The bovine embryo develops in contact with the oviductal fluid (OF) during the first 4-5 days of pregnancy. The aim of this study was to decipher the protein interactions occurring between the developing embryo and surrounding OF. In-vitro produced 4-6 cell and morula embryos were incubated or not (controls) in post-ovulatory OF (OF-treated embryos) and proteins were then analyzed and quantified by high resolution mass spectrometry (MS) in both embryo groups and in OF. A comparative analysis of MS data allowed the identification and quantification of 56 embryo-interacting proteins originated f

A newer, relatively quicker approach has been described for the treatment of patent VID. Its superior advantages over other approaches include better cosmetic results, is technically simpler and can be done using local anesthesia without an appreciable amount of blood loss.

Persistent Meckel's diverticulum is an uncommon embryonic developmental anomaly of the distal small intestine created by a portion of the vitelline duct adjacent to intestine that remains patent. This portion can form a diverticulum (Meckel's diverticulum) or a fibrous band, called vitelloumbilical band, and can be associated with colic after local impaction or strangulation of the small intestine around the remnant. This report describes two cases of Meckel's diverticulum with different morphological features in older horses. This congenital disorder should be considered as a reason for abdom

Meckel diverticulum is the most common abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract arising from an incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct during the intrauterine life. Although tumor development in Meckel diverticulum is not a common situation, it can occur due to the persistence of cellular islets with gastric, pancreatic or intestinal origin. The presence of a neuroendocrine tumor arising from Meckel diverticulum is even scarcer. We present the case of a 59-year-old patient in whom a Meckel diverticulum was found during surgery for inguinal hernia; the histopathological and immunohistoc

Udonella australis n. sp., an epibiont monogenean living on caligid copepods that infest a native fish, Eleginops maclovinus (Valenciennes), off Chile, South America is described. The species can be separated from other species by its difference in size, especially body size, and the distribution of cephalic glands, vitelline follicles and genital organs. Egg-size is intermediate in comparison with that of other species. The posterior attachment mechanism consists of few muscle fibres and clumped cement-producing glands. All previous descriptions of Udonella caligorum Johnston, 1835 from off C

A rare case of sirenomelia in a LBW, IUGR & second of a dizygotic twin having multiple congenital anomalies is being reported. Apart from the features of sirenomelia, the newborn had a single umbilical artery, radial hypoplasia, total anorectal & urogenital agenesis and undetermined sex. The single umbilical artery had a normal origin from the iliac artery. There was no Vitelline arterial steal phenomenon. Theories put forward regarding etiopathogenesis are discussed. We conclude that the anomalies in the present case are difficult to be explained with earlier proposed theories. This puts an e

Sirenomelus is an invariably lethal congenital anomaly characterized by complete or nearly complete fusion of the lower extremities that occurs in 1 of 60,000 births. In about 50% of cases this condition cannot be diagnosed prenatally because of the associated oligohydramnios that precludes a detailed examination of the fetus. We present a case of sirenomelus in which prenatal diagnosis was aided by color Doppler ultrasonography; visualization of the vitelline artery as a single, large intraabdominal vessel that did not branch in the fetal pelvis but rather coursed ventrally into the umbilical

This review summarises the findings of a series of studies in which the histological changes, induced in the reproductive system of Fasciola hepatica following treatment of the ovine host with the anthelmintic triclabendazole (TCBZ), were examined. A detailed description of the normal macroscopic arrangement and histological features of the testes, ovary, vitelline tissue, Mehlis' gland and uterus is provided to aid recognition of the drug-induced lesions, and to provide a basic model to inform similar toxicological studies on F. hepatica in the future. The production of spermatozoa and egg co

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital malformation occurring in the gastrointestinal tract and results from the persistence of the vitelline duct during embryology. MD is typically asymptomatic in adults with most of its symptoms manifesting in early childhood. Small bowel obstruction (SBO) due to MD in the elderly population is an entity that has not been widely described in the literature. We present a very rare case of SBO in an 80-year-old patient with no previous abdominal surgeries (virgin abdomen). The cause of obstruction was determined to be an adhesive band formed

