Tele-Impedance control of a virtual avatar based on EMG and M-IMU sensors: a proof-of-concept.

The broad spread of cooperative robots into many application domains has resulted in a demand for intuitive and effective solutions for teleoperated control. A relevant role in teleoperation has been assumed by impedance controllers, that allow the increase of stability and accuracy during interaction. This paper aims to test a teleoperation method based on an impedance controller, namely tele-impedance control, that is usable in unstructured environments since it relies only on wearable sensors. The proposed solution maps the joint stiffness and position of the human user, computed through si

Assessing the usability of wearable devices to measure gait and physical activity in chronic conditions: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organisation's global strategy for digital health emphasises the importance of patient involvement. Understanding the usability and acceptability of wearable devices is a core component of this. However, usability assessments to date have focused predominantly on healthy adults. There is a need to understand the patient perspective of wearable devices in participants with chronic health conditions. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify any study design that included a usability assessment of wearable devices to measure mobility, through gait and p

The Impact of Control Interface on Features of Heart Rate Variability.

Shared human-robot control for assistive machines can improve the independence of individuals with motor impairments. Monitoring elevated levels of workload can enable the assistive autonomy to adjust the control sharing in an assist-as-needed way, to achieve a balance between user fatigue, stress, and independent control. In this work, we aim to investigate how heart rate variability features can be utilized to monitor elevated levels of mental workload while operating a powered wheelchair, and how that utilization might vary under different control interfaces. To that end, we conduct a 22 pe

Head-Mounted Display-Based Microscopic Imaging System with Customizable Field Size and Viewpoint.

In recent years, the use of microinjections has increased in life science and biotechnology fields; specific examples include artificial insemination and gene manipulation. Microinjections are mainly performed based on visual information; thus, the operator needs high-level skill because of the narrowness of the visual field. Additionally, microinjections are performed as the operator views a microscopic image on a display; the position of the display requires the operator to maintain an awkward posture throughout the procedure. In this study, we developed a microscopic image display apparatus

Optimizing Electric-Field Delivery for tDCS: Virtual Humans Help to Design Efficient, Noninvasive Brain and Spinal Cord Electrical Stimulation.

Noninvasive electrical stimulation of the central nervous system is attracting increasing interest from the clinical and academic communities as well as from high-tech companies. This interest was sparked by two landmark studies conducted in 2000 and 2001 at the University of G?ttingen, Germany. Michael Nitsche and Walter Paulus showed that by passing a weak, almost imperceptible electric current between two electrodes on the scalp, they could alter the way the human brain responds to stimuli and that the effect persisted for some time after the current was stopped. These findings opened the p

Children's perception of gap affordances: bicycling across traffic-filled intersections in an immersive virtual environment.

This study examined gap choices and crossing behavior in children and adults using an immersive, interactive bicycling simulator. Ten- and 12-year-olds and adults rode a bicycle mounted on a stationary trainer through a virtual environment consisting of a street with 6 intersections. Participants faced continuous cross traffic traveling at 25 mph or 35 mph and waited for gaps they judged were adequate for crossing. Children and adults chose the same size temporal gaps, but children left far less time to spare between themselves and the approaching vehicle when they crossed the intersection. Re

An integrated approach to the ergonomic analysis of VR in psychotherapy: panic disorders, agoraphobia and eating disorders.

To face the aspects connected with VR environments usability for psychotherapeutic applications means to dare a double challenge from a methodological point of view: from one side, the need to adapt and to integrate on a heuristic basis classic usability evaluation methods to specific artefacts such as 3D Virtual Environments for clinical applications; from the other hand, the problems arisen by integration of expert evaluation of VR environments user-based tests carried out in real context of use. The theoretical background of our analytical stance is based upon an ethnomethodological approac

Psychometric properties of virtual reality vignette performance measures: a novel approach for assessing adolescents' social competency skills.

This study examined the psychometric properties of performance measures for three novel, interactive virtual reality vignette exercises developed to assess social competency skills of at-risk adolescents. Performance data were collected from 117 African-American male 15-17 year olds. Data for 18 performance measures were obtained, based on adolescents' interaction with a provocative virtual teenage character. Twelve of the 18 performance measures loaded on two factors corresponding to emotional control and interpersonal communication skills, providing support for their factorial validity. The

Brain-computer communication: unlocking the locked in.

