We evaluated the possible involvement of central optic pathways (COP) in leprosy patients with visual evoked potentials, an easy, sensitive and reliable noninvasive method for evaluation of COP. In 37 patients with lepromatous leprosy and in 37 age-matched controls, we measured reversal pattern visual evoked potentials (RP-VEP) and nerve conduction parameters. The mean latency value of positive peak P100 in leprosy patients was significantly delayed compared to that of controls (patients, 108.02+/-9.61 ms in left eye and 108.23+/-8.51 ms in right eye; controls, 96.22+/-4.20 ms in left eye and

The incidence of optic neuropathy after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is related to the total dose, fraction size, and treatment volume. Theoretically, fractionated SRS can decrease this risk. In this paper, we report our technique for fractionated SRS and assess its potential role in the management of tumors located adjacent to the anterior visual pathways. Since 1997, thirteen patients (median age: 50, range 21-76) with lesions in close proximity to the anterior visual pathways were treated on the CyberKnife image guided SRS system (Accuray, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA). The CyberKnife is a 6MV li

The flight of colours (FOC) test was compared with visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in 135 patients in a 2 year prospective study, to determine whether the FOC test is a sensitive and reliable alternative. We obtained an 80% overall agreement between the tests, confirming the levels of agreement reported by Rolak (87%) and Swart and Millac (92%). Abnormal VEPs, however, were more closely associated with cases of clinically definite multiple sclerosis (MS) while abnormal FOCs were more frequent in cases of non-demyelinating disease and cases without clinically evident optic nerve or other ocular

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) frequently results in persistent cognitive deficits with limited evidence-based rehabilitation options. Visual timing deficits, potentially linked to dorsal visual pathway dysfunction, represent a promising therapeutic target. This study examined whether a novel intervention targeting dorsal visual pathways (PATH) demonstrates superior efficacy compared to conventional cognitive therapies targeting ventral pathway deficits or working memory impairments.
METHODS: Twenty-four participants (aged 23-62 years) with mTBI were randomized

Parallel functional and anatomical visual pathways from the retina to primary visual cortex (V1) via the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) are common to many mammalian species, including mice, carnivores and primates. However, the much larger number of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) types that project to the LGN, as well as the more limited lamination of both the LGN and the thalamocortical-recipient layer 4 (L4) in mice, leaves considerable uncertainty about which visual features present in both retina and V1 might be inherited from parallel pathways versus extracted by V1 circuits in the mouse v

Blindness induces processes of neural plasticity, resulting in recruitment of the deafferentated visual areas for non-visual sensory functions. These processes are related to superior abilities of blind compared with sighted individuals for specific auditory and tactile tasks. Recently, an exceptional performance of the blind has been demonstrated for auditory motion perception, with a minimum audible movement angle that was half that of sighted controls (J. Lewald (2013) Neuropsychologia, 51, 181-186). The present study revealed an electrophysiological correlate of this finding by analysing t

Axonal markers injected into layers 5 and 6 of cortical areas 17, 18, or 19 labeled axons going to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), the lateral part of the lateralis posterior nucleus (LPl), and pulvinar (P). Area 19 sends fine axons (type 1, Guillery [1966] J Comp Neurol 128:21-50) to LGN, LPl, and P, and thicker, type 2 axons to LPl and P. Areas 17 and 18 send type 1 axons to LGN, and a few type 1, but mainly type 2 axons to LPl and P. Type 1 and 2 axons from a single small cortical locus distribute to distinct, generally nonoverlapping parts of LP and P; type 1 axons have a broader dis

Recognition of different kinds of visual stimuli was studied in a patient who acquired apperceptive visual agnosia after a bilateral occipitotemporal lesion which partially spared the primary visual cortex. Impairment in recognising static objects perceived visually sharply contrasts with the relatively well preserved ability to recognise objects from gestures illustrating their use, and to recognise actions shown in line drawings. It is suggested that the occipitoparieto-frontal pathway is involved in the recognition of actions, and in the recognition of objects when sensorimotor experience i

