Phosphine Generation Pathways on Rocky Planets.

The possibility of life in the venusian clouds was proposed in the 1960s, and recently this hypothesis has been revived with the potential detection of phosphine (PH3) in Venus' atmosphere. These observations may have detected ∼5-20 ppb phosphine on Venus (Greaves et al., 2020), which raises questions about venusian atmospheric/geochemical processes and suggests that this phosphine could possibly be generated by biological processes. In such a claim, it is essential to understand the abiotic phosphorus chemistry that may occur under Venus-relevant conditions, particularly those processes that

A Pay-It-Forward Approach to Improve Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Testing Uptake Among Female Sex Workers in China: Venue-Based Superiority Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Regular chlamydia and gonorrhea testing are essential for key populations, such as female sex workers (FSWs). However, testing cost, stigma, and lack of access prevent FSWs in low- and middle-income countries from receiving chlamydia and gonorrhea testing. A social innovation to address these problems is "pay it forward," where an individual receives a gift (free testing) and then asks whether they would like to give a gift to another person in the community. OBJECTIVE: This cluster randomized controlled trial examined the effectiveness and cost of the pay-it-forward strategy in i

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms mediate the relationship between traumatic experiences and drinking behavior among women attending alcohol-serving venues in a South African township.

OBJECTIVE: South Africa has high rates of traumatic experiences and alcohol abuse or dependence, especially among women. Traumatic experiences often result in symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and PTSD has been associated with hazardous drinking. This article examines the relationship between traumatic events and hazardous drinking among women who patronized alcohol-serving venues in South Africa and examines PTSD as a mediator of this relationship. METHOD: A total of 560 women were recruited from a Cape Town township. They completed a computerized assessment that included alc

Altered differentiation of enteric neural crest-derived cells from endothelin receptor-B null mouse model of Hirschsprung's disease.

PURPOSE: Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is caused by a failure of enteric neural crest-derived cells (ENCC) to colonize the bowel, resulting in an absence of the enteric nervous system (ENS). Previously, we developed a Sox10 transgenic version of the Endothelin receptor-B (Ednrb) mouse to visualize ENCC with the green fluorescent protein, Venus. The aim of this study was to isolate Sox10-Venus+ cells, which are differentiated neurons and glial cells in the ENS, and analyze these cells using Sox10-Venus mice gut. METHODS: The mid-and hindgut of Sox10-Venus+/Ednrb +/+ and Sox10-Venus+/Ednrb -/- at

Early Outcomes of Self-Expandable Versus Balloon-Expandable Valves for Managing Dysfunctional Right Ventricular Outflow Tracts.

BACKGROUND: Self-expandable valves are emerging complements to balloon-expandable valves for transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement in dysfunctional right ventricular outflow tracts, though their safety and efficacy remain underexplored. We aim to compare patient characteristics and outcomes of self-expandable valves and balloon-expandable valves in transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement. METHODS: Baseline and early follow-up data were prospectively analyzed for 145 patients who underwent transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement with Edwards SAPIEN 3 (ES3) balloon-expandable valves or

VenUS IV (Venous leg Ulcer Study IV) - compression hosiery compared with compression bandaging in the treatment of venous leg ulcers: a randomised controlled trial, mixed-treatment comparison and decision-analytic model.

BACKGROUND: Compression is an effective and recommended treatment for venous leg ulcers. Although the four-layer bandage (4LB) is regarded as the gold standard compression system, it is recognised that the amount of compression delivered might be compromised by poor application technique. Also the bulky nature of the bandages might reduce ankle or leg mobility and make the wearing of shoes difficult. Two-layer compression hosiery systems are now available for the treatment of venous leg ulcers. Two-layer hosiery (HH) may be advantageous, as it has reduced bulk, which might enhance ankle or leg

Proposed Missions to Collect Samples for Analyzing Evidence of Life in the Venusian Atmosphere.

The recent and still controversial claim of phosphine detection in the venusian atmosphere has reignited consideration of whether microbial life might reside in its cloud layers. If microbial life were to exist within Venus' cloud deck, these microorganisms would have to be multi-extremophiles enclosed within the cloud aerosol particles. The most straightforward approach for resolving the question of their existence is to obtain samples of the cloud particles and analyze their interior. While developing technology has made sophisticated in situ analysis possible, more detailed information coul