Meckel's diverticulum, which is a remnant of the omphalomesenteric or vitelline duct, is the most common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal system. Urachal abnormalities, resulting from anomalous urogenital development, are not observed frequently and case reports are mainly represented in literature. The presence of these two congenital anomalies together is a very rare pathology. Complications arising from a Meckel's diverticulum or urachal remnant may clinically mimic acute appendicitis and other surgical pathologies. We report on a patient who underwent surgery for acute append

BACKGROUND: In vivo assessment of the embryonic mouse placenta and vasculature is challenging, and ultrasound remains the most commonly used imaging modality. However, even with contrast agents, conventional preclinical ultrasound lacks the temporal resolution required to resolve complex vascular networks. Ultrafast Doppler methods offer a contrast-agent-free approach for visualizing embryonic placental and vascular flow.
METHODS: A 15-MHz linear array was used to acquire 0.5 sec of ultrafast ultrasound data at mouse embryonic day 13.5 (E13.5) using a semi-invasive, non-destructive preparatio

Sheep infected with the triclabendazole-susceptible Cullompton isolate of Fasciola hepatica were treated with compound alpha at a dosage of 15 mg/kg at 12 weeks post-infection. Adult flukes were recovered from the bile ducts at 24h, 48 h and 72 h post-treatment (pt). They were processed for whole mount analysis, histology and transmission electron microscopy of the female reproductive system: specifically, the uterus, Mehlis' gland, ovary and vitellaria. As judged by the appearance of the uterus, normal egg production ceased within 24h of treatment; this phenomenon preceded significant changes

Eight indoor-reared cross-bred sheep with no prior exposure to Fasciola hepatica were infected by oral gavage with 200 metacercarial cysts of the triclabendazole (TCBZ)-susceptible Cullompton isolate of F. hepatica. Twelve weeks after infection, sheep were treated with 10mg/kg triclabendazole. Two sheep were euthanised per time period; at 48 h, 72 h and 96 h post-treatment (pt). Two untreated control sheep were euthanised at 96 h pt. Flukes were recovered from the liver and, if present, from the gall bladder of the sheep. They were processed for whole mount analysis, histology and transmission

Since the last decade the Yolk sac (YS) has been a topic of increasing interest due to the growing use of high-resolution sonography in early determination of pregnancy. Human YS shape and diameter are indicators of viability of pregnancy during the early embryonic period. Nevertheless, the major interest concerns the vital function it plays in early embryo growth and development. Two compartments are recognized in this organ: the yolk sac proper and the vitelline stalk. In this study we report the identification and partial characterization of a glomus-like body in the wall of the secondary Y

When adult cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché), were fed concentrations of < or = 0.08 ppm lufenuron in cattle blood, egg hatch did not differ significantly from the controls. However, as the concentration of lufenuron in blood increased from 0.125 to 1.0 ppm egg hatch decreased to 64 and 2%, respectively. Most of these eggs contained fully developed larvae. Microscopic examination of unhatched larvae, revealed that the cuticle epidermal cells, chorion, and vitelline membrane all were affected by lufenuron treatment. Larvae often produced 2 separate cuticles in response to treatment. The

A new species of monorchiid trematode, Leiomonorchis zhanjiangensis n. sp. (Trematoda: Monorchiidae), is described from the intestine of marine fish Secutor ruconius (Hamilton-Buchanan) (Leiognathidae) from Zhanjiang (21°2'N, 110°3'E), Guangdong Province, China. The new species is distinguished from all known species of the genus, mainly by the configuration of vitelline follicles and the shape of excretory bladder (saccular in the new species vs. tubular in the others). According to Madhavi's opinion, Caballerotrematoides secundus Ahmad, 1981 was transferred from Caballerotrematoides Madhavi,

A new species of stomach fluke, Dinurus ivanosi (sp. nov.), was recovered from the dolphin fish, Coryphaena hippurus, off the Kerala Coast, India. It is similar to other Dinurus species in the plicated prosoma, trilobed seminal vesicle and seven vitellaria, but differs from them in the length of the pharynx, unequal lobes of the seminal vesicle and unequal size of the testes. The most important diagnostic features of the new species are the general shape and proportions of the body, the position of the oral sucker, elongated pharynx, small distal lobe of the seminal vesicle, and larger anterio
