Multi-step column leaching using low-molecular-weight organic acids for remediating vanadium- and chromium-contaminated soil.

In soil, vanadium (V) contamination is commonly concomitant with chromium (Cr) contamination, which poses potential risks to humans, animals, and plants due to the transfer of toxic metals and the increase in their concentrations via the food chain or through direct exposure. This study applied a multi-step column leaching process using low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) to treat V-contaminated soil from a smelter site that contains 2015.1 mg V kg-1 and 1060.3 mg Cr kg-1. After leaching three times with an equivalent solution/soil ratio of 0.3 mL/g using 1.0 M oxalic acid solution, th

One-pot synthesis of vanadium-containing silica SBA-3 materials and their catalytic activity for propene oxidation.

V-containing silica SBA-3 mesoporous catalysts were prepared by means of one-pot hydrothermal procedure with NH4VO3 or VOSO4 as vanadium precursors under various acidic medium of the reaction mixture (pH < 1, 2.2 or 3.1). The combined spectral techniques (DR UV-vis, FTIR, EPR) as well H2-TPR allowed to determine the nature of vanadium species in the studied samples. A successful incorporation of vanadium into the structure of silica SBA-3 was attained for the samples with low V content (<1 wt%), whereas the V-rich samples (i.e. >5 wt%) exhibited the presence of isolated vanadium and also of po

Hole Extraction by Design in Photocatalytic Architectures Interfacing CdSe Quantum Dots with Topochemically Stabilized Tin Vanadium Oxide.

Tackling the complex challenge of harvesting solar energy to generate energy-dense fuels such as hydrogen requires the design of photocatalytic nanoarchitectures interfacing components that synergistically mediate a closely interlinked sequence of light-harvesting, charge separation, charge/mass transport, and catalytic processes. The design of such architectures requires careful consideration of both thermodynamic offsets and interfacial charge-transfer kinetics to ensure long-lived charge carriers that can be delivered at low overpotentials to the appropriate catalytic sites while mitigating

Removal of toxic metals from vanadium-contaminated soils using a washing method: Reagent selection and parameter optimization.

Vanadium (V) contamination in soils is an increasing worldwide concern facing human health and environmental conservation. The fractionation of a metal influences its mobility and biological toxicity. We analyzed the fractionations of V and several other metals using the BCR three-step sequential extraction procedure. Among methods for removing metal contamination, soil washing is an effective permanent treatment. We conducted experiments to select the proper reagents and to optimize extraction conditions. Citric acid, tartaric acid, oxalic acid, and Na2EDTA all exhibited high removal rates of

Vanadium(V) complex with Schiff-base ligand containing a flexible amino side chain: Synthesis, structure and reactivity.

The Schiff-base ligand (H2salhyhNH3)Cl (1) derived from salicylaldehyde and 6-aminohexanoic acid hydrazide hydrochloride reacts with ammonium metavanadate in methanol solution to yield the dioxidovanadium(V) complex [VO2(salhyhNH3)] (2). The utilized hydrazone ligand contains a flexible and protonated amino side chain. Crystallization from methanol affords complex 2 in the monoclinic space group P21/n, whereas crystallization from a methanol/water mixture 1:1 yields crystals, containing a water molecule of crystallization per two formula units (2⋅1/2H2O), in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn.

Assessing vanadium and arsenic exposure of people living near a petrochemical complex with two-stage dispersion models.

The goal of this study is to demonstrate that it is possible to construct a two-stage dispersion model empirically for the purpose of estimating air pollution levels in the vicinity of petrochemical plants. We studied oil refineries and coal-fired power plants in the No. 6 Naphtha Cracking Complex, an area of 2,603-ha situated on the central west coast of Taiwan. The pollutants targeted were vanadium (V) from oil refineries and arsenic (As) from coal-fired power plants. We applied a backward fitting method to determine emission rates of V and As, with 192 PM10 filters originally collected betw

A novel insulin mimetic vanadium-flavonol complex: synthesis, characterization and in vivo evaluation in STZ-induced rats.

Since 1985, when Heyliger et al., first demonstrated a serendipitous discovery that oral administration of 0.8 mg/ml of sodium orthovanadate in drinking water to streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats resulted in normoglycemia, numerous extensive studies have been pursued on the anti-diabetic and insulinomimetic actions of vanadium. The acceptance of vanadium compounds as promising therapeutic antidiabetic agents has been slowed due to the concern for chronic toxicity associated with vanadium accumulation. In order to circumvent the toxic effects of vanadium, we have taken up a combinational app

Toxicological aspects of vanadyl sulphate on diabetic rats: effects on vanadium levels and pancreatic B-cell morphology.

This study explored some toxicological aspects of vanadyl sulphate (VOSO4) treatment of rats made diabetic with a single intravenous injection of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg). Administered in drinking water (0.25, 0.5, 0.75 or 1 mg of VOSO4, 5H2O ml) VOSO4 treatment partially or totally corrected some of the alterations associated with the diabetic state (hyperglycaemia, polydipsia, polyphagia, high cholesterol and triglycerides levels) and did not produce any changes in various plasma or blood cell parameters which were not previously altered by diabetes. Measurement of vanadium levels indicated

Bioaccessibility of vanadium in respiratory inhalation and skin contact routes by in vitro biomimetic simulations and environmental risk assessment.

