For millennia, humans have sought and found purpose, solace, values, understanding, and fellowship in religious practices. Buddhist nuns performed variolation against smallpox over 1000 years ago. Since Jenner developed vaccination against smallpox in 1796, some people have objected to and declined vaccination, citing various religious reasons. This paper reviews the scriptural, canonical basis for such interpretations, as well as passages that support immunization. Populous faith traditions are considered, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Subjects of co

The boycott of polio vaccination in three Northern Nigerian states in 2003 created a global health crisis that was political in origin. This paper traces the diplomatic actions that were taken by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the United Nations, and the U.S. government, to restart polio vaccination and resolve the crisis. The polio vaccination boycott in Northern Nigeria provides a useful case study of the practice of global health diplomacy.

Recent instances of governments and others refusing humanitarian assistance to refugees and IDPs (internally-displaced persons) unless they agreed to polio immunization for their children raise difficult ethical challenges. The authors argue that states have the right and a responsibility to require such vaccinations in instances where the serious vaccine-preventable disease(s) at issue threaten others, including local populations, humanitarian workers, and others in camps or support settings.

Vaccines have saved millions of lives and reduced the severity of many infections. A reduction in vaccination coverage is now reflected in the re-emergence of epidemics of mumps, pertussis, measles and chickenpox. Many people do not recognize the effectiveness of vaccination and fear the side effects. The main concern is the safety of vaccines. Lack of information weighs less than lack of trust in health authorities. The greater responsibility of the individual and the respect for his free will, may lead the authorities to a less vigourous promotion of the "vaccination duty" which is also a so

OBJECTIVE: This review synthesizes qualitative research about the experiences of parental caregivers enhancing their children's health after making the decision to not vaccinate their preschool children. This review aims to help health care providers understand the parental work involved in caring for under-vaccinated or unvaccinated children.
INTRODUCTION: Much of the current qualitative research literature about parents who are vaccine-hesitant or who decide not to vaccinate their children focuses on parental perceptions about the safety and efficacy of vaccines and decision-making. However

BACKGROUND: In light of the public health emergency brought about by the novel coronavirus, health authorities actively promoted vaccination against SARS-CoV-2. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the forefront critical questions concerning individual freedoms and the right to consent or decline vaccination. To better anticipate and manage future epidemics, it is essential to engage in thoughtful philosophical and ethical reflection-particularly regarding the legitimacy and implications of vaccine passport policies.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and hesit

OBJECTIVE: During the second half of the 1990s and the first years of the 2000s a declining coverage for MMR vaccination in two-year-olds was observed in Sweden. The aim was to assess reasons for postponement or non-vaccination.
DESIGN: A telephone survey using a structured questionnaire on parents' attitudes regarding their choice to postpone or abstain from vaccinating their child.
SETTING: The County of Ostergötland in Sweden.
SUBJECTS: A total of 203 parents of children who had no registered date for MMR vaccination at a Child Health Centre.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Parental reasons for

This study addressed whether whole cell pertussis-vaccinated children have a different risk of atopic disorders compared with children who did not receive this vaccination. Data on vaccination status, atopic disorders and child and family characteristics of the children of 700 families were collected in this retrospective study. A minority of these 700 families refused vaccinations for religious reasons. The relation between pertussis-vaccination status and atopic disorders was analysed by means of adjusted logistic regression for repeated measurements in order to account for the correlation b

Widespread varicella vaccination in Canada since 2007 has changed the epidemiology of chickenpox, with a significant decline in varicella-related hospitalizations. However, there will always be a varicella-susceptible population because of immune-compromising treatments or conditions and/or parental vaccine refusal. This document updates and replaces a 1999 statement by the Canadian Paediatric Society. The CPS position on school and child care exclusion policies has not changed since the original statement, but because there have been two published reports of varicella outbreaks associated wit

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to understand factors that influence the decision-making process of Brazilian pregnant women to receive a COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey between August and December 2023 in two Brazilian cities. Pregnant women aged ≥18 years or emancipated attending antenatal care at public facilities were invited to participate. Those eligible completed a structured questionnaire developed and validated by Johns Hopkins University, covering sociodemographic characteristics, COVID-19 vaccination history, attitudes, beliefs, and reasons fo

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood cancer (CCS) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients are at increased risk of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated malignancies. Although HPV vaccination is recommended for these groups, parental acceptance remains uncertain.
PROCEDURE: We recruited caregivers of female CCS/HSCT aged ≥9 years from the Shanghai Children's Medical Center (SCMC) vaccination clinic. Caregivers of females who were at least 6 months post treatment, off immunosuppressants, and disease-free were eligible. Caregivers completed a questionnaire assessing demograp

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination hesitancy is a threat as COVID-19 vaccines have reduced both viral transmission and virus-associated mortality rates, particularly in high-risk subgroups. Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) are particularly vulnerable, as the underlying causes of their organ failure and the chronic immunosuppression are associated with a lower immune response to COVID-19 vaccines, and with an excessive risk of death due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. We aimed to evaluate COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy and its reasons in a population of SOTRs.

This study evaluated the impact of transferring the thirteen‑year tetanus-diphtheria booster from schools to Family Health Centers on vaccination coverage after 1 July 2020. In a two‑component descriptive cross‑sectional design conducted in the central districts of Şanlıurfa Province, annual non‑vaccination from 2018 to 2022 was tracked using administrative records; in addition, reasons for non‑vaccination were classified through face‑to‑face interviews with family physicians and on‑screen verification in nineteen Family Medicine Units selected by two‑stage stratified sampling. The primary out

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are at higher risk of vaccine-preventable respiratory infections. However, advanced, homebound individuals may have less access to vaccinations. In light of COVID-19, understanding barriers to vaccination in PD may inform strategies to increase vaccine uptake.
OBJECTIVE: To identify influenza and pneumococcal vaccination rates, including barriers and facilitators to vaccination, among homebound and ambulatory individuals with PD and related disorders.
METHODS: Cross-sectional US-based study among individuals with PD, aged > 65 years, stratif

OBJECTIVE: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends intramuscular (IM) vitamin K prophylaxis for all newborns to prevent vitamin K deficiency bleeding. Given the serious implications of late-onset vitamin K deficiency bleeding, our objective was to examine factors influencing parents' decisions to refuse IM vitamin K prophylaxis.
METHODS: Parents intending to refuse IM vitamin K prophylaxis at delivery were recruited from 5 community hospitals, 1 academic medical center, and 2 birthing centers in a single Southeastern state. Participants completed a written survey including demographics,

Problems in the delivery of antituberculosis care to the pediatric population of Moscow are analyzed. Databases are set up by the statutory forms available in the city's tuberculosis dispensaries and by additional analytical tables from pediatric therapeutic-and-prophylactic institutions, such as children's local polyclinics. In Moscow, there was a reduction in the vaccination coverage of healthy neonatal infants at their discharge from maternity hospitals and departments over a number of years (88.0% in 2008 and 90.3% in 2005). The proportion of non-vaccinated neonates due to their parents' r