With the increasing efficiency of life-support systems and better intensive care, more patients survive severe injuries of the brain and spinal cord. Many of these patients experience locked-in syndrome: The active mind is locked in a paralyzed body. Consequently, communication is extremely restricted or impossible. A muscle-independent communication channel overcomes this problem and is realized through a brain-computer interface, a direct connection between brain and computer. The number of technically elaborated brain-computer interfaces is in contrast with the number of systems used in the

Measurement of postural stability before and after immersion in a virtual environment.

Research into the effects of simulators has led to suggestions that postural instability occurring after immersion in a virtual reality virtual environment (VR/VE) may have direct implications for the safety of post-immersion activities such as driving or operating machinery. However, experimental studies have highlighted a lack of standardisation in the postural stability measurement techniques applied and subsequent inconsistencies in the results obtained. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the use of static, dynamic and posturographic postural stability measures in determining the effe

EpViX: A cloud-based tool for epitope reactivity analysis and epitope virtual crossmatching to identify low immunologic risk donors for sensitized recipients.

One of the challenges facing solid organ transplantation programs globally is the identification of low immunological risk donors for sensitized recipients by HLA allele genotype. Because recognition of donor HLA alleles by host antibodies is at the core of organ rejection, the objective of this work was to develop a new version of the EpHLA software, named EpViX, which uses an HLAMatchmaker algorithm and performs automated epitope virtual crossmatching at the initiation of the organ donation process. EpViX is a free, web-based application developed for use over the internet on a tablet, smart

Are You Sure This is What You Really Want? Conversational Recommender Systems for Enhancing Human Autonomy.

Recommender systems are widely used to help users navigate information overload in digital environments. While they are often portrayed as tools that enhance autonomy by optimizing choice and personalizing content, this article argues that many current recommender systems designs in fact undermine user autonomy. Drawing on a conception of autonomy in which the formation and configuration of preferences, particularly higher-level desires in the Frankfurtian sense, play a prominent role, we examine how dominant recommendation techniques shape users' desires and, to a greater extent, their identi

Voice-Enabled Virtual Patients for Interactive Training in Standardized Clinical Assessment: Mixed Methods Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Training mental health clinicians to conduct standardized clinical assessments is challenging due to a lack of scalable, realistic practice opportunities. Traditional methods often fail to prepare trainees for the variability and complexity of real-world patient interactions, potentially impacting data quality in clinical trials. This paper introduces a novel approach to address this training gap using large language model (LLM)-based interview simulations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a voice-enabled virtual patient simulation system as a proof of concept.

SlicerOrbitSurgerySim: An Open-Source Platform for Virtual Registration and Quantitative Comparison of Preformed Orbital Plates.

Poor adaptation of orbital implants remains a major contributor to postoperative complications and revision surgery. Although preformed orbital plates are widely used to reduce cost and operative time compared with customized implants, surgeons currently lack publicly available tools and standardized metrics to quantitatively compare plate fit across vendors, sizes, and patient anatomy. We developed SlicerOrbitSurgerySim, an open-source extension for the 3-dimensional Slicer platform that enables interactive virtual registration, evaluation, and comparison of multiple preformed orbital plates

SlideRing: Robust Dual-IMU Thumb-to-Finger Text Input for Virtual Reality.

Text entry remains a bottleneck for productivity-oriented Virtual Reality (VR), especially in scenarios where optical hand tracking is unstable because of self-occlusion, poor lighting, or out-of-view interaction. We present SlideRing, a dual-thumb wearable text-entry method that senses thumb-to-finger micro-gestures with two miniature Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs). SlideRing defines a 30-command interaction space from two hands, three target fingers, and five gesture types, then maps these commands to a full alphabetic keyboard through two complementary strategies: an ergonomic layout opt

Oringano: Shared Ring-Based Gestures for Controlling Internet of Things Devices in a Smart Home.

Smart rings are emerging as a promising class of sensing devices that enable unobtrusive, always-available interaction with Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems. These wearable devices support intuitive gesture-based control while minimizing user attention and preserving mobility. However, despite rapid advances in sensing hardware and gesture recognition algorithms, little is known about how users associate ring-based shared gestures with smart-home commands. To fill this gap, this paper presents Oringano, a framework for designing and evaluating a vocabulary of shared ring-based gestures for
