Military service has many possible consequences for an individual's health. However, the health needs of veterans are not well understood by healthcare professionals. A veteran may present with overlapping symptoms of mental and physical ill health. Problems such as hazardous levels of alcohol consumption and aggressive behaviour may be evident alongside anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain and disfigurement. Female veterans may present with other complex health issues, such as military sexual trauma. The author suggests that pre-registration curricula for all heal

Highlights are presented on the issue of drug use among servicemen in Vietnam and its aftereffects. Two stages of Vietnam drug use are identified-a period of increasing marijuana use followed by the 1970 influx of highly potent heroin to which 1/5 of the enlisted troops were addicted at some time during their tour. The major contributing factors appear to be: (1) the need of troops in stressful combat situations for self-medication, escape, and hedonistic indulgence; (2) the relaxation of taboos against drug use in the United States; and (3) the availability of illicit drugs at low cost, which

The purpose of this study was to compare the current U.S. Veteran Affairs (VA) contingency management incentives (vouchers to the VA Canteen) against other incentives for inducing intentions to use alcohol. Theory indicates that other incentives, such as debit cards, could be more effective at reducing drinking intentions. Sixty U.S. Armed Forces veterans who reported hazardous alcohol use were recruited for a virtual study through Prolific crowdsourcing. Participants responded on a 0-100 Likert scale of how likely they were to abstain from drinking if offered increasing compensation by vouche

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) significantly impacts US Veterans' well-being by potentially exacerbating health-related social needs (HRSN). This study investigated short- and long-term associations between PTSD diagnosis and nine HRSN indicators.
METHODS: Utilizing national Veterans Health Administration (VHA) electronic health record (EHR) data, we employed dual designs. A cross-sectional analysis included 62,298 Veterans (PTSD diagnosed in fiscal year [FY] 2012 vs. non-PTSD), matched on key demographic and comorbidity factors. A retrospective cohort followed 11,758 prope

Background/Objectives: Currently, 873,000 patients within the VA Health Administration potentially have prediabetes, based on HbA1c. The primary objective of this analysis was to describe and compare Veterans with and without a documented prediabetes diagnosis, across age, sex, race, rurality, and select comorbidities. Secondary objectives included the following: (1) Identify prediabetes diagnosis documentation trends between the VISN 6 facility complexity and (2) evaluate the relationship between specific prescribed medication classes for Veterans and a documented prediabetes diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: To examine Black-White patient differences in mortality and other hospital outcomes among Veterans treated in Veterans Affairs (VA) and non-VA hospitals.
BACKGROUND: Lower hospital mortality has been documented in older Black patients relative to White patients, yet the mechanisms have not been determined. Comparing other hospital outcomes and multiple hospital systems may help inform the reasons for these differences.
METHODS: Repeated cross-sectional analysis of hospitalization records was conducted for Veterans discharged in VA and non-VA hospitals from January 1, 2013 to Dece

INTRODUCTION: Black women with uterine fibroids experience greater symptom severity and worse treatment outcomes compared with their White counterparts. Black veterans who use Veterans Health Administration (VA) health care experience similar disparities. This study investigated the experiences of Black veterans receiving care for uterine fibroids at VA.
METHODS: We identified Black veterans aged 18 to 54 years with newly diagnosed symptomatic uterine fibroids between the fiscal years 2010 and 2012 using VA medical record data, and we recruited participants for interviews in 2021. We used pur

Background: Sexual assault affects one in three U.S. women and may have lifelong consequences for women's health, including potential barriers to completing cervical cancer screening and more than twofold higher cervical cancer risk. The objective of this study was to determine whether a history of sexual assault is associated with reduced cervical cancer screening completion among women Veterans. Materials and Methods: We analyzed data from a 2015 survey of women Veterans who use primary care or women's health services at 12 Veterans Health Administration facilities (VA's) in nine states. We

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an evidence-based treatment for pharmacoresistant major depressive disorder (MDD), however, the evidence in veterans has been mixed. To this end, VA implemented a nationwide TMS program that included evaluating clinical outcomes within a naturalistic design. TMS was hypothesized to be safe and provide clinically meaningful reductions in MDD and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.
METHODS: Inclusion criteria were MDD diagnosis and standard clinical TMS eligibility. Of the 770 patients enrolled between October 2017 and

Background HIV infection and depression are each associated with increased ischemic stroke risk. Whether depression is a risk factor for stroke within the HIV population is unknown. Methods and Results We analyzed data on 106 333 (33 528 HIV-positive; 72 805 HIV-negative) people who were free of baseline cardiovascular disease from an observational cohort of HIV-positive people and matched uninfected veterans in care from April 1, 2003 through December 31, 2014. International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes from medical records were used to determine baseline depressio

BACKGROUND: Military combat trauma is often associated with negative outcomes, including high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Less is known, however, about whether military combat trauma may foster posttraumatic growth (PTG), which has been observed in relation to other trauma types, in representative samples of veterans.
METHODS: We analyzed data from veterans who participated in the National Health and Resilience in veterans Study who reported a military-related trauma (n = 210). Participants completed measures of trauma history, combat exposure, PTSD symptoms, PTG, functioni

OBJECTIVE: To identify sociodemographic and military characteristics of combat-exposed and non-combat-exposed veterans in the United States and to compare rates of mental and physical health conditions in these populations.
METHODS: Data were analyzed from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (NHRVS), a contemporary, nationally representative survey of 1,480 US veterans conducted September-October 2013. Poststratification weights were applied to analyses to permit generalizability of results to the US veteran population. Outcomes measured included lifetime and current psychiat

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can slow disease progression. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)/Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG), established to improve patient outcomes, recommend the use of spirometry in the COPD diagnostic process. The aims of this study were to assess VA health care providers' performance related to CPG-recommended spirometry administration in the evaluation of newly diagnosed COPD among veterans, determine the patient characteristics that may influence the adherence rate, and compare V

INTRODUCTION: The epidemiology of breast cancer among men is poorly characterized. As the Veterans Health Administration (VA) serves a disproportionally male population, a larger percentage of breast cancer cases diagnosed and treated in VA are among male patients. However, whether current breast oncology operational infrastructure is prepared to address this need is unclear.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The VA Breast and Gynecologic Oncology System of Excellence (BGSoE) established a tracking dashboard for all incident breast and gynecologic malignancies in VA in 2021. All breast surgery cases wit
