Could the incidence of postoperative urinary tract infection be reduced by reversing the sequence of vaginal cleansing and urethral catheterization?

Postoperative urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common hospital infection after gynaecological operations. A prospective randomized study was performed to examine whether the incidence of UTI could be reduced by reversing the sequence of vaginal cleansing and urethral catheterization. Subjects were randomly allocated to: (1) urethral catheterization before vaginal cleansing; and (2) urethral catheterization after vaginal cleansing. Urine cultures were performed immediately after the procedures as the baseline, on the day of catheter removal, and two days after catheter removal. Patients were

Keratinizing Squamous and Intestinal Metaplasia in Urothelium of Long-term Catheterized Patients with Chronic Urinary Tract Infections.

PURPOSE: Many spinal cord-injured (SCI) patients are recurrently catheterized to manage urinary retention and incontinence. Microbial pathogens colonize urethral catheter surfaces, persist in form of biofilms and trigger inflammatory responses in the bladder. Our objective was to determine bladder tissue changes due to long-term inflammation using LC-MS proteomics. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We examined longitudinal proteomic profiles from eight SCI patients, sampled over 2 to 6 months, in a patient-specific manner as well as compared with trauma patients diagnosed with acute urinary tract infectio

Antibacterial effects of silver nanoparticles on the bacterial strains isolated from catheterized urinary tract infection cases.

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are among the most common type of nosocomial infections. Patients with indwelling urinary catheters are at the highest risk of getting infected. The antibacterial effects of silver compounds have been known to man kind for ancient times. It has recently been found that silver nanoparticles possess significant antibacterial potential. Surface modifications of urinary catheters with Ag-NPs may prevent the risk of contamination and the associated infections. In this study we have studied the antibacterial effects of Ag-NPS on bacterial isolates from UTI cases. Our r

[Urinary tract infection prevention in catheterized patients. Prevalence National Study: preliminary studies at the Pinerolo Hospital].

Urinary tract infection incidence can be a possible indicator of the quality of health care in hospital. It is now clear that some kind of health care, practice and particular organizational and structural orders change the risk of UTI during hospitalizations. One third of hospital infections can be prevented by carrying out specified rules and guidelines. About 80% of UTI are a consequence of bladder catheterism. According to Major Health Institute, our Hospital takes part in a Study Group on the incidence and prevention of UTI related to bladder catheterism. Preliminary results show how much

Sheathed catheter system for fluoroscopically guided retrograde catheterization, and brush and forceps biopsy of the upper urinary tract.

A sheathed (coaxial) ureteral catheter has been designed for use in fluoroscopically guided retrograde procedures. Once the catheter has been inserted into the ureter the inner section is removed, leaving a semiflexible sheath as a conduit for biopsy forceps, curved catheters and other instruments. The sheath facilitates ureteral stenting, forceps biopsy of the renal pelvis and brush biopsy of all calices. The sheath also helps in percutaneous stone extraction by allowing retrograde passage and removal of balloon catheters with the patient in the prone position. Cystoscopy is needed initially

An economic model to assess the cost and benefits of the routine use of silver alloy coated urinary catheters to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections in catheterized patients.

Prevalence studies generally find nosocomial urinary tract infections to be the most common type of nosocomial infection, accounting for between 21% and 45% of all HAIs. The main risk factor appears to be the presence of a urinary catheter, with an estimated 80% of these infections being associated with their use. This paper describes a model which quantifies the extent of the burden of these infections in terms of the number of patients affected and the costs incurred by the hospital sector; and identifies the potential benefits of the routine use of silver alloy coated catheters, as a means

Single-Use vs Reusable Catheters for Intermittent Catheterization in Patients With Urinary Retention: The COMPARE Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is the preferred management for urinary retention. Single-use catheters generate substantial environmental and financial burdens, whereas evidence on the safety of reusable catheters is limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether reusable catheters are noninferior to single-use catheters for CIC with respect to urinary tract infection (UTI) incidence. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter, noninferiority randomized clinical trial was conducted between February 21, 2020, and April 3, 2025, at 12 Dutch hospitals and included patient

In vivo catheterization study of chlorhexidine-loaded nanoparticle coated Foley urinary catheters in male New Zealand white rabbits.

Foley urinary catheters were coated with chlorhexidine-loaded nanoparticles (CHX-NPs), encapsulated in the form of micelles and nanospheres. Both of nanoparticles were deposited by multilayer nanocoating through dip and spray coating on the catheter surface both inner and outer surface. In our previous studies, the nanocoating of Foley urinary catheters was studied for chlorhexidine release, degradation, antibacterial evaluation, cytotoxicity assessment, hemocompatibility, skin irritation, skin sensitization, and stability during storage. The results demonstrated the antimicrobial functions an
