term treatment and it may, therefore, be recommended as an initial treatment for this condition. However, when compared with surgery, there is strong evidence that corticosteroid injection is associated with increased rates of ongoing or recurrent symptoms at 6 months after intervention. There is strong evidence suggesting that trigger digit

A1 pulley cutting potential and safety of three ultrasound-guided percutaneous A1 pulley release techniques for trigger finger: a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus as to the best technique for percutaneous trigger finger release. METHODS: This assessor-blinded study compared three ultrasound-guided percutaneous trigger finger release techniques using a needle (N), a needle-knife (NK), and a specially designed knife (K). Three physicians simulated A1 pulley release surgery on 56 fingers of 14 fresh-frozen hand cadaver body donors. Both the physicians and the fingers included were randomly selected. RESULTS: The results of repeated-measures ANOVA revealed significantly longer cuts for the NK and K techniques, than for th