Moving backgrounds profoundly impact object perception, a crucial process for parsing complex visual scenes. This motion-induced modulation has traditionally been attributed to visual cortical circuits. However, recent evidence that brainstem activity is also influenced by background motion raises the intriguing question of whether subcortical circuits play a role in this perceptual phenomenon. Here, we demonstrate that inhibitory projections from mouse nucleus of the optic tract (NOT)-a brainstem structure mediating reflexive behaviors-impair superior colliculus (SC)-dependent visual detectio

Anatomical studies have revealed a prominent role for feedback projections in the primate visual cortex. Theoretical models suggest that these projections support important brain functions such as attention, prediction, and learning. However, these models make different predictions about the relationship between feedback connectivity and neuronal stimulus selectivity. We have therefore performed simultaneous recordings in different regions of the primate dorsal visual pathway. Specifically, we recorded neural activity from the medial superior temporal (MST) area, and one of its main feedback t

INTRODUCTION: Visual loss secondary to a vascular loop or atherosclerotic carotid has been a controversial topic for many years with contemporary data supporting its existence. The role of surgery in the management of this entity is not well defined. We performed a systematic review describing the different surgical techniques and outcomes.
METHOD: A search strategy was devised in accordance with the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. An electronic search was performed from the databases Pubmed, Google scholar, Scopus and Web of Science

The management of optic neuropathy is fundamental to neuro-ophthalmic practice. Following the invention of the ophthalmoscope, clinicians, for a century or more, relied upon fundus examination in the evaluation of optic neuropathy. However, the advent of optical coherence tomography, based on the principle of backscattering of light and interferometry, has revolutionized the analysis of optic nerve and retinal disorders. Optical coherence tomography has proven of particular value in the measurement, at the micron level, of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer and the ganglion cell layer

Recent theoretical work has argued that in addition to the classical ventral (what) and dorsal (where/how) visual streams, there is a third visual stream on the lateral surface of the brain specialized for processing social information. Like visual representations in the ventral and dorsal streams, representations in the lateral stream are thought to be hierarchically organized. However, no prior studies have comprehensively investigated the organization of naturalistic, social visual content in the lateral stream. To address this question, we curated a naturalistic stimulus set of 250 3-s vid

Decreased coherence in electroencephalogram (EEG) has been reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD) experimentally, which could be considered as a typical electrophysiological characteristic in AD. This work aimed to investigate the effect of AD on coherence in the dorsal visual pathway by the technique of neurocomputation. Firstly, according to the hierarchical organization of the cerebral cortex and the information flows of the dorsal visual pathway, a more physiologically plausible neural mass model including cortical areas v1, v2, and v5 was established in the dorsal visual pathway. The three

The visual pathway and its defects have been thoroughly studied in clinical correlation to temporal lobe lesions related to epilepsy and traumatic lesions. Nevertheless, its clinical correlation and other decision-making have not been addressed regarding neoplastic lesions. We present a case report of a 28-year-old man with a one-year history of generalized seizures and left superior homonymous quadrantanopia, with no other neurological disturbance on physical examination. According to diffusion tensor imaging tractography, MRI demonstrated a non-enhancing, right temporal lesion disrupting the

BACKGROUND: Anatomic variations in lymphatic drainage pathways of the upper arm may have an important role in the pathophysiology of lymphedema development. The Mascagni-Sappey (M-S) pathway, initially described in 1787 by Mascagni and then again in 1874 by Sappey, is a lymphatic drainage pathway of the upper arm that normally bypasses the axilla. Utilizing modern lymphatic imaging modalities, there is an opportunity to better visualize this pathway and its potential clinical implications.
METHODS: A retrospective review of preoperative indocyanine green (ICG) lymphangiograms of consecutive n
