Recent technologic advances have contributed to a renewed interest in thoracoscopic surgery. In our institution, thoracoscopy through video-assisted technology has been successfully applied to congenital heart surgery. We reviewed the charts of 45 consecutive patients (ASA physical status 11-IV) who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for various congenital heart defects. The mean age of the patients was 2.65 yr and the mean weight was 11.78 kg. The surgical procedures included patent ductus arteriosus interruption (n = 28) and vascular ring division (n = 8), and 9 patients h

INTRODUCTION: Dorsally displaced distal radius fractures are among the most common orthopedic injuries, requiring surgical techniques that ensure optimal functional recovery while minimizing complications. The traditional method of volar locking plate osteosynthesis, although considered the gold standard, often requires a multidisciplinary surgical team. In the context of staff shortages and the need to optimize resources, this work presents a technique that can be performed by a single surgeon, particularly suited for young practitioners. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that dis

Intrathoracic metastasis of ovarian cancer has poor prognosis regardless of treatment modality. Recent development of surgical techniques and the new concept of direct infusion of chemotherapeutic agents with hyperthermia could help with the treatment of disseminated diseases in ovarian cancer. Using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and intracavitary chemotherapy with hyperthermia, we tried hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy for a case of stage IV high-grade serous ovarian cancer with pleural metastasis. There was no high-grade complication related to the procedure. The patient is ali

Background: Minimally invasive thoracic surgery has advanced since the introduction of multiportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (mVATS) in 1991. Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is an ideal condition for refining minimally invasive techniques owing to its straightforward procedures and predictable bullae distributions. Methods: Uniportal VATS (uVATS), which involves a single incision, is an alternative to mVATS, offering reduced postoperative pain, lower paresthesia rates, and comparable recurrence outcomes. This review explores two main uVATS approaches: intercostal and subxipho

Robot-assisted thoracic surgery( RATS) has become widely adopted as a standard minimally invasive approach for lung cancer surgery. While bronchoplasty has traditionally been performed via thoracotomy or video-assisted thoracic surgery( VATS), its application under robotic assistance remains limited, and practical experience has yet to be fully established. Our institution introduced RATS in 2018 and has accumulated substantial experience with standardized surgical procedures. After sufficient experience was obtained, bronchoplasty using the da Vinci system was introduced in a planned manner f

Complete thymectomy plays an important role in the myasthenia gravis (MG) pacient's treatment. Many different surgical techniques have been developed to achieve thymectomy. Of these, thoracoscopic technique is the most recent. There still are many controversies about the most suitable approach for thymectomy. The paper presents in detail the video-assisted thoracoscopic extended thymectomy--VATET-technique, and initial results with this procedure. Prospective data was obtain according to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) recommendations. From Mai 2007 to December 2009, 15 pati

This report describes transoesophageal echocardiographic (TEE) monitoring in a one-year-old boy undergoing patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) interruption. After application of a first vascular clip, echocardiographic monitoring detected incomplete interruption of ductal flow, prompting the surgeon to add a second clip to the ductus. The procedure was performed via a new surgical technique: video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This innovative approach offers many advantages to patient care including reduced postoperative pain and better preservation of pulmonary function. We conclude that

Diaphragmatic eventration causes respiratory distress with the development of severe diaphragmatic compression of lung volume. While non-surgical treatment, such as physical therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation, is adequate for mild cases, surgical intervention is critical for severe diaphragmatic eventration. A 45-year-old man with respiratory fatigue was diagnosed with left diaphragmatic eventration and underwent surgery with diaphragmatic plication with double-row stapling under a video-assisted approach. Thoracoscopy with laparoscopic image display avoided visceral tissue involvement, and

In addition to qualitative establishment of diagnosis the aim of modern investigational procedures is quantitative analysis of disease extension and of functional impairment. The most important endoscopic-bioptical techniques for establishment of diagnosis are bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy. In bronchology flexible bronchoscopy with a relative share of about 90% clearly holds now a dominant position versus the rigid technique. Suspected cancer is the most prominent indication (ca. 60%). Visible intrabronchial lesions can be diagnosed in more than 90%. In extrabronchial and peripheral bronchopul