Vanadium (V), a toxic element with multiple valence states, is widely distributed in the earth's crust and can be released into the environment through various human activities, posing potential health risks to humans. Understanding the bioaccessibility of V is crucial for assessing its potential toxicity and health risks. This study investigated the bioaccessibility of V via respiratory inhalation and dermal contact using in vitro biomimetic simulations. Results showed significant variations in V bioaccessibility among different sample types, V valence states, and exposure pathways. For respi

In silico development of an inflammation-triggered β-cyclodextrin carrier for a redox-active vanadium-INAP-tryptophan complex.

Inflammation-driven diseases are characterized by localized oxidative stress, acidosis, and hyperthermia-microenvironmental features that often compromise the effectiveness of conventional anti-inflammatory therapies due to poor site selectivity and uncontrolled systemic exposure. In this context, the present study provides an exclusively in silico investigation of an inflammation-responsive drug delivery concept based on β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) encapsulation of a redox-active vanadium complex, VO-INAP-tryptophan. Leveraging the supramolecular host-guest properties of β-CD, the computational mod

Modulating Built-In Electric Field Strength in an In2S3/CdS Heterojunction via Vanadium Doping for a Photoelectrochemical Immunoassay.

Constructing a built-in electric field (BIEF) in heterojunctions is regarded as an effective strategy for improving photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance since it acts as a key factor in accelerating charge transfer and separation. Herein, a PEC immunosensor with excellent target responsiveness was presented based on vanadium-doped indium sulfide/cadmium sulfide (V-In2S3/CdS) heterojunctions with a giant BIEF and excellent peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity. The BIEF strength of the heterojunction can be effectively modulated by V doping to facilitate rapid charge transfer and separation, re

Salivary Levels of Titanium, Nickel, Vanadium, and Arsenic in Patients Treated with Dental Implants: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Recent articles have hypothesized a possible correlation between dental implants dissolution products and peri-implantitis. The null hypothesis tested in this case-control study was that there would be no differences in salivary concentrations of titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), nickel (Ni) and arsenic (As) ions among patients with dental implants, healthy (Group A) or affected by peri-implantitis (Group B), compared to subjects without implants and/or metallic prosthetic restorations (Group C). METHODS: Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to analyze saliva samples.

Urinary arsenic, cadmium, manganese, nickel, and vanadium levels of schoolchildren in the vicinity of the industrialised area of Asaluyeh, Iran.

Asaluyeh is one of the most heavily industrialised areas in the world where gas, petrochemical, and many downstream industries are located. This study aims to survey the biomonitoring of four metals and one metalloid in children living in the vicinity of Asaluyeh area. To do this, we analysed the creatinine-adjusted urinary levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), vanadium (V), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni) in 184 elementary schoolchildren (99 boys and 85 girls) living in Asaluyeh and compared them with a reference population. The comparisons were done for two seasons (spring and fall). The res

Effects of metal compounds with distinct physicochemical properties on iron homeostasis and antibacterial activity in the lungs: chromium and vanadium.

In situ reactions of metal ions or their compounds are important mechanisms by which particles alter lung immune responses. The authors hypothesized that major determinants of the immunomodulatory effect of any metal include its redox behavior/properties, oxidation state, and/or solubility, and that the toxicities arising from differences in physicochemical parameters are manifest, in part, via differential shifts in lung iron (Fe) homeostasis. To test the hypotheses, immunomodulatory potentials for both pentavalent vanadium (VV; as soluble metavanadate or insoluble vanadium pentoxide) and hex

Coupled environmental behaviors of vanadium and organic matter during Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation in mining areas.

Vanadium (V), as a heavy metal, has different valence states that impose potential risks to ecosystems, and its occurrence is closely associated with organic carbon (OC), but it is still ambiguous how V and OC interact and influence their environmental behavior, especially in mining regions. We selected humic acid and simple organic acids as model OC compounds to synthesize Fh-organominerals, and then conducted the Fe(II)-induced transformation experiments in the presence of V to investigate the redistribution of V(IV) and V (V) and OC. The results show that V(V) is more easily encapsulated wi

First-Principles Study on the High Spin-Polarized Ferromagnetic Semiconductor of Vanadium-Nitride Monolayer and Its Heterostructures.

The newly discovered 2D spin-gapless magnetic materials, which provide new opportunities for combining spin polarization and the quantum anomalous Hall effect, provide a new method for the design and application of memory and nanoscale devices. However, a low Curie temperature (TC) is a common limitation in most 2D ferromagnetic materials, and research on the topological properties of nontrivial 2D spin-gapless materials is still limited. We predict a novel spin-gapless semiconductor of monolayer h-VN, which has a high Curie temperature (~543 K), 100% spin polarization, and nontrivial topologi
