People with development disorders, for instance autism, need structured plans to help create predictability in their daily lives. Digital plans can facilitate enhanced independency, learning, and quality of life, but existing apps are largely general purpose and lack the flexibility required by this specific but heterogeneous user group. Universal design is both a goal and a process and should be based on a holistic approach and user-centered design, interacting with the users in all stages of the development process. At Oslo and Akershus University College (HiOA) we conducted a research-based

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a modifiable risk factor for dementia. Past physical activity interventions often overlook the voices of the end user in the design process, particularly minoritized groups living with dementia or memory challenges. To develop physical activity interventions, we use the principles of human-centered design.
OBJECTIVE: We applied human-centered design using the innovation biodesign framework to develop a physical activity intervention, Nurturing Aging Through Uplifting Activities in a Restorative Environment (NATURE) program for minoritized individuals as a us

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and related complications, making management vital to lessen diabetes-related burdens. Intensive lifestyle interventions can reduce the risk of T2D, but their high resource demands limit widespread use. In prediabetes, digital interventions are effective and may improve accessibility to preventive healthcare by reducing costs. However, findings vary, likely due to insufficient systematic development and reporting of complex interventions, which are crucial for effectiveness and replication. Many health interventions ar

BACKGROUND: Recent research shows that chronic pain affects 27% of the adult population. For many, pain significantly impairs quality of life and everyday functioning. Behavioral interventions have shown utility, but access remains limited. Digital health solutions can increase reach, but there is a need for user-friendly, feasible, and evidence-based digital interventions.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify how a digital behavioral intervention for people with chronic pain can be developed through a user-centered approach to address the needs and preferences of the target population.

The current research aims to empirically examine user preferences of four variations of visual explanations from an image classification model. Participants (N = 23) were recruited from a Midwestern university. The study was a within-subjects design in which participants were asked to rate four local interpretable model-agnostic explanation (LIME) variations from best to worst in an image classification task across 10 trials. A Friedman's test and a Plackett-Luce analysis were conducted to examine participants' rank-order preferences for the variations, and a linear mixed-effects model on eye-

BACKGROUND: Limited consideration of clinical decision support (CDS) design best practices, such as a user-centered design, is often cited as a key barrier to CDS adoption and effectiveness. The application of CDS best practices is resource intensive; thus, institutions often rely on commercially available CDS tools that are created to meet the generalized needs of many institutions and are not user centered. Beyond resource availability, insufficient guidance on how to address key aspects of implementation, such as contextual factors, may also limit the application of CDS best practices. An i

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed both direct and collateral health impacts especially on vulnerable populations, underscoring the need for more targeted and equitable crisis response strategies. Health-related dashboards could support better information sharing, research, and care delivery, but current dashboards often fail to address the needs of vulnerable groups. This study aimed to assess expert perspectives on key aspects of a new crisis response health dashboard to protect vulnerable populations intended to be used by medical professionals and affected persons.

INTRODUCTION: Decision aids (DAs) are helpful instruments used to support shared decision making (SDM). Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) face complex decisions regarding stroke prevention strategies. While a few DAs have been made for AF stroke prevention, an encounter DA (EDA) and patient DA (PDA) have not been created to be used in conjunction with each other before.
DESIGN: Using iterative user-centered design, we developed 2 DAs for anticoagulation choice and stroke prevention in AF. Prototypes were created, and we elicited feedback from patients and experts via observations of enco

BACKGROUND: Interactive dashboards have expanded public access to HIV surveillance and programmatic data, but existing tools do not synthesize implementation research evidence into formats accessible to the diverse stakeholders who could use it. Designing such tools requires deliberate alignment with users' needs, language, and decision-making contexts.
OBJECTIVE: We describe the human-centered design (HCD) process used to develop and conduct a formative evaluation of the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) Implementation Science (IS) Reporting Dashboard, a public-facing tool intended to synthesize

This study provides a chronological analysis of how Extended Reality (XR) interaction techniques have evolved from early controller-centered interfaces to natural hand- and gaze-based input and, more recently, to multimodal input, with a particular focus on the role of XR devices. We collected 46 user study-based XR interaction papers published between 2016 and 2024, including only studies that explicitly defined their interaction techniques and reported quantitative and/or qualitative evaluation results. For each study, we documented the XR hardware and software development kits (SDKs) used a

BACKGROUND: According to human-centered design principles, user experience and user satisfaction are key aspects when developing or providing patients and clients with assistive, rehabilitation, or training technologies. Existing tools for assessing user experience and satisfaction are often either too narrow (developed for specific technologies) or too broad, failing to capture all relevant aspects of the technology being evaluated.
OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to present the development process and content validation of a questionnaire that, following further validation s

Population aging threatens the sustainability of welfare systems since it is not accompanied by an extended healthy and independent period in the last years of life. The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) has been shown to be efficient in maintaining the healthy period at the end of the life. Frailty monitoring is typically carried out for an average period of 6 months in clinical settings, while more regular monitoring could prevent the transition to disability. We present the design process of a system for frailty home monitoring based on an adapted CGA and the rationale behind its Use

Rehabilitation robotics faces the challenges of aligning engineering design with patient-specific needs. Most existing controllers in rehabilitation robots often constrain motion to fixed paths or provide only passive guidance, limiting user engagement and adaptability. This study proposes a novel active-assistive mode controller that integrates a virtual tunnel-based force generation mechanism with a dynamic moving-window technique for tracking activities of daily living (ADL) trajectories. Unlike conventional impedance controllers, the proposed method dynamically adjusts the virtual tunnel i
