Atypical brain structural connectivity and social cognition in childhood maltreatment and peer victimisation.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is associated with neurobiological aberrations and atypical social cognition. Few studies have examined the neural effects of another common early-life interpersonal stressor, namely peer victimisation (PV). This study examines the associations between tract aberrations and childhood interpersonal stress from caregivers (CM) and peers (PV), and explores how the observed tract alterations are in turn related to affective theory of mind (ToM). METHODS: Data from 107 age-and gender-matched youths (34 CM [age = 19.9 ± 1.68; 36%male], 35 PV [age = 19.9 ± 1.6

Association between Diffusion Tensor Imaging Findings and Cognitive Outcomes Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A PRISMA-Compliant Meta-Analysis.

Previous diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) research in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) patients only concentrated on a limited number of brain regions and a specific cognitive function. Thus, the study aimed to explore the association between DTI findings and cognitive function following mTBI using a meta-analysis. We conducted a search for articles exploring the associations between DTI findings and cognitive outcomes following mTBI published in English in databases (PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Medline, and Google Scholar) before October 2019. The correlations were computed to explore ass

Structural alterations associated with suicide attempts in major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder: A diffusion tensor imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) are major affective disorders associated with high risk for suicide. Neural mechanisms underlying suicide attempts are poorly understood in MDD and BD but likely relate to the structural abnormalities in brain regions. In this study, we explored structural alterations in MDD and BD with prior suicide attempts (SA) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: Participants consisted of 27 MDD patients with prior SA (men: 9; age means±sd: 28.04 ± 11.06 years), 49 MDD patients without prior SA (men: 11; age means±sd: 30.03 ±

Associations between diffusion tensor imaging patterns and cerebrospinal fluid markers in mild cognitive impairment.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can be used to detect early signs of increased water diffusivity in white matter tracts in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study examined how DTI, alongside cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers (like tau proteins and amyloid-β), can help identify early brain changes in MCI. We included 159 individuals (92 with MCI and 67 healthy controls) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) and extracted their demographics, CSF biomarkers, and DTI metrics. We compared the biomarkers (CSF biomarkers and DTI markers in 57 white matter tra

The Structural and Functional Connectivity of the Orbitofrontal Cortex: Deconvoluting Brodmann Areas 11, 13, 14, and 47.

The orbitofrontal cortex is central to decision making, reward valuation, emotional regulation, and goal-directed behavior. Although traditional cytoarchitectonic classifications, such as Brodmann map, identified multiple cortical areas within the orbitofrontal cortex, recent neuroimaging advancements such as the Human Connectome Project have refined our anatomical understanding in granular detail. This study characterizes the structural and functional connectivity of key orbitofrontal subregions, particularly Brodmann area 11, Brodmann area 13, Brodmann area 14, and Brodmann area 47, correspo

Non-complete recovery of temporal lobe white matter diffusion metrics at one year Post-Radiotherapy: Implications for Radiation-Induced necrosis risk.

BACKGROUND: Temporal lobe (TL) white matter (WM) injuries are often seen early after radiotherapy (RT) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients (NPCs), which fail to fully recover in later stages, exhibiting a "non-complete recovery pattern". Herein, we explored the correlation between non-complete recovery WM injuries and TL necrosis (TLN), identifying dosimetric predictors for TLN-related high-risk WM injuries. METHODS: We longitudinally examined 161 NPCs and 19 healthy controls employing multi-shell diffusion MRI. Automated fiber-tract quantification quantified diffusion metrics within TL WM t

Microstructural Organization of Distributed White Matter Associated With Fine Motor Control in US Service Members With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is the most common form of brain injury. While most individuals recover from mTBI, roughly 20% experience persistent symptoms, potentially including reduced fine motor control. We investigate relationships between regional white matter organization and subcortical volumes associated with performance on the Grooved Pegboard (GPB) test in a large cohort of military Service Members and Veterans (SM&Vs) with and without a history of mTBI(s). Participants were enrolled in the Long-term Impact of Military-relevant Brain Injury Consortium-Chronic Effects of Neurotra

Structural Brain Connectivity in Childhood Disruptive Behavior Problems: A Multidimensional Approach.

BACKGROUND: Studies of white matter connectivity in children with disruptive behavior have yielded inconsistent results, possibly owing to the trait's heterogeneity, which comprises diverse symptoms like physical aggression, irritability, and delinquency. This study examined associations of global and specific white matter connectivity with childhood disruptive behavior problems, while accounting for their complex multidimensionality. METHODS: In a large cross-sectional population-based study of 10-year-old preadolescents (n = 2567), we assessed four previously described empirically derived d

White matter fiber compromise contributes differentially to attention and emotion processing impairment in alcoholism, HIV-infection, and their comorbidity.