INTRODUCTION: Persisting diaphragmatic dysfunction (DD) for more than 24 hours after thoracic surgery is associated with higher rates of pulmonary complications and prolonged intensive care unit stays. Despite advances in less invasive techniques, the incidence of DD remains significant, affecting ~55%-68% of patients after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Non-intubated VATS (NIVATS) has gained popularity for its safety, but its impact on outcomes, particularly DD, remains unclear. We aim to determine the incidence of DD following NIVATS in adult patients.

PURPOSE: Rib fixation remains a contentious issue in the current practice of orthopaedic, trauma and thoracic surgeons. Whilst rib fractures are undoubtedly associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality, the optimal surgical approach has not yet been fully elucidated in prospective trials and the volume of procedures performed remains low.
METHODS: We evaluated 21 consecutive patients who underwent surgical rib fixation either via a standard thoracotomy approach or following the introduction of a video-assisted technique with minimal thoracic incisions.
RESULTS: The average age of p

BACKGROUND: Transanal endoscopic microsurgery is a safe and efficacious surgical approach for local excision of benign adenomas and early-stage rectal cancer. However, utilization of the technique has been limited due to the unavailability of high-priced specialized instrumentation at many institutions and the technically demanding training required. To avoid these obstacles, we have explored an alternative approach called Transanal Endoscopic Video-Assisted excision, which combines the merits of singleport access and local transanal excision.
METHODS: A disposable single-incision port is ins

PURPOSE: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive approach widely used for lung resections. However, reliance on staplers increases costs, limiting its adoption in resource-constrained settings. This study evaluates the feasibility, safety, and cost-effectiveness of uniportal stapler-less VATS lobectomies and segmentectomies.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 7 stapler-less uniportal VATS surgeries performed between March 2021 and February 2022 was conducted. Data on operative time, blood loss, postoperative outcomes, and complications were collected from patient

Esophageal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (E-GIST) are very rare tumors, and there is no consensus regarding the optimal surgical approach for E-GISTs. Here, we report a case of a large E-GIST that was resected via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS). When examining for comorbidities of myasthenia gravis using computed tomography, a 7-cm-sized tumor was detected in the lower esophagus of a 68-year-old woman. Further examination revealed the tumor to be an E-GIST with high malignant potential, and thus, esophagectomy was performed. The hybr

BACKGROUND: Diaphragm paralysis after cardiac surgery may be secondary to phrenic nerve injury by ice, electrocautery, or dissection. Although most are asymptomatic, some patients, particularly children, have significant respiratory compromise. Video-assisted plication may offer more rapid improvement and recovery than thoracotomy in pediatric patients.
METHODS: We performed five procedures. The diaphragm was elevated, clamped, oversewn, and tacked down into the pleural gutter. The procedure was performed on 2 infants after repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, on 1 child aft

This video vignette demonstrates a robotic sigmoid colectomy with iso-peristaltic intracorporeal colo-colonic anastomosis (ICA) utilising DaVinci Xi® platform. The dissection employs an'inferior mesenteric vein first(IMV) approach', a structured technique for training in robotic assisted left sided colon and rectal resections. Robotic ICA offers advantages over extracorporeal anastomosis, enabling the surgeon to remain at the console for the entire procedure, thus enhancing surgical flow. Based on the literature ICA technique potentially improves patient outcomes, with reported reduction in in

INTRODUCTION: Bladder neck dissection is one of the most delicate surgical steps of robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) [1, 2], and it may affect surgical margins rate and functional outcomes [3, 4]. Given the relationship between outcomes and surgical experience [5-7], it is crucial to implement a step-by-step approach for each surgical step of the procedure, especially in the most challenging part of the intervention. In this video compilation, we described the techniques for bladder neck dissection utilized at OLV Hospital (Aalst, Belgium).
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: We illustrated five
