Robotic approach for OHVIRA syndrome: case report of an early diagnosis in a prepubertal girl.

INTRODUCTION: OHVIRA (obstructed hemivagina with ipsilateral renal agenesis) syndrome, also known as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome, is a rare congenital anomaly of the female urogenital tract characterized by uterus didelphys, an obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. It is typically diagnosed at puberty due to cyclic pelvic pain or hematocolpos. Early recognition in childhood is uncommon but may prevent serious complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 1-year-old girl in whom OHVIRA syndrome was incidentally identified during imaging performed for unrelated findings

Hydrometrocolpos in Infants: Etiologies and Clinical Presentations.

Hydrometrocolpos (HMC) is a rare condition where fluids or secretions accumulate in the vagina (hydrocolpos) or up to the uterus (hydrometrocolpos). This case series study reports three infants with different etiologies and presentations of HMC and aims to review literature for proper workup upon initial diagnosis. The first neonate antenatally presented with a huge cystic mass. HMC secondary to imperforate hymen was proved, and hymenotomy was performed at 2 days of age. The second participant presented with persistent urogenital sinus and hematopoietic chimerism, possibly due to transfusion f

Ectopic endometriosis, menstruation, and acute appendicitis: A thought-provoking case.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ectopic endometrium in the appendix is rare. The relationships between ectopic endometrium in the alimentary tract and digestive symptoms and between digestive symptoms due to ectopic endometriosis and periodic menstruation are controversial. We herein describe the successful treatment of acute appendicitis that we suspect was caused by ectopic endometriosis and periodic menstruation. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 38.9-year-old multipara with uterine didelphys developed lower abdominal pain during menstruation, and she was clinically diagnosed with acute appendicitis. S

Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly syndrome: a case series of 4 patients with insights into diagnosis and treatment strategies.

Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly syndrome was first identified by Purslow in 1922 as a result of abnormal embryologic development of the Müllerian (paramesonephric) and Wolffian (mesonephric) ducts. The syndrome typically presents with cyclical lower abdominal pain and abnormal vaginal discharge in postpubertal females. Although the optimal timing and method of surgical treatment remain unclear, resection of the vaginal septum is commonly performed. This article presents 4 previously asymptomatic patients who developed an acute abdomen after menarche and were treated with hy

Reproductive tract and pouch anatomical variability across the reproductive phases in female common opossum (Didelphis marsupialis Linnaeus, 1758).

Colombia's diverse ecosystems are home to various marsupial species known for its distinctive reproductive traits. Limited research has explored the reproductive anatomy of Didelphis marsupialis, particularly regarding variations associated with reproductive phase. This study aimed to characterize the reproductive anatomy of female D. marsupialis and assess its relationship with reproductive phases. We analyzed 57 female opossum cadavers using dissection, histology, and biometry. Specimens were classified by life stage based on dental chronology and by reproductive phase-interestrus, prolifera

New Consideration of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome Diagnosed by Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVES: As a rare malformation of the female reproductive system, Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) was categorized into 3 classifications. It was recommended recently that, on the basis of the past classification, cervicovaginal atresia without communicating uteri should be newly added as classification 4. The surgical intervention will differ by type. To better optimize patient counseling as well as the preoperative evaluation and planning, our objective was to describe the ultrasound characteristics of each type of HWWS, including the new type. METHODS: From January 1995 to Nove

Symmetry breakage in the development of one-armed gonads in nematodes.

Whereas the hermaphrodite gonad of Caenorhabditis elegans has two symmetric arms (didelphy), the female/hermaphrodite gonad of many nematode species features a single anterior arm (monodelphy). We examined how gonadal cell lineages and intercellular signalling evolve to generate these diverse structures. In C. elegans, the two arms develop symmetrically from two somatic precursor cells, Z1 (anterior) and Z4 (posterior). Each first gives rise to one distal tip cell (which promotes arm growth and germ line proliferation), two ovary precursors and three uterine precursors in the center of the dev

Surgical Management of OHVIRA and Outcomes.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly (OHVIRA) includes uterine didelphys, unilateral obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal anomaly. Surgical management of this condition relies on accurate diagnosis to excise the obstructed longitudinal vaginal septum (OLVS). Vital considerations involve identifying the side affected, ipsilateral renal anomaly (IRA), thickness of the septum (TS), septal axis (SA), and distance of the septum to perineum (DSP). The study aimed to evaluate the preoperative characteristics, imaging findings, and surgical outcomes of OHVIRA.

The Role of Laparoscopic Surgery in Gynecological Congenital Anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Müllerian duct anomalies (MDAs) comprise a heterogeneous group of congenital malformations of the uterus, cervix and vagina that can impair menstruation, sexual function and fertility. Over the past three decades, minimally invasive techniques have largely replaced laparotomy for their surgical management; yet, data remain fragmented across small series and diverse anomaly types. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize contemporary evidence on laparoscopic and robotic management of MDAs, highlighting indications, key surgical techniques and reproductive and functional outcomes, while addressing
