Adaptive mechanisms of developing social connectedness in virtual reality environments.

Loneliness and social isolation, only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, are pressing societal challenges. Social Virtual Reality (SVR), as a form of social technology, can be seen as one of the alternatives for those unable to engage in traditional in-person interactions. This paper explores the dynamics of the development of social connectedness in SVR environments, highlighting the roles of embodiment, gestures, and non-verbal cues. The study reveals that the social connectedness in SVR unfolds through three formative phases and that the transition of social spaces from physical to virtu

WarpVision: Using Spatial Curvature to Guide Attention in Virtual Reality.

With the advent of consumer-targeted, low-cost virtual reality devices and facile authoring technologies, the development and design of experiences in virtual reality are also becoming more accessible to non-expert authors. However, the inherent freedom of exploration in these virtual spaces presents a significant challenge for designers seeking to guide user attention toward points and objects of interest. This paper proposes the new technique WarpVision, which utilizes spatial curvature to subtly guide the user's attention in virtual reality. WarpVision distorts an area around the point of i

Towards personalized immersive virtual reality neurorehabilitation: a human-centered design.

BACKGROUND: Head-mounted displays can be used to offer personalized immersive virtual reality (IVR) training for patients who have suffered an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) by tailoring the complexity of visual and auditory stimuli to the patient's cognitive capabilities. However, it is still an open question how these virtual environments should be designed. METHODS: We used a human-centered design approach to help define the characteristics of suitable virtual training environments for ABI patients. We conducted (i) observations, (ii) interviews with eleven neurorehabilitation experts, and (i

Virtual reality gameplay classification illustrates the multidimensionality of visuospatial neglect.

Brain injuries can significantly impact mental processes and lead to hidden disabilities not easily detectable. Traditional methods for assessing these impacts are imprecise, leading to unreliable prevalence estimates and treatments with uncertain effectiveness. Immersive virtual reality has shown promise for assessment, but its use as a standalone tool is rare. Our research focused on developing and validating a standalone immersive virtual reality classification system for unilateral spatial neglect, a condition common following brain injury characterized by inattention to one side of space.

Modified Egocentric Viewpoint for Softer Seated Experience in Virtual Reality.

Users in a prolonged experience of virtual reality adopt a sitting position according to their task, as they do in the real world. However, inconsistencies in the haptic feedback from a chair they sit on in the real world and that which is expected in the virtual world decrease the feeling of presence. We aimed to change the perceived haptic features of a chair by shifting the position and angle of the users' viewpoints in the virtual reality environment. The targeted features in this study were seat softness and backrest flexibility. To enhance the seat softness, we shifted the virtual viewpo

A Novel Neurofeedback Attentional Enhancement Approach Based on Virtual Reality.

Attention enhancement can not only improve individual's study and work performance, but also help to improve such psychological problems as anxiety and depression. Traditional attention enhancement approaches have high requirements on the external environment, and thus have such limitations as long intervention periods, high costs, poor universality, and insignificant therapeutic effects. Virtual Reality (VR) can provide interactive and immersive environments, which can help to break through these limitations and effectively enhance users' attention. In this paper, we propose a novel neurofeed