Alcoholism (ALC) and HIV-1 infection (HIV) each affects emotional and attentional processes and integrity of brain white matter fibers likely contributing to functional compromise. The highly prevalent ALC+HIV comorbidity may exacerbate compromise. We used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and an emotional Stroop Match-to-Sample task in 19 ALC, 16 HIV, 15 ALC+HIV, and 15 control participants to investigate whether disruption of fiber system integrity accounts for compromised attentional and emotional processing. The task required matching a cue color to that of an emotional word with faces appear

Atlas-based white matter analysis in individuals with velo-cardio-facial syndrome (22q11.2 deletion syndrome) and unaffected siblings.

BACKGROUND: Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS, MIM#192430, 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome) is a genetic disorder caused by a deletion of about 40 genes at the q11.2 band of one copy of chromosome 22. Individuals with VCFS present with deficits in cognition and social functioning, high risk of psychiatric disorders, volumetric reductions in gray and white matter (WM) and some alterations of the WM microstructure. The goal of the current study was to characterize the WM microstructural differences in individuals with VCFS and unaffected siblings, and the correlation of WM microstructure with neuropsy

Physical Activity Predicts Population-Level Age-Related Differences in Frontal White Matter.

Physical activity has positive effects on brain health and cognitive function throughout the life span. Thus far, few studies have examined the effects of physical activity on white matter microstructure and psychomotor speed within the same, population-based sample (critical if conclusions are to extend to the wider population). Here, using diffusion tensor imaging and a simple reaction time task within a relatively large population-derived sample (N = 399; 18-87 years) from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience (Cam-CAN), we demonstrate that physical activity mediates the effect o

Genetic risk of dementia modifies obesity effects on white matter myelin in cognitively healthy adults.

APOE-ε4 is a major genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease that interacts with other risk factors, but the nature of such combined effects remains poorly understood. We quantified the impact of APOE-ε4, family history (FH) of dementia, and obesity on white matter (WM) microstructure in 165 asymptomatic adults (38-71 years old) using quantitative magnetization transfer and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging. Microstructural properties of the fornix, parahippocampal cingulum, and uncinate fasciculus were compared with those in motor and whole-brain WM regions. Wide

Neurobiological substrates of major psychiatry disorders: transdiagnostic associations between white matter abnormalities, neuregulin 1 and clinical manifestation.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder are increasingly being conceptualized as a transdiagnostic continuum. Disruption of white matter is a common alteration in these psychiatric disorders, but the molecular mechanisms underlying the disruption remain unclear. Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) is genetically linked with susceptibility to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, and it is also related to white matter. METHODS: Using a transdiagnostic approach, we aimed to identify white matter differences associated with NRG1 and their relationship t

Relationship between aberrant brain connectivity and clinical features in Angelman Syndrome: a new method using tract based spatial statistics of DTI color-coded orientation maps.

AIM: In order to relate brain structural abnormalities to clinical features of Angelman Syndrome (AS), we determined the locations of abnormal regional white matter architecture in AS children using a sensitive and objective whole brain approach to analyze diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) color-coded orientation maps. METHODS: Using tract based spatial statistics (TBSS) of DTI color-coded orientation maps, the fraction of fibers oriented in the anteroposterior (AP), mediolateral (ML) and superioinferior (SI) directions were determined in whole brain white matter of 7 children with AS (mean age:

White matter microstructural abnormalities in the frontal lobe of adults with antisocial personality disorder.

UNLABELLED: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and psychopathy involve significant interpersonal and behavioural impairments. However, little is known about their underlying neurobiology and in particular, abnormalities in white matter (WM) microstructure. A preliminary diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) study of adult psychopaths employing tractography revealed abnormalities in the right uncinate fasciculus (UF) (Craig et al., 2009), indicating fronto-limbic disconnectivity. However, it is not clear whether WM abnormalities are restricted to this tract or are or more wid

Decreased Number of Self-Paced Saccades in Post-Concussion Syndrome Associated with Higher Symptom Burden and Reduced White Matter Integrity.

The aim of this study was to examine the potential utility of a self-paced saccadic eye movement as a marker of post-concussion syndrome (PCS) and monitoring the recovery from PCS. Fifty-nine persistently symptomatic participants with at least two concussions performed the self-paced saccade (SPS) task. We evaluated the relationships between the number of SPSs and 1) number of self-reported concussion symptoms, and 2) integrity of major white matter (WM) tracts (as measured by fractional anisotropy [FA] and mean diffusivity) that are directly or indirectly involved in saccadic eye movements an
